Disney
Anyone been lately. We are thinking of taking DD ( 6 yo) for the first time. Planning just seems so overwhelming. Whats the minimum #of days/nights are recommended? Preferred hotels. Any and all advice is welcome. We were thinking May/June, if that helps.

I've stayed at the Grand Floridian - Amazing and on the Monorail line.
I've also stayed at the Wilderness Lodge. Not my favorite but I think its more geared toward kids. The Yacht club also looks nice.
The thing with Disney is that, to me, its not a relaxing vacation as everything has to be so scheduled.
If you want something more relaxing and about the same cost as Disney, try Beaches in Jamaica.

I am so not a disney person but my mom and my husband's mom both wanted to go with the kids for their 70th birthdays so we had to go two years in a row when my kids were little. I also found the whole thing so overwhelming but once we got there it wasn't so bad. However, I heard they changed the whole fast pass system which is disappointing because I actually think that made it so much easier. The new system sounds very complicated.
As far as hotels, we stayed off property. Once at a marriott time share, and the other time at The Grove. We loved the Grove. It was brand new then. Has it's own waterpark if you want to just do a couple of hotel days it's great and it is SOOOOO much cheaper than staying at a Disney property. It was a quick ride to disney and we paid up to park in VIP. There are definitely perks to staying at a Disney property but it's a lot more expensive.
If you are going to stay on property I would use the travel agent who posted above. They can help you navigate all the dining and park reservations etc.

We just got back from Disney yesterday. We were there with my daughter's HS Cheer team for Nationals. We do go to Disney at least once a year and have been like 30 times. It can be overwhelming to plan, that's for sure! We never use an agent, because I like to be in complete control of my reservations. When you book with an agent, you cannot modify anything to your reservation on your own. Your travel agent has to do it for you. And planning is half the fun!
Where to stay depends on your budget. Disney hotels are expensive these days. We LOVE the Yacht and Beach Club. The pool is amazing, best on property. You can walk to Epcot or take the boat, and take the boat to Hollywood Studios. If you are on a budget, the Value resorts are great. The theming is adorable for kids and the rooms are all redone. We like All Star Movies with little kids. The larger than life Disney icon statues and theming are adorable. Pop Century is great also. And it's on the Skyliner. You can walk over the bridge to Art of Animation and check out their resort. Cute theming (don't like the rooms there).

For your first trip I would get NON park hopping tickets. Do one park per day. We actually did all 4 in one day on Thursday! But, we've been there a million times and don't need to see it all.
The Sunshine Flyer is cute to take from the airport to the resort. It's like $16 per person. We just Uber, but I would take the bus for a first trip with little kids. Makes it more "magical".
For this trip, our team stayed where all the cheerleaders stay (Value resort), my son and I stayed at the Dolphin, which is a Marriott, so it was free with points. It's ON Disney property and right next to the Yacht and Beach Club in the Boardwalk area, and comes with all the perks of staying at a Disney hotel, minus charging back to your room. It was free, so it was a no brainer for me.
Definitely get the park 45 minutes before opening to maximize your day and ride time, and definitely purchase the Genie Plus option, so you can ride more with less waiting. We utilized this along with my son's Disability accommodations, and were able to do a lot. We also paid to ride the new Guardian's of the Galaxy ride, which I highly recommend if you can't get into the virtual queue!
I always book a room only reservation on the Disney site, NOT a package. You pay one night up front, and the rest due at check in. You can cancel or modify up to 5 days before. Once you add tickets to that reservation at the same time, it turns into a package, and has more strict policies. I purchase our tickets in a separate transaction.

I agree. I've only been to Disney about 3 times in the last 30 years and have only stayed off property. We rented a car and drove there. I didn't find it problematic.

I would use a travel agent for your first time. The planning can be very overwhelming. A travel agent does not charge you. You are in control of everything through them. They also know all of the discounts and specials and can apply them to your reservation.
Staying ON property gives you more perks than staying off property like early entry into the parks and late nights. You are also the first to book lightning lanes before non-property guests.

We went on an off time so it wasn't that crowded. I think it was the jewish holidays in Oct one year. I am sure it's horrible during peak times.

Especially for your first time, use a Disney travel agent. And yes, there’s a difference between the knowledge a regular travel agent brings vs a Disney one. We’ve had a fantastic experience with the agent we use. She does literally everything for us. Feel free to FM me if you want her contact info. I rave about no one, but she is amazing.

It really depends on your budget. We've gone several times since our kids were little. We are in the parks all day, so a deluxe hotel is not worth the money to us, since we are basically there to shower and sleep. We like Pop Century because it's considered a value hotel and it is on the skyliner route (I hate the buses- so the skyliner is great because at least you can get to both Hollywood Studios and Epcot on this). We used a friend of mine to help book our trips, she is a travel agent.

I agree. I've only been to Disney about 3 times in the last 30 years and have only stayed off property. We rented a car and drove there. I didn't find it problematic.
We usually stay off property as well.
The first couple of times it was great but then it got more difficult as those staying on site had access to book fast passes earlier on. There are so many great options offsite though I wouldnt rule them out.

What other activities should we look into that may be good for a 6 year old?

We have stayed at the Wilderness Lodge a few times. Love it there! The location can't be beat. It's serene, but a boat ride away from the Magic Kingdom. You can also take the boat over to Fort Wilderness Campground which has the Chip and Dale S'mores Campfire singalong, Pony Rides, and several other activities. You have to eat at the Whispering Canyon Cafe for lunch or dinner..and ask for Ketchup (your child will get a kick out of that)
Is your child a boy or girl? The Pirate Cruises from various resorts are fun for all genders, Bibbidi Boutique is cute for girls, they used to have the Wonderland Tea Party at the Grand Floridian, but I don't think that came back after Covid.
And I would do one fall day in each park, that sounds good. Magic Kingdom is usually open latest. You can head back to hotel for a pool break and go back in the evening. If you are going when it's HOT then that's always a good idea. Also Wilderness is a Deluxe resort, which means you will get extended hours in various parks on certain days in the evening. There is a schedule for that. Pop is a value so you don't get that perk.

We were there recently and had an amazing time. Disney is one of those places that you can really tailor your vacation to your particular needs/wants. We stayed at the Poly - it was gorgeous, monorail and boat were super easy to access everything. The hotel is beautiful as are the grounds. We did club level for the first time and it was worth every penny! We also used a travel agent for the first time and she was phenomenal! She got us reservations at every single restaurant despite us booking only a few weeks before. The genie plus/lightening lane is annoying with the timing and money but once you get the hang of it , if used correctly it really makes the trip so much better. Lmk if any questions!

I definitely think using a travel agent is helpful and cost effective. In fact, when we were first going, we originally booked one of the moderate resorts but then the TA found the Polynesian to be $180 more for the whole week so we went there instead. I would have never found that on my own. I'm not one to check websites everyday.
We have stayed at The Polynesian (loved it) and The Grand Floridian. I think the GF is very stuffy and I didn't love it. Next time I want to try Beach Club.
To me, convenience is everything. I think staying at a Disney resort is your best bet.
I can't wait to go back to Disney. I am hoping for next year with my boys.

Wilderness Lodge is amazing. It's so beautiful and serene. Geyser Point has some delicious food. Both pools are lovely and the hot tubs are huge and there's a slide!
Pop is completely on the other end of the spectrum. It's my favorite value and having access to the Skyliner is great. But the grounds, while well kept and having fun giant statues, are not relaxing. There's usually a ton of people around and always a lot of activity. Also, no hot tub and no pool slide.
One full day per park is fine, but you might want two for MK. There's a lot to do there, especially with a 6 year old and you may find it really difficult to fit it all in. Personally I'd do a late afternoon/evening at MK on one of your pool days. If you get Genie+ you can stack them all day while at the pool to make the evening easier and more efficient.

For us, it wouldn't be worth it because we are only in the resort to shower and sleep, but since you are going to spend more time there it may be worth it since it probably has a nicer pool. We never do park hoppers. I would probably do 2 days at MK if you can just because of the number of rides there. On the pool day/s you can also check out Disney Springs at night.

Of all 4 I probably would skip AK. But I consider that a 1/2 day park....some people love AK.

Do we need more? We were factoring in 2 pool days at the hotel within the week of our stay.
What other activities should we look into that may be good for a 6 year old?
For us, it wouldn't be worth it because we are only in the resort to shower and sleep, but since you are going to spend more time there it may be worth it since it probably has a nicer pool. We never do park hoppers. I would probably do 2 days at MK if you can just because of the number of rides there. On the pool day/s you can also check out Disney Springs at night.
Thanks. We have decided to go for Pop Century. We were throwing around the idea of maybe skipping out on Epcot and doing MK two days. Dh thinks there may not be enough for a 6 year old at Epcot?
Don't skip Epcot! There is so much to do there!
Totally agree! Personally I wouldn’t go on a Disney vacation, stay at a Disney hotel and spend two full days at a pool! Epcot vs a pool day?? Not even a comparison!

I would NOT stay off site, just incredibly inconvenient to get to the Magic Kingdom since that transportation drops you off at the Transportation and Ticket Center, not the Magic Kingdom gates.
Although I was dreading it, I have to say staying off property really was not bad. We paid the extra $20 for VIP parking so it brought us up very close. Then I think we took a short tram to the entrance? And when I stayed on property some of the bus rides took forever to get from one park to another....
I’m not a big Disney person either and I also found it complicated the very first time. We’ve also stayed off site and didn’t find it inconvenient, we did pay the $20 for vip parking so maybe that helped?
I’d also suggest go when kids are in school so the parks are not too crowded, it makes a huge difference.
