Any small business owners here?

DH and I have a small business and so far it’s only been the two of us. We are bringing on staff now and have questions about a few things-anyone on here willing to give some feedback on:

1. Payroll/timecard system used
2. Insurances needed. Do you have a broker you like?

Our employees would be 1099 if that matters.

Thank you!!

I owned a small business and now I work for one. If you are paying employees on a 1099 you probably don't need a payroll service. You can just cut them a check and then issue them a 1099 at the end of the year. If you do want to use a payroll service we used ADP. Not sure I would recommend them though.

I can't remember what I did as far as insurance.

Ok, thank you. How does this work from a timekeeping perspective? We need to track hours and then ideally the employee would certify his timecard and a check would be directly deposited. Do you have any idea how that could work?

Technically if they are outstide contractors they should be billing you for their hours. I'd ask them to submit a timesheet and you check it. As far as direct deposit, I would just send them a check through your online banking and they can deposit it on their own.

Re: Any small business owners here?

You can use Square to pay contractors via 1099, I would definitely look at this if I were you. Very easy and Square will issue the 1099s for them automatically at the end of the year. You can also set up Square so it pays them electronically via direct debit (the contractors would give square their bank information directly, you don't need it).

Works great. Very cheap too, like a few bucks per contractor per month. I think they even have a system where they can enter in their time as timesheets and you approve, but i never tried that. I just put in the pay (hours + hourly wage) every week.
