I usually give $25 per child. I figure they are paying at least that per kid at a party place.
Someone also asked about weddings- I got married 12 years ago and most people gave $100 per person then. My standard is $300 per couple now when we go to weddings. Idk if that is on the cheap side or not.
Oh wow, I got $100 almost 30 years ago. The last wedding close to yours was 9 years and I think we gave $300 then. We probably should push it up a little bit but we always budget that much.
Yeah family def gave more but I noticed friends and coworkers typically gave us $200 per couple. I don't know what the "standard" is but we usually do $300, I don't even know what a standard plate at a place costs these days.
I got married 14 years ago and $200-$250 per couple was the middle of the road gift from friends, closer friends and family were up to $500 a couple.
To respond to OP- I would spend $20-$30 on a classmate's gift at that age. For a gift card, I think $25 or $30 gift card is good!. As a parent I would prefer that more than more toys although at 6 they dont really get the concept of gift cards/cash so the kid probably doesnt prefer it!. As they get older and for closer friends we do between $50 and $75
Wow I need to be your kids friend lololol. The most I have ever gotten is $50 from a friend, or even family (minus m y mom who gives all of us $100 for our bdays).
I feel so poor when I come to this board 
lol As LuLu said as they get older its more personal /close friends rather than classmates so the gifts become "bigger". $50 is about the norm in my hood for older elementary-- so it goes both ways-- you are giving bigger gifts bc you are receiving them! It does get a bit excessive, I agree
DD has a group of close friends and one mom is ultra generous in general- like wants to take my daughter on vacation generous. Like buys her dinner all the time, like treats her to clothes at the mall. like gives her expensive hand me downs, etc. They consider my daughter a second daughter. For my DD's birthday she goes above and beyond and I feel the need to reciprocate not just because of the gift she gives my daughter but because of what she does for her the whole year through.
It doesn't bother me because DH and I always feel bad about how generous she is. She is just one of those people who would give you the shirt off her back- I don't think she does it to show off or anything, she's a very genuine person.
And now that we don' have big parties with 25 kids and aren't invited to 25 parties a school year, we do tend to be a bit more generous with her close friends. But I wouldn't judge anyone who reciprocated less. It's whatever you can afford and feel comfortable with. It shouldn't be about what everyone else gives.

Wow, everyone is really generous on this board. For elementary birthdays we always did $25. I can't imagine spending $50 on someone that was not like a best friend or something.
My daughter's sweet 16 in in a few weeks and I wasn't thinking she would get more than 25-50 per person and that I thought was generous. I should have invited everyone on here. She would have been rich lol.

At 6 we were still doing gifts, but maybe things have changed. But the toys we were gifting were around 20, so if we did a GC, it was around what a toy would cost. Later in MS, some kids starting giving $50 GC, while some did $20 GC, but we didn't care. At the end, we only wanted for DS to have fun. Funny thing, now in HS boys don't do anything for their birthdays; so we don't have to worry at all.

Yes, Sweet 16's are big here. Haven't been to one in many years and honestly don't remember what I gave as they were twins so it was double the amount.

I think many kids are not having huge parties as much. Many go on vacations like you mentioned or ask for big gift and just have a couple of friends over. Of course my child wanted the big party. 50 kids and 25 adults so it should be interesting lol.

I had done $25 gift cards (target/amazon etc) and recently increased to $30.
We've recently done hibachi dinners for their parties (teens now) and some of their friends have given up to $50.

I have a friend who does parties for a living and she is booked solid. She even has one for next summer already.

In my family you pretty much get the same year after year no matter what age you are. What I was saying earlier that people tend to give more to friends as the kids get older is because the parties are smaller and less frequent. When a kid is 6 you get invited to 20 parties throughout the year. When they are 12 you get invited to about 6/8.

You don’t have kids right so I would think you don’t go to many kids parties to judge how they are?
Okay now it's all starting to make sense.....Yeah if you don't have kids I guess maybe you wouldn't know how much a toy costs or what would be an appropriate gift for an elementary aged kid.

They said $25 per girl so they gave $75 total. Honestly I thought that was very little. So we gave a $150 total, $50 for each girl. I was kind of surprised because Long Island seems to be the land of excess, where people routinely get $500 for a wedding. So I was just surprised by the $25 sweet 16 thing.

I think that since it was triplets, the gift was probably lower per girl. I know it's weird, but if you're going to three separate parties, you get to have 3 separate nights of fun, so your gift is kind of a "thank you" for the "fun". Since it was only one party, it's only one night of fun, so the gift is based on that, not on the number of birthday girls. That's my take on why it was on the low end. I bet for one birthday girl, they're giving in the $50-$75 range. (But I could be wrong.)

$25 for a sweet 16 seems low. The standard gift when I was 16 was $50 and that was 21 years ago.
I’m not on the sweet 16 and bar/bat mitzvah circuit yet, but I would give at least $100 for these occasions.

I bet for one birthday girl, they're giving in the $50-$75 range. (But I could be wrong.)
This makes sense. I really didn't think of this. 3 gifts for one party is also more of a burden so I can see cutting down the individual gift in a case of multiples

I’m not on the sweet 16 and bar/bat mitzvah circuit yet, but I would give at least $100 for these occasions.

Yes. I distinctly remember getting $50 from most kids because my birthday is in January so I was one of the first to turn 16 and my parents were annoyed everyone gave so much because then we had to reciprocate. 
For when DD starts going to sweet 16s, it’ll depend on what’s standard then. It’s 10 years away so $100 doesn’t seem that out of the realm of possibility.

Do a lot of the girls even have sweet 16s though? I never hear of them around here. What I hear more of is a trip with a few moms and a few girls or a dinner out in the city or at a fancy restaurant with just close friends.
