Funny as the "going rate" for gifts at our wedding was $100. Now people are giving that for elementary kids parties?

I kind of feel like you double it every 10 years so that would put us at about $40 which I think is the appropriate amount in most situations. Especially when the kids are on the younger side.

Toys are NOT cheap...... my DD finally asked for something specific, which she never does and it's $65 bucks.

I can answer that, because people want to impress each other how much they spend on things. They think if they spend more they can prove they are doing better in life. These kids are going to go out in the world expecting more than what they will get.
Off the subject, I have been on pages on social media where people are amazed how much people spend on gifts, especially weddings. Out of the NE region, people give a LOT less. These kids will be shocked if they move elsewhere later on in life.

For that amount of money, it is for parents or grandparents to buy, not classmates, IMO.

For that amount of money, it is for parents or grandparents to buy, not classmates, IMO.
Which is exactly why I told my mom to buy it for her. My daughter would be happy with $10. Some of these other kids in our town prob not.

But $10 in 1985 is very different than $10 now because of inflation. I think that giving a kid $40 today is the same amount of spending power that $10 was in 1985. I think it's a matter of keeping the standard the same, not setting the bar any higher.
I don't understand expecting $1000 when your 16 if you get $40 when you are 6. Frankly a 6 year old doesn't really understand the concept of money yet so it's not really setting any expectation. In my family you pretty much get the same year after year no matter what age you are. What I was saying earlier that people tend to give more to friends as the kids get older is because the parties are smaller and less frequent. When a kid is 6 you get invited to 20 parties throughout the year. When they are 12 you get invited to about 6/8.

there is no inflation for 6 year olds. $5.00 should be adequate imo at that age. To 6 yr $5.00 is like a million. It's parents who are setting this false nonsense of what is appropriate.An every parent who follow so they don't look cheap.
I get it's not comfortable "looking Cheap" but who cares. Life is too short to worry. The lessons being taught to kids is off the rails imo.

Right if you gave $10 in 1985 it was like giving $40 today.
I watch the old price is right episodes on Pluto TV and in 1985 a decent mid range car was $7000 and a "luxury" car like a Cadillac was $25K
So if you calculate it out it works out to around the same in today's terms.
People didn't make the same money they make today in the 80s either. So giving $10 in that time probably felt the same on your finances as giving $40 today

I think that there are definitely people that are giving just to make an impression. But I also think that there are certain cultures in which giving a large amount is just the norm. I find this in particular with my Italian and Jewish friends. They are just accustomed to giving more and are overly generous. My husband is like this. He loves giving people things and he doesn't care how much he spends on it, even to our detriment.
As far as the kids go, I think that the expectations depend on how they are raised. If you teach your child to appreciate everything that they have in life, big and small, and that the most important parts of life are not material, I think they will be just fine. If you teach them that the more stuff you have, the happier you will be, then you are setting them up for a lifetime of disappointment.

Okay, there is inflation, whether you want to believe it or not. In 1885 Laura Ingalls was overjoyed when she got a shiny penny from Pa. Times change. I get what you are saying but you wouldn't hand a kid $2 at a birthday party and think it's a good gift.
But I agree with you, you should give what you think is an appropriate gift and not worry about what anyone else is thinking. My parents always stuck with the $10 gift even though I so badly wanted to be the kid whose parents gave the $20. And realistically my child has never received a gift and not appreciated it, not matter how big or small and I have never gotten a gift and thought someone spent too little...

I agree with this. A party at a bouncy place is probably $25 to $35 per person. Everything is so much more expensvie. And, you really don't get much for your money anymore. So I think $30 ish for a gift is fine, especially for the younger kids. My daughter is 14 and we have been giving $50 gift cards to Amazon. But, like someone else said, I think she was invited to maybe 5 birthdays this year (and they were all her closest friends).

I know it's weird, but now I feel like I'm the "older relative" and they're just starting out, so I want to be more generous. We gave in the range of $350-$500 per couple, based on our relationship to the bride/groom and their parents.

For a six-year-old, I would give $20. Your gift doesn't have to cover that expensive toy, let her add all her birthday money together and buy it if thats what she wants.
But I am more about giving what you can afford, even for a wedding. Sharing events with others is more about the company than the gift. At least for me.

lol As LuLu said as they get older its more personal /close friends rather than classmates so the gifts become "bigger". $50 is about the norm in my hood for older elementary-- so it goes both ways-- you are giving bigger gifts bc you are receiving them! It does get a bit excessive, I agree

lol As LuLu said as they get older its more personal /close friends rather than classmates so the gifts become "bigger". $50 is about the norm in my hood for older elementary-- so it goes both ways-- you are giving bigger gifts bc you are receiving them! It does get a bit excessive, I agree
My kids are "adults" so I have BTDT and NEVER gave that much, ever to a close friend. I don't think they ever got that much either from a friend. Maybe we ALL are poor
