Foster care
Hi
Does anyone know how to go about locating a child who was placed in foster care in another state? I am in occassional contact with one of the child's parents, who isn't to keen on giving up any details other than the fact the child was taken away. This is a blood relative. The parents also live in a different state from where the child was placed.
I am willing to blindly make calls but I also don't want to rock the boat and come off as crazy.

Since it's a minor, you may have trouble getting any information, but I would start with the family service run through the county were the bioparents are located. You may be able to find out the caseworker especially if you are interested in taking custody.

If you are looking to help (AKA take the child in) the social worker will speak with you. I would start with the child services in that state/county. IF you are just looking for info, they likely won't give you any.

That's the thing, I am not fully aware of the circumstances except for what was told to me by the birth parent. Also, the birth parent doesn't reside in the state that the child entered Foster care. Is offering to take the child in the only way they will speak to me? I don't want to take a child from a loving home but at the same time I don't want to leave the child in foster care to grow up unwanted. Both parents are a mess and have had another child since this one has entered into foster care.

I only have experience in NYS, when my cousin's child was placed in foster care, she reached out to me to possibly take over as foster care. I had the case worker's #, so I called and got information about the process to take the child in, the type of place she was in and all that. So, when I called it wasn't with the intention "I WILL take this child", it was more, "tell me the circumstances so I can see if this is the righ decision for me". She did talk to me based on that. I am not sure how it works in other states and if it depends on the relationship to the child, etc. Good luck!!
