Where would you prefer to live?

Choice 1: A small town where you work and the commute is 10 mins, but there isn’t too much going on. It’s not bad and has all the supermarkets and shops I need. A few cafes, too. My car is not the best and I won’t be able to buy a new one until next year. This small town also has public transport that I can use if my car breaks down. Can get a lot more space for your rent money. The buildings can be very communist looking with those block houses, but you can also find “normal” looking homes.

Choice 2: A major city where there is a lot happening. Most colleagues live there and are wondering why I am even considering living in the small town. The commute is like 20-30 mins by car or public transport. Public transport is not an easy option in case my car breaks down, making the commute twice as long in the mornings. I would also spend more in gas and the space for rent would be smaller. The buildings are beautiful and nothing is too “communist” looking, but some parts are.

Edit: I only would be working from 7 AM-12.30 PM (some days will be longer) at about 42 weeks per year.

Edit: If my car breaks down in Choice 2 it means that the commute is twice as long, but it means waking up at 3.30 in the morning vs. 5.30 if my car is working. It really is that difficult in the morning because the train to the bus is once an hour and the bus is once an hour and the times don’t match up well. So it makes a big difference. Can’t afford to buy a car until next summer at the earliest.

Where would you prefer to live?

choice 1- shorter commute, better public transport

if your friends are only 20-30 min away, seems like you can easily go there whenever you want to hangout and get together

Re: Where would you prefer to live?

Just wanted to define the morning commute:

If my car breaks down in Choice 2 it means that the commute is twice as long, but it means waking up at 3.30 in the morning vs. 5.30 if my car is working. It really is that difficult in the morning because the train to the bus is once an hour and the bus is once an hour and the times don’t match up well. So it makes a big difference. From your description, it seems like you want # 1 more. Go with your gut and get that one. If, after a while, you feel lonley in the small town, then you can move to the bigger one.

Yes - I’d pick choice 2 but it sounds like you want choice 1.

Re: Where would you prefer to live?

Choice 2, even with the updated info you gave.

The fact that most of your colleagues are surprised you are even considering #1 is a red flag IMO. They presumably know the area and situation very well.

And if your car were to break down, couldn't you catch a ride with a coworker?

You sound like you want choice 1 so you should do what you think is best. Personally I would pick choice 2.

It’s the 3.30 AM wake up that is freaking me out. Chat Icon

I won’t be able to get a ride from coworkers for months at a time. I just feel like my car is going to blow up for some reason. It has passed all inspections and has low mileage, but it’s 18 years old. However, it surprised me when I did the drive here twice at about 100 mph.

I don’t know. That’s the main thing. Choice 2 is nice, but I wasn’t happy with all the apartments I looked at and they had crappy insulation. I think I found one in choice 1 that is just perfect. It’s by a chocolate factory, though, and sometimes you can smell the chocolate.

I’d rather have trouble finding transportation to hang w friends then to get to work daily if my car breaks down.

Choice 1 and maybe eventually move to choice 2 when you get a better car.

Choice 1 and save some money for a better car. But also - if the bigger city is that close, you can take advantage of what it has to offer when you have the time (instead of having to deal with it daily).

In my 20s and 30s I would choose choice 2. Now in my 50s, been there and done that and dont like most people anymore so choice 1 sounds dreamy.

Yeah, I keep flip flopping. The temporary housing sucks, but when I leave base, I like the small town. I’m still in training and it is a lot to take in. The job is the easy part, but it’s learning all the military things.

I finished work today and just wished I had a short drive back to an apartment where I could relax and do my own thing in a quiet area. The base is pretty full on and I don’t like living on base. But close by isn’t bad. I definitely don’t want to go back to a busy city after work. But I’m just not sure. I’ll talk to more colleagues tomorrow.

Exactly! That’s what I think. I seriously had a great time in my 20 and 30s. I still have a good time, but I like the option nearby and not too close.

Re: Where would you prefer to live?

Will it be easy to make friends while living in the smaller town? As a single person it would be important to me to live in an area that it would be easy to meet people and socialize. I don't mean go out and party every night but just so I have something to do here and there that includes others. I am a very social person so living in a small town with little opportunity to meet people would be daunting.

Ditto. After dealing with people at work all day, a quick commute to a quiet home sounds like a dream come true. Chat Icon

It’s pretty nice. I have my relationships in my life as I want to have them. I am not a social person at all. I get enough everyday social interaction at work.
