Re: PSA: How often do you get your hearing checked?

I never did up until 2 years ago when I started having really bad tinnitus...

Turns out I had hearing loss at 39...

The tinnitus has subsided a bit...its always there but not to the point where I can't focus. Unless I have just gotten used to it at this point...

I have to go for hearing tests now every year to make sure it doesn't aggressively decline since I am considered young for hearing loss.

Not since i was child. I don't think they do hearing checks in the US unless necessary

This is so odd, because they check my hearing every year during my physical. Are people not getting regular physicals or are my doctors/insurance extra? My DH hearing isn’t the best and they monitor it every year.

I don't get one as part of my physical.

But my last one was about 7-8 years ago.

They always give us a vision and hearing test at the office we go to.

Never got one, my dh is older and never got on either and my mom never got one till recently when she asked for one but she's in her 80's. Some doctors do extra stuff to charge more to insurance. My mom has even caught them charging hers for extra unnecessary stuff.

I had to fight with my insurance company for 2 years over a hearing test the ped gave my daughter.
Insurance was refusing to pay it, I said well it was part of her annual well visit and how was I to know that?
It ended up going to collections and it was a nightmare.
I now do not allow a hearing test at her well visits because it was not worth the 2 years of hell trying to get it paid.
The minute they mention it I say Oh my god please do not test her hearing!

Our ped makes us sign something if we do have the hearing test saying it may be subject to a separate copay because of this.

I got charged a copay at a well visit once because I filled out the forms they sent me...

I guess my DH has some good insurance because we never had to pay for my DS's hearing test. I would probably have them do it and eat the extra cost, atleast run the test every two years. I rather be safe than sorry.

I never had to pay out of pocket for our adult test either.

The thing is they were supposed to cover it but due to a coding error it became MY issue. For 2 years. Because both the doctor office and the insurance were useless in resolving it.
Utterly useless.
At this point I'm so traumatized by it that I am like don't touch her ears. Thanks.
I figure if she can hear me talking about her to my DH from across the house and come rushing in to defend herself, her hearing is just fine. Chat Icon

Doesn’t the doctor tell you if it costs extra? Don’t they know this? Whenever something costs extra, I am told it will cost XX and I sign something and pay at the doctor’s office. They know the different insurance companies here.

It is supposed to be covered during a routine child's physical.
The doctor's office coded it wrong and the insurance denied it. Then it became MY responsibility to go back and forth to get it coded right and it never was and it went on and on for 2 years.
It was literally $100 I could have just paid it but I wasn't going to pay for something that was supposed to be covered.
I was so annoyed by the whole thing and scared of it happening again that I said forget it. It's not like it's a cancer screen or something super important that I'm missing out on. Like I said- the kid hears like a dog
