Yeah, nope, I'll take the media...warts and all - every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I am not a fan of Facebook or Twitter and don't get me started on the opinion shows that call themselves news.

However, after reading about what Putin is doing with the Russian media (and seeing how the news works in China) - I'll take our freedom of the press, hype or no hype and try to weed out the nonsense.

(I certainly don't feel "the media is the enemy of the people".)

I agree. It’s up to the viewer/reader/listener to look up more sources and studies to weed out stuff. Someone on here was just saying “what about that pipeline” and then couldn’t say more because they were getting ready and flipping between channels or something like that.

I read something the other day about how Putin stages his media. It was really interesting. There was a lot on how there are controls, phones, and buttons in the background. It was really interesting. Here’s the link: https://www.smh.com.au/world/europe/what-these-three-pictures-tell-us-about-putin-and-power-20220223-p59yu3.html

Sure the media is staged a bit in the US, but not like that, IMO.

That was me about the pipeline and yes I was getting ready and listening but they have had more on it and it is something that might have helped the U.S.
The issue is more of using more of our resources.

Putin has changed and ALL the media, no matter what channel you watch has said that.

I still don't understand how in 2022 people act surprised by this.

There are a lot of people on these boards who will deny the impact that the media has on people and the outright corruption present in the media. Many, many posters.

I have not seen “many, many” posters deny the power of the media. I don’t think anyone has or could. Of course it’s powerful.

What I think people need to realize, though, is that there are tools available to people to figure out what is accurate and what is not, or at least get somewhat of an idea of how much bias plays into the reporting. And yes, this is true on both sides.

And I believe that “many, many“posters on here lack those tools.

Do you think the average person researches beyond what they hear or see, honestly? So many don't even watch TV or follow the news so whatever they hear they take as truth and don't know how or don't want to look beyond. Older people trust what the news says as they used to be there to just report the news and not opinions.

She’s blaming the wrong people and misplacing responsibility on the spectators. While I do agree, we should be able to research for what we want, it is not our job, we’re not getting payed for it. It is the responsibility of the media to be unbiased, dig for the truth, and report it to the public. Today's journalism is not what it once was.

Yes, I sure do. I agree with Windy - that people stick to what they believe and follow what they want to hear.

It's not that hard to find unbiased news.....the Associated Press, Reuters, NPR, the BBC, PBS to some extent. There are a slew of choices. If someone wants to....they can turn off social media and cable news.

Totally agree. Why should we be doing someone else's job? They don't stop their day to do my job to make sure I am telling the truth.

It’s also very *privileged* of you to automatically assume everyone possesses the ability to think critically AND has the access and time to research an unlimited amount of information.

Exactly. We should be able to rely on the media, and we can not. But, many people still think that we can and therein lies the problem.

Do you think people who don't even turn on the TV or the radio or have news sites on their social media are going to go find these sources on their own? Many of these people just listen to what others say and run with that.

I'm a little confused. Sure some people are provincial and don't critically think....is this what we are blaming the media for?

The comments about not being paid to research and figure out what is legitimate news seems silly to me. It's not my job? Chat Icon

Pretty simple to find real news if you want to. I think it's even pretty simple to find legit news with political leanings. Personally, I think The New York Times leans left and The Wall Street Journal leans right (especially if you are looking at opinion pieces or people's comments). But I think both papers have integrity and fact checkers and standards.

I don't think that the media is ALWAYS wrong but I do think much of it is hyped up to scare people and it is A LOT different than what it was in the 70's and 80's when we were kids.

I also know many people don't read the newspaper or watch the news on TV. I know many who say they don't want to see bad news. I get that but you still want to know what is going on around you.

News is not state owned, thankfully. They are corporations. This isn’t exactly a censorship issue.

You just have to read through the bias and critically think. What other choice is there?

I’m not really sure how you can eliminate bias in the media? Do you expect the government to regulate it or something? That sounds far worse, IMO. Any ideas? No snark; I am genuinely curious.

I do agree that the media can do better, but when I am talking about "tools" one of them is that list that circulates that shows the bias of different media outlets.  It's a graphic that I would attach here if I could, but I am never able to do that.
My point is, it's as simple as changing the channel sometimes.  No one is forcing anyone to watch Tucker.  Find an unbiased source.  It's not that hard.
And you cannot compare our media environment to that of Russia.  Not even close.  Russia is a dictatorship with state run media and restriction of entire websites.  Journalists have been killed and fear for their lives.  To try to create some equivalence is absurd.

There is no such thing as an unbiased source. Every human has bias-so to suggest just change a channel is really simplistic. You obviously subscribe to news outlets that support your bias as others do the same.

Exactly and many have ideas of what news source they think is not telling the correct news for what THEY believe. If I watch Fox, I know they are mainly right wing. Cnn is left as well as other stations. The only middle unbiased I have seen is this war as I have been watching all different channels and they have all been saying the same thing. It is hard to get news stations that do that anymore.

This chart is always interesting to me. Some of them that I think lean one way are either in the middle or on the other side. Shows how much I know. I watch ABC every day and I think they are very left leaning especially with George Stephanopoulos running the place so it's interesting to me that it's considered neutral. I just stick to TMZ and the Post for my news these days. LOL

ABC is definitely liberal news, no doubt about that. Wonder who made that chart up Chat Icon

This should probably be a spin off, but I usually stick to Reuters, NYT, Deutsche Welle, der Spiegel, BR (these three are local to me), the Guardian and BBC.

I don’t really watch TV news. I’ll just stream it through my computer. The only time I will turn on the TV is for CNN when there is a plane crash (they have that plane expert with the annoying voice, Richard Quest) and some sort of natural disaster.

Ad Fontes Media. Their methods are transparent. You can google and research it.

Yeah, I guess it is. My family had strange viewing habits growing up. Plane crash happens, we watched the news. Hurricane happening? The weather channel it was.

I am a news person so I get that. I have been watching every channel about Ukraine and with weather, I have the weather channel on until I annoy my family enough and they ask if they can change it Chat Icon Chat Icon

They decided Covid is over.

And within days there is zero coverage of Covid and everyone from the president to news anchors are maskless, no social distancing, no talk of boosters/vaccines. It’s literally gone.
