I read some of the posts not all. I thought the true idea of Christmas was not about gifts. Isn't it about the birth of Christ. Shortage or not, it's a good lesson there is more to this holiday and life than hundreds or thousands of dollars spent on toys. Less is actually more.

Exactly but are you new to all of this? People get worse every year with more decorations and gifts. It’s all a competition unfortunately.

I'm not new to this, I think its absurd every year when people talk about spending hundreds or thousands of dollar on each child, not just on this holiday but easter etc. We are a very wasteful country in many respects. The amount of ordering on line, just because... crazy to me. I understand To many people it's not.

It's a competition because adults allow it to be, I'm not sure why either.
Growing up, if I wanted something because others had it, my father would say, what Mr & Mrs have in their home/own is good for them, in this house we dont have it. End of story

Agreed. It’s not going to stop unfortunately though as things seem to get worse. Everyone wants bigger and better. Look at Halloween. The decorating was crazy this year. One trying to outdo the rest.

Or, maybe some people just really enjoy decorating - for themselves, not as a so called competition. Maybe you see everything that way, but not everyone does. I buy gifts for people I love and care about because I really enjoy doing something to make them happy - whether it's a $20 gift or a $100 gift doesn't matter. What matters to me is trying to do something for someone else. It's not a competition unless you make it one. Are most holidays over-commercialized? Sure. But it's extremely cynical to believe that it's all about "competition."

Agreed some just enjoy it.

I still think many try and compete to have better than others. Keeping up with the Jones' has turned into trying to outdo the Jones' with many things.

I was at my SILs house this weekend. She lives in a middle class neighborhood in central jersey. Her neighbors spend upwards of $1500 to have people professionally hang their lights. That is completely insane to me even if you can afford it but if you are spending $1500 on Christmas lights when you are most likely living paycheck to paycheck or just have a small savings, I think it's grossly irresponsible no matter how much you like decorating. This was really eye opening for me.

That is a lot of money - but you have no idea what their finances are. I know several people who do the same - and can easily afford it. It makes them happy. Not how I would choose to spend my money, but why judge?

I can guess that it is probably an excessive amount of money for them to spend given the area that they live in, their professions, and the information that I know about them from my SIL.

ETA: going back to hmm's point - wouldn't it be better if they took that money and used it to by gifts for families in need? Wouldn't the lesson that would teach their children be more important than having your lights strung perfectly on your house? I guess that's my point.

You would think, right?

I think the season should be about accepting others, being kind and spreading the holiday spirit. What people do with their money is really none of our business to judge. You might think lights are excessive but maybe those people find spending a ton on wine every week or buying expensive handbags, getting their nails done excessive too. Maybe people should donate that money as well? Everyone needs to stop judging things that have nothing to do with them. If they are not asking me for money then I don't give a hoot what they spend it on. And as a disclaimer I do not pay to have my lights hung but I wish I did lol.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon ITA!

Judging how people spend their money when you know NOTHING about their finances reeks of insecurity and envy. How others choose to spend their money or live their life is absolutely nobody's business. Period. Some people need to spend A LOT more time being concerned about what goes on in their own lives instead of speculating about and judging others lives. What a waste of energy.

Why is insecurity and envy/jealousy always your go to? I can assure you I am definitely not jealous of the people in my SILs neighborhood. In fact, by nature, I am not a jealous person mainly because I have everything in life that I want and need. And then some, to be completely honest.

Frankly I don't really care how they spend their money. I said I find it irresponsible. I didn't say I found it reprehensible. Try learning some vo-cab-u-lary.

She thinks everyone is jealous if they state something she doesn’t believe.

I am not sure why I am now not happy in life because I don’t try and keep up with the Jones’ and go into debt to impress others. Honestly some could learn a few tips from us poor people as we know how to stretch a dollar and still be happy. Some will never be happy even with a ton of money.

This conversation has nothing to do with me or my life, I haven't once talked about anything I have, spent my money on or have done for the holidays. YOU are the one who has made it about me which is just bizarre but typical.

Back to the actual conversation.........

On this thread alone you have criticized and put down anyone who:

* Buys a lot of gifts at Xmas
* Decorates for Xmas early
* Puts up too many Xmas decorations
* Spends money to have lights professionally hung
* Uses their credit card when they Xmas shop
* Buys a real tree too early for your liking

......... and on and on and on.

It begs the question - Why do you care and why does what others do with their time, money or life bother you so much?

You have a VERY obvious chip on your shoulder when it comes to people with money, you assume that anyone who can afford a nice lifestyle does so just to rub other people's face in it and that you are so much happier than "people like that" because (in your words) "you're poor".

What a miserable outlook on people and life you have.

Didn’t you just post about Black Friday and the “great” deal you got on a TV? One that costs thousands of dollars.

Once again it doesn’t mean anyone is rich who has material things or buys more than others. Did you even watch the video I posted?

I don’t know. Windy and I get along just fine and I wouldn’t put myself anywhere close to poor…. I don’t think it’s about people with money. I think it’s more about your behavior specifically making off hand remarks to try to subtly show everyone how fortunate you are. Whether it be your husband’s executive status or your library. And while I don’t think you’re one of the people wracking up credit card debt to live a lifestyle beyond your means there are plenty of people that are. She’s not speaking specifically about YOU but about people who go into credit card debt just so they can have their Christmas lights professionally strung and have the top toys overflowing under the tree on christmas morning.

I don’t think it’s competition at all and I don’t think it’s keeping up with the Joneses. I don’t really care how people spend their money. Then again, I sat and debated spending 3€ on an N95 Xmas mask. I bought three but the debate was strong in my head. Chat Icon. I bought three, but I’m not trying to compete with anyone for the best mask.

I know what it means and I find your question odd.

People spend their money on things they want. Who cares?

Why do you care so much?

I buy gifts for people I love and care about because I really enjoy doing something to make them happy - whether it's a $20 gift or a $100 gift doesn't matter. What matters to me is trying to do something for someone else. It's not a competition unless you make it one. Are most holidays over-commercialized? Sure. But it's extremely cynical to believe that it's all about "competition."

So what do you think keeping up with the Joneses means?

I know what it means and I find your question odd.

People spend their money on things they want. Who cares?

Why do you care so much?

Some of these comments are ridiculous Chat Icon I don't know why people care so much what others do. It's so weird.

My tree was up on my Birthday, which was well before Thanksgiving. I decorate a lot. I do a lot. I buy a lot. My kids have a lot of great experiences. Not to "show" it to anyone else. Because *I* enjoy it. My kids enjoy it. The end. It's getting old to see the "showing off" comments when it comes to how other people do life and what they do with their money. Live and let live.

Nobody has said there aren't people who don't try to keep up with others. The point you're missing over and over again VB is WHY DO YOU CARE???? What anyone does with their money, whatever the choices people make for themselves is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS and unless you know someone's financial picture or are part of their household stop making assumptions about their happiness, their debt load, or their motivations for doing things. It makes you look petty, envious and insecure.

You are overly concerned about what everyone out in the world is doing from how much they have, where they live, the size of their house, what they spend, if they are vaccinated, if they wear masks and the list goes on. Do you and mind your own damn business. Nobody in the world owes YOU an explanation for how they are living their life and that's the point everyone is trying to get across to you.

If someone goes into debt at Xmas........their business.

If someone wants to buy a two million dollar house........ their business.

If someone wants to wear a mask until the end of days....... their business.

If someone wants to spend all of their money on vacations and material things....... their business.

Nobody cares what YOU think about everyone and everything in the world. ALL you do on LIF is rail on against anyone who lives their life differently than poor little you. You are the most cynical, negative, grumbling, conspiracy ridden human I've ever come across.

No one said EVERYONE does things to show off but if you don't think things have gotten bigger and bigger through the years TO show off, then you are living under a rock.

You are a photographer, correct? Isn't this a BIG thing now that so many do to be like everyone else? Have your shoots gotten bigger and bigger and more extravagant over the years?

It's so clear that her obsession with other people, how they spend their money and trying to put down anyone who has more/spends more than she does are obviously signs of her insecurity and jealousy. She can deny it all she wants - the fact that she views everything as a competition, and everyone doing things to "show off" is nothing more than proof of that. The more she protests, the more proof of her jealousy comes out. (I have personal experience with someone in my life who was exactly like this - to the extent that they actually told me they believe I did things, went on vacations etc. JUST to show her up Chat Icon . Some people will never understand that it is SO completely NOT about them, but just about living life the way I (or you - general you) want to. It's called narcissim)

I never said it had anything to do with my life and showing ME up. That is their issue whom they are trying to impress and once, again, sigh....did you watch that video? This is not something I have made up in my head but I am old enough to see what has gone on through the years and with social media people try and impress others every single day. I feel bad for people who have to go into debt and spend all their time and energy just to be bigger and better than someone else.

I actually don't do many things that people jump on the bandwagon and do. It is just not my cup of tea. Even if I have the money, I don't find the need to do what everyone else is doing.
