I’m curious what schools are planning on doing.

I think mine is going to end up requiring masks. They said that even if your child wears a mask during school, if a child within 3 feet of them tests positive and is NOT wearing a mask your child will have to quarantine even tho they were masked.

So it sounds like to eliminate having kids who choose to wear a mask quarantining they are going to require all kids to wear a mask.

I’m kind of bummed by this because I was hoping they could take their masks off while sitting by themselves at their desk.

And no cafeteria for elementary again. But the parents are all bringing up the point that they will be longer than 15 minutes maskless while eating only 3 feet apart so doesn’t that void whole masking/close contacts? It’s a $hitshow in my district right now.

DD's school has been VERY quiet so far. The only thing I know is that kids will be required to wear masks. It's a Catholic school in Queens.

I feel like they are all waiting for neighboring districts to release their plans first lol they are starting to trickle out some info. And they don’t want to release it too early bc it’s such a split that either way they are going to deal with backlash and crazy parents.

Our district is requiring masks for all students and faculty indoors based on the current CDC recommendations- no masks will be required outside. Lunch will be in the cafeteria or outdoors depending on weather with assigned seats. Quarantine will be determined based on DOH guidelines. There will be no remote option unless an entire class is quarantined. Our district has a parent update meeting planned for next Friday. They have been really good at communication.

We haven't heard a peep about masks from our SD or from my oldest DDs Catholic HS which is bizarre to me since school starts in like 2 weeks.

I'm not surprised though considering they have no guidance and our stage government is a hot mess right now.

There is another post on this a few posts down.

Our district hasn't decided yet. The only district that has announced that masks are optional in the area is Plainedge. There are few in Western NY as well.

Haven’t heard a peep and school starts in 2 weeks. There is a board meeting I believe on the 24th so I am assuming that more info will be said then.

It’s a $hit show for sure and the most irrational idea ever! Where have been people eating all this time when eating out? Are they wearing masks while seating down? No. While eating? No. So what difference does it make if kids don’t wear a mask while at their desks and at the cafeteria??? It’s mesmerizing the rationale of these people!

All schools in my regional BOCES are requiring masks. Our superintendent said that all the superintendents agreed that a unified approach is important.

There will be no option for hybrid/virtual learning. A virtual school will only be offered through BOCES.

Same with my school.

But last year my school district quarantine a whole entire class no matter how close they were to someone positive and they all wear masks all day. So unless they change it masked or not my kids get quarantined. Chat Icon

If masks guarantees no quarantines I would have my DD wear a mask just for that reason cause she has lots of commitments she can not miss.

ETA: before the end of last school year my district announced there will be no virtual learning option next year except if you were quarantined

I am in NJ. Our district did send out an email blast that we are requiring masks for everyone. They are also issuing chromebooks to every student within the district. So even though we are all going back in person they want everyone to be prepared to use their school issued computers.

William Floyd is doing “hybrid masks,” which ...seemed to please the “parent’s choice” group. They feel it’s not perfect, but they can’t find much to nitpick over.

Remote option not available.

Opening of School:
We will be enacting a hybrid mask policy for the district, which means masks will not be required all the time, but must be in a ready position for all students, faculty and staff in certain circumstances. This is the plan that was in place in July 2020 before the governor mandated full masks. We feel that this is the best balance of safety while providing students with the opportunity to have more of a normal schooling experience.

The details are as follows:

Desk shields have been removed.

Students, while seated at their desks in their classrooms, will be permitted to pull their masks below the chin, but keep it in a ready position in case social distancing is no longer possible. This represents a majority of the school day for a student.

Students are also permitted to lower or remove their masks while seated and eating in the cafeteria.

Masks will not be required outdoors for recess, physical education and any outdoor learning.

Masks must be worn in small group instruction of less than three feet, when walking around the classroom, walking in the hallways or on the cafeteria line.

Masks will be required or for all students on all buses unless a student is medically exempt (this is a mandate from the U.S. Department of Transportation).

These hybrid masking requirements are vitally important to follow, so as to avoid any prolonged quarantining of students or staff.

"Students are also permitted to lower or remove their masks while seated and eating in the cafeteria."

....Well thank God they will allow them to pull them down while eating!
I was imagining having to puree the food and make a mask straw.

This. I hope my district adopts something like this. We never had desk shields to begin with so that doesn’t pertain but the rest sounds like a good compromise

We just got our options to vote on but, it comes down to mask or mask. It's either universal masking or mask if community spread is certain colors per the CDC Data Tracker. Unless you live in Nebraska - it's red pretty much everywhere right now.

Not sure what eating out has to do with schools. I didn't eat out until I was vaccinated, my kids don't eat in restaurants bc they're unvaccinated and it's not a necessity like school is.

If you're reading the news, there are districts all over the south that are back to virtual after a week or two bc masks are optional which means one case leads to a ton of kids in quarantine. Personally, I want my kids to go to school and stay in school and masks are the logical way to do that. My kids never once had to quarantine last year bc masks work. As much as my kids would love to go mask free I'm not interested in quarantines or virtual school this year.

Someone who attended a board meeting in my district posted our district is looking to do the hybrid mask model posted above. Final word will come down by 9/1 but unless the state comes out and mandates masks that is what they want to do.
They did let them go maskless that one day in June where there was some confusion on state orders on a Sunday night, so I had a feeling they would be looking to do something like this if possible.
We were also back full time in person from day 1 last year (at the elementary level)

I literally have never heard anyone saying they (including their children) have never eaten in a restaurant during these long 1 1/2 yrs because they weren’t vaccinated. If that’s what u did and are still doing (ur kids), u’re free to do so. If u want ur kids to wear a mask to go to school, u’re free to do so as well but u can’t expect every single person to do the same. U’re imposing what u think it’s best on others and that’s crossing limits. I’d feel the same way if it was the other way around and people would prohibit u from wearing a mask. They can’t and shouldn’t impose what they think it’s best on u.

I think most SDs are waiting until cuomo hits the road, Hochul replaces him, and then they’ll make a decision.

Exactly. They laid out what they would do if given the choice.
Who knows if they will have a choice.
