Insanely high quotes for work done on house
Do people purposely just give high quotes just because they don’t want to do the job and if that is the case why not just say it’s not worth their time or they don’t have time??!!
I am redoing my daughters room small hallway and my stair case walls with all new sheet rock.
We got one quote as long as my husband pulled all the old stuff out with materials it would Be $2500 to put up new sheet rock and spackle no painting, this include a new ceiling.
My DH decide he was going to just do the work himself which I didn’t want him to but lost the argument. Why didn’t I want him to do it on his own cause he takes forever to finish anything he starts. Well what do you know he started it put up all the sheet rock in my daughters room and now decides he doesn’t want to finish it 
My mom gave me the number of her guy (so different then original guy we used) to give me quotes for a different project. We decide to call him to see how much he would charge just to finish the work no materials needed as we bought everything (which cost us I think around $1300)
He quoted us $4000 to spackle my daughter room and do the hallway and staircase. I am floored it’s so much more than the original estimate I got which included the materials this quote doesn’t include any materials.
I don’t get it and he says it’s discount cause we are no to far from him.
How could it be such a difference in price??!!! even if I didn’t get the other estimate $4000 to do what I’m asking is crazy the space isn’t that big.
I keep being told that he probably just priced the job high because he didn’t wanna do it which is so dumb cause just say you don’t want to. We are going to be doing a lot of more projects around the house and he just lost my business which clearly he doesn’t care about but still. I will never recommend him either and I told my mom for any more projects get other quotes because I think he’s ripping her off.

Unfortunately it is a small, labor intensive job. They can make more doing other more lucrative jobs. It is like that model who said she would not get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day decades ago. Now some materials do cost more these days, but he is basically giving you the make me get out of bed to do your job price.

Which I get but say that. He has now lost me contacting him to do bigger projects like new bathrooms we are going to do. Possibly doing my basement and I have now told my mom not to use him anymore. And my mom used him to build a small deck in her backyard I think to paint some rooms so It’s not like he doesn’t do any small jobs.
Either way like I said $4000 to spackle one room and put sheet rock up in a tiny hallway I mean maybe it will be five pieces of sheet rock to put sheet rock up in the hallway and my hallway stairs with him needing to buy no material Is crazy.
I got my whole entire bottom of my house spackled for $650 granted it was 9 years ago but still !!

Handymen are in high demand right now - he probably wants to make it worth his while for doing since he could probably make more doing something else.

We had a fence we needed repaired- the posts had sunken into the ground and caused the fence to be not level and also our gate wasn't opening properly.
We called a few fence companies to get estimates to fix it.
All 3 that we called showed up, gave an estimate, then when we called to schedule the work never got back to us.
After the first one did that, we told the 2nd guy the story and he said- wow that was so unprofessional, he should have told you he didn't want the job.
Then HE turned around and did the exact same thing.
As did the 3rd guy we tried.
To this day, our fence isn't fixed. DH has decided to do it himself actually. He just needs to find time
No fence company will come out for a $500 repair. none.
So once you get the fence installed- you are on your own.
Your repair is not worth their time.
It's pretty sad

Some contractors are very greedy. At least they called back as so many don’t.
Many years ago my coworker recommended her cousin to do our driveway. Called, made an appointment. Was outside at the time and literally watched them drive by, look at the driveway that probably was too small for their liking to do and never call me. I told her and she was shocked. In turn another coworker recommended their family too and we used them and even decided to hire them to do pavers also so the first company, if they showed up, might have gotten a bigger job if they just stopped and tried to sell us more.
That seems like a lot of money honestly as we have done this to one of the kids rooms and had a friend do it and it was pretty cheap.

The same thing happened with work that we wanted done - someone got back to me yesterday for something we asked to have done 2 months ago. I found someone else to do it (but it still was a month after I first asked this guy... he dragged his feet for awhile but once I found someone it was 2 weeks). Even the people I found to do it though tried to pass us off as they were working on other jobs but we re-arranged our schedule for it and the day they wanted to return didn't work

It’s crazy so many are so unprofessional.
No one can convince me $4000 is a reasonable for the job I need done lol but I’m general if these people Would just be upfront and say listen it’s not worth my time doing this small of a job so I have to charge you high I would respect that then. At least I could understand and then maybe negotiate and say well I do need more work done how about if we get all this done what’s the price then.
Looks like I will have to be on a hunt for someone who does this work on the side where maybe then it’s worth their time cause it’s not their main income.

I could be that materials are more expensive now. Also time and getting enough men to do the job goes into the price.

4k is ridiculous. I think they just have so much work right now because everyone is remodeling, so they throw out insane numbers and see if anyone takes it. We've been doing so much work to the house and some of the estimates we've gotten are literally insane. I was seriously just quoted 32k for a small guest bathroom renovation and they can't start until Oct.
I have found a few reasonable companies for things like carpentry, spackling, paint, etc. Where are you located? Maybe they work in your area too.

Work is so in demand right now it’s not even funny. 193ft of plain pvc fence just cost me over $7k. And the price went up per section and I needed one extra section I was so angry. My pool, we were going to do a semi inground then changed to a full in ground, still using the same pool company, they are charging us $3500 more for the same pool (inground) they initially quoted us on and we only changed our minds a month later. 1 month cost went up $3500.
Everything else my husband has been doing because we can’t get anyone even reasonable so lighting, my husband brother rewired and updated all our electric and installed overhead lighting because the one person we got to come to the house wanted $11k for the job. We did it for $300 so there’s that….

So the first quote was extremely low IMO. I just finished a major renovation on my house and that first quote seems out of line. This is why you always get 3. And my rule of thumb is never take the low one.

Insanely high quotes for work done on house
I’ve called 8 different companies for quotes on pavers and retaining walls and not one has called me back. My next step was calling someone on LI and throwing them a little extra on top of their travel costs but it sounds like that won’t work either!

I already have all the material cause my husband was doing it himself then decided he doesn’t want to finish it cause I keep getting on him cause he is taking forever
The $4000 is just for labor!! The job would probably be I think 3-4 days maxed and it wouldn’t even be full days but I know with Spackling you have to do a coat and then let it dry before doing another one. It’s a crazy price.

I didn’t think it was that low but maybe it was. The space i am doing isn’t really that big at all. But the first guy was Recommended to us from someone my husband works with who uses him in his house and he also does work for the company my DH works for maybe he gave us a slight deal but he didn’t say he did. My DH friend/coworker was please with his work so if my DH calls him back and he is available I’ll probably just go with him.
