Fraudulent Unemployment Claim

I know there was a thread on this a few months back.

Over the weekend I received a debit card that I never requested. It said I should call to activate it, the usual when you get a debit card.

I called the bank it came from (which was an online banking app) and they said they had no record of an account in my name and to just destroy the card and disregard it.
I found that odd but whatever.

Then yesterday I get a letter from NYS Unemployment saying I need to log in and verify my identity before they can pay my unemployment benefits.

I realize that debit card was probably for UE benefits.

I logged on to the NYS UE website and reported it as fraud.
They said I had no further action to take and they would contact me if they needed more info

I feel like I should do something else though. I'm not thrilled that someone had my info and SS# to try to file an UE claim in my name.

Did this happen to anyone else and what did you do?

Sorry that happened to you. I would also move to freeze your credit through the 3 bureaus, just in case.

It’s free to do and will keep you (your money and credit) safe. Jot down the confirmation # because you will need it for each of you ever have to lift the freeze (like if you need to take out a loan, open new card, run a credit check, etc).

Same thing is happening to my husband. He's gotten a bunch of letters and reported it as fraud to UE multiple times. He received the debit card after that. He also let his HR department know so they're aware of it. At this point, we're thinking of changing our bank account info. and getting new debit cards just to be safe but it's such a process since so many things are linked to our account (mortgage, insurance...). It's next on the list though.

Hubby got letters too but the last 2 digits of SS# were incorrect.
He finally got a letter saying action was taken and he didn’t have to do anything.

Happened to me and several people I know.
I also reported it to the IRS
NYS UE
and I put a freeze on my SS# at all the credit agencies and notified social security.
There was a suggestion for a police report but I didn't do that.

Just call any one of the major credit reporters (Experian, Transunion, Equifax) and go through the prompts. I believe once you freeze with one company they communicate to the other companies. Good luck.

Thank you! It's really scary how rampant this is lately.

Re: Fraudulent Unemployment Claim

I just got a notice from the DOL this week that they needed more information from me for my claim.

I as about the 8th or 9th person in my office to be a victim.

I forwarded it to our outside payroll/HR company. They advised me to go online at the NYS DOL website - there's a link to file a fraud complaint.

Then they sent me this:

Any worker who finds them self the victim of an imposterUI claim should utilize the following bullet points  to report the incident. ?It is critical that the impacted individual utilize these directly and not the     employer.

During the reporting process, information will be solicited which only the individual will have access and/or which is only known by the individual.

? Report the incident to? ?https://identitytheft.gov/? which is managed by the Federal Trade  Commission

? Report the incident to the state UI agency in which the imposter claim was filed using the  “Employee / ID Theft Victim” links below

? Place a freeze alert on your credit record with each of the 3 credit bureaus:  ? Equifax - 866/349-5191 ? Experian - 888/397-3742 ? TransUnion - 800/680-7289 ? Order a free credit report at ?https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action? (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are currently offering free weekly online reports through April 2021)

? Contact your financial providers (banks, credit card companies, and so on.) to flag irregular transactions

I received confirmation yesterday via mail from the DOL that the received my report of fraud.

Re: Fraudulent Unemployment Claim

Just want to say thank you to everyone.

Thursday I got a piece of mail for someone that lived in our house over 20 years ago from the dept. of labor.

Friday I got 2 more pieces of mail for the same person from the department of labor again.

I was able to track them down from my neighbor. She was so thankful that I got in touch with her. She didn't even know where to begin.

My husband was a victim of identity theft when we went to file our taxes years ago. But I was telling her about how many people this is happening to from here. And from past experience and your experiences, what she needed to do.

But can you imagine how many people it happens to and they don't even know? She was saying she hasn't used her maiden name in over 20 years. (The unemployment was in her maiden name.)

Fraudulent Unemployment Claim

I received an unemployment insurance benefit determination notice last week, I tried to call the department of labor but couldn't get a live person on the phone. Finally called the fraudulent claims labor department; when talking with the representative she told me they had already marked the claim as fraud. She also told me to contact FTC.gov and put a claim in. I notified my HR department.
