Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

Has anyone been thinking about what they will or won't do for Thanksgiving?

For years, my Boy Scout Troop has a huge (over 50 people) family style meal together, where we are all elbow to elbow in one big room, we all bring a potluck dish, and we all share our food.... since that breaks nearly every restriction imaginable right now, we obviously won't be doing that.... Chat Icon

As for home, we haven't had a huge meal in a while. Just a few family members over two or three days. We may still be able to figure something out with that and follow guidelines.

I really don't want to do a Zoom Thanksgiving.... Chat Icon

Re: Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

I have been thinking about that. We host TG every year and it’s usually just my inlaws (MIL, FIL, SIL, BiL and their kids) sometimes we have extended family and friends who don’t have family local.

I’m not sure this year. Especially if the kids stay in school. I would still have my MIL & FIL if the numbers are still on the low side. If they jump up, for everyone’s safety, we will cancel TG this year

Re: Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

I’m hosting it this year and my sister is going to do Christmas and New Years. My family has stopped social distancing with each other since July 4th.

Re: Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

We host and will have our family over. We have been seeing them since July. We all take a lot of precautions. In July it was only outside. This past weekend it was inside. My kids are the only ones “in school” and they are virtual. My SIL is a NYC teacher. Everyone else is work from home. So the only person I worry about being with others is my SIL, but she has an infant, and I know she is taking every precaution available.

Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

We haven't been social distancing with our families since about May/June. We had 16 people (including us) for my daughter's birthday in August. And, we've been going to my parents' house for dinner there (11 people total). So, we'll probably do something for Thanksgiving, unless there is a spike and we're told not to.

Re: Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

The restaurant we go to every year is open and doing Thanksgiving so business as usual
We have been seeing my family since May so no need to change anything.
I don't do zoom. For anything ever.
I'd rather do nothing

We aren't sure yet. Our normal holiday is 20-25 people. The extended family hasn't gotten together since March, of course. Actually I think last occasion was New Years. We originally had said no Holidays this year, but as we just lost our third family member in 4 months this week, we are thinking we may just have to go ahead since our numbers are fast dwindling and people will not still be alive next year. So we will see. But there will be no hugging/kissing - I'm from a big Italian family.

Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

It is way too early to plan for the end of November now. We will need to see how school reopening affects the numbers and then the colder weather. My DS and I are both returning to school so it does concern me to see older family members even if we are taking precautions. I do not want to be unknowingly responsible for someone's death.

Re: Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

We normally stay with my parents and see my aunt and 2 cousins. My aunt passed away just last week so this year is going to be tough.

My mom is also very nervous about the kids being in school and exposing her so not sure she would want us to come and stay over.

Me and my mom do Black Friday shopping every year. I normally get my big items online anyway but it’s a tradition and I enjoy getting the stocking stuffers, gift wrap, and random gifts from home goods or wherever. I assume this will all be online this year.

Even if we don’t see my family, I would cook a traditional meal for my family of 4. I did this a few years back when my mom went in the hospital the day before unexpectedly.

So I guess we will have to wait and see.

Covid sucks.

Our Thanksgivings are no more than 9 people. Up to five of those people may not be able to come anyway due to various reasons (mostly travel-related). If they travel, they will do the mandatory 14-day quarantine since they live in states on the list.

In sum, we're a small group anyway, so we'll be doing our regular thing, whether we're 4 people or 9.

Too early to decide on TG. With schools and colleges opening up coupled with flu season who knows where the numbers will go.

Don't order your turkey yet :)

Same, business as usual for us. So unless we’re all sick, a death in the family or government tries to step in, we will be celebrating all the holidays. Including Halloween, since my sister decided to throw a party to give the kids something exciting during this depressing school opening.

My husband has been working this whole time anyway, so I’m not worried about the numbers going up. They have been projected to go up every month since May. And I always said if they go up, it will happen in the fall with the Flu & cold season, which, is common sense.

I’m still having my holidays with my family. I work in the hospital and am all for social distancing and masking wearing and have seen this from the inside. I still think holidays with immediate family are more than ok as long as no one is actively sick. We lost my MIL suddenly from cancer within a few months of diagnosis. Life is too short to miss time with family. Just be smart about being around sick people, hygiene etc

Re: Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

We usually have about 20 or so people and my parents hosts each year. However most of those people have moved this year so it will naturally be smaller and as far as I know my parents will still host. Even if all were still moving close by she still would have hosted.

I don’t zoom any events but I can see my mom zooming or calling my cousins just to say hi because she will be missing them!

Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

thanksgiving is relatively small for us as we have about 10 people total, Just us, my parents and my sister and kids. We have been seeing them since July so that shouldn't be a problem. Christmas though, we have aunts, cousins etc. and we are about 30 people. We may just keep christmas to the core people this year depending on what is going on.

I think this is the main thing.
Life really is short.
I know a lot of people who have died since March- not related to Covid- and all I can think of is, damn he couldn't go on that last trip with his family or damn they couldn't see their grandkids in their last months on earth, or they couldn't celebrate their last family holiday together. And what takes them out? Something other than the virus we are all so petrified of and paralyzed by.
Really makes you think.

For Thanksgiving - we will probably just do a small gathering at my Uncle's house. A lot of my family is still seriously socially distancing and a lot live out of state so I am doubtful they will come.

For Christmas - we usually have a huge crew so I don't see that happening - since again, a lot of folks are out of state. But - we were pretty cautious this past Christmas since the Christmas before we had a huge stomach bug outbreak..

Yes. I think about this too. The last time my mother was ever at my home was Thanksgiving. She had a stroke shortly after, lived in a nursing home for almost a year, and then died. It's one anecdotal example, but it sticks with me.

Re: Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

Unless it is warm and can eat outside I do not think we will have a gathering on my side of the family. On my my husbands side there have been no gatherings so I think it will be just any Thursday.

If virus numbers are like they are now, we will have our normal thanksgiving which is around 16 people. Same for Christmas. Then again last Christmas many of us had just gotten over the flu and others came down with it the following week so that was a bad time for sickness. We will have to decide as we get closer. I'm not doing a zoom holiday though. I really can't stand the idea. We will all just do our own thing

Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

I’m delighted to probably not have to go to my in-laws this year! If schools are closed again, they probably won’t have their normal 35 person gathering.
It doesn’t bother me at all to spend a holiday at home with just my DH and kids.

Any thoughts about Thanksgiving?

Regardless, we will probs do our normal thing. In-laws, my parents, my sister and BIL. They all rotate watching our kids anyway while we are at work, so it wont make a difference anyway...
