Returning to a previous employer -Advice please
Advice needed.
So I left my last job in summer of 2019. Basically it was because the work required an insane number of hours and I have 4 school aged kids. However I loved the work and the people I worked with.
This new position is less hours but the work is boring and the person I report to is toxic. She has been with the company for 20 years but they don’t seem to respect her. But the company also allows her to make me and others miserable. I am struggling with my self esteem here where I was respected at my prior employer.
My old employer asked me if I wanted to come back. The only reason why I am considering it is because I want to move to S.C./N.C. and I could work completely remote for my previous company. Of course I would make sure to disclose the before I returned to the previous employer. But I am sure they would be fine with it.
The struggle is that even working remotely the number of hours will likely still be insane! Which is the reason why I left. Decisions decisions....

I would just make it clear to the prospective employer that you have four kids and while you will always put in 100% there will be times when you require more work life balance to deal with family issues.
I think as long as you are up front with them before you are hired you can’t feel bad if things come up after you are hired. Sounds like a great opportunity!

Can you look more broadly at other opportunities? I know the market is tough right now but neither of these options seem to meet your needs.
Are you able to suck it up with your toxic boss until things improve or while you book for something else?
Sorry, I’ve had toxic bosses and totally get there’s a point of no return and the toll it takes on your life.

I have thought about that too. Suck it up until we are ready to make the move and then find something in N.C./SC when we move.
I guess I could take a little more before I get to the point of no return.
I thought a good distraction was to work on a CFP license . I am already a CPA.

I have worked for toxic bosses and it is horrible but, neither situation sounds ideal.
If you do consider your previous role, I agree with Ave - be up front with your expectations from the start and see what they will do.
At the end of the day you need to see what would be a better situation for you - more work or toxic boss?

It is much easier to negotiate a better work-life balance with a reasonable employer who values you than it is to try to survive a toxic work environment with unfulfilling, boring work where you aren’t respected. Being that your previous employer contacted you to invite you back, I would negotiate a better balance. It sounds like they’d grant it for you.

I would see what you can negotiate with your previous employer. They must want you back if they are asking you back. Perhaps they can agree to a schedule that is more suitable?

It all depends on what you are willing to put up with. I honestly would rather put in the insane hours than work with a toxic manager

I find working more hours remotely is more manageable then doing it from an office. I can step out to take my son somewhere but then log back in at night if needed.

I will say they tried to grant me a better work life balance before I left but I didn’t believe them. I didn’t want to be out of mind because the didn’t see me in The office. Now everyone is remote and they have made accommodations.

I’m guessing this is due to how your job is classified as it cause overtime issues.
And if the op is told to be available x-y then she Wouldn’t be working crazy hrs as it would be more of a 9-5 thing.

Does your previous employer know you left because of the work hours? If they do and they're offering you to return then they're aware and it doesn't hurt to work that out with them. Explain your situation to them. It may work out for you. I hope it does. Good luck!
