No matter how you slice it, if school buildings do not reopen in September, the children who will suffer are the poor & minority children. Their parents don't have the means to hire fancy tutors, the ability to work from home or quit their jobs, who had nothing before the pandemic, and now have less than nothing.
Here’s a question. Why do minority children automatically get lumped into the poor category?
It’s not the poor and minority children who would suffer from this ... it’s the poor. Period. That’s it. Not all minority people are poor without means to do more for their families.
If this had happened when I was a child, I would be disadvantaged immediately because I was poor. White - but dirt poor.
While a lot of the POC who I grew up with had it way better (financially) than I did.

I understand it very well.
Socialism:

I'd much rather live in a society where I get to decide my life than more governmental influence.
And there are plenty of "wealthy" people who have been hurt by this pandemic as well. My boss hasn't taken a paycheck since March - because his main concern is to meet the payroll of the staff.
I'm all for giving people help when they need it and don't want to see funding for things like Section 8 housing, food stamps, etc., cut, but to say capitalism is the root of all evil?
I think you're confusing social policies with economics....

I disagree. I know some very wealthy people who are not doing well at all. Their business can’t open or sales are non existent. They are selling things off trying to make ends meet. On the other hand I know people whose businesses are thriving and never skipped a beat.
But there are people on the other end who continued to work and their income never changed, or those that made more on unemployment.
The problem is many people don’t plan for emergencies. We live within our means and don’t buy new “Things” just because. Think about when we were younger, our parents didn’t have 2-3 new cars, we wore hand me downs and got used toys, we didn’t do take out, we never bought coffee....let alone at $5 a day. We don’t live simple like this anymore. We just spend and spend with no safety net. I hope this is a lesson for everyone to start saving.
I've read enough of your posts to know we will never agree and I don't know why I'm bothering, but the difference is that "very wealthy people" can take the hit MUCH better than the poor and middle class.
When I say "middle class", I include people like small business owners many of whom I know are suffering.
And your last paragraph ignores so many realities of our fellow citizens. We have glaring inequalities fueled by so many things including wage stagnation, corporate greed (look at the corporate tax rate over time!), absurdly high health care costs, and the lack of a social safety net.
I could go on but the info is out there and people will think what they want to think. I'm not going back and forth. I just hope that people who recognize that we as a country have work to do and that we are only as good as our weakest go to the polls in November.

I am curious as why does it bother you to say minorities will be at a greater disadvantage because of this?
I feel like there is some confusion. Yes, the poor communities (all races within), will be greatly impacted by this and may never rebound. But we have to realize that the majority of the people who will be effected by this are blacks & hispanics.
A few weeks ago, when all the white people were asking what can they do? How can we learn? How can we help? It's not websites and reading books to your kids. It's being aware when things like this happen. When Governors decide to shut down schools, we are putting the black communities at a very big disadvantage. To me when people understand this and come to these conclusions on their own, is when we are finally making progress.
This isn't directed at you but TBH all I hear now from people when it comes to school is everything but the above. Yes, Cuomo and Murphy mention it but their actions aren't enough. Right now, CA already failed these communities.
Im not trying to make this a pissing contest and say there aren't other races effected. Trust me, My DH's white side of the family lives in these underprivileged communities. So i'm not ignorant to think all white people are rich and all black people are poor.
Also realize people like you and I are not the norm, even till this day. I say this because I am making the assumption that you had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get where you are today.

if you don't agree with Jenn P or Mrs rainbow 1000% of the time you are bullied. You are a racist as well. When they give up 50% of all they have and their future earning to help the poor minorities I will maybe listen to them until then they are just back round noise. I was essentially called a racist because I back the blue. I was also called a racist because I care about all black lives, including babies being killed in strollers. Because of that I am stupid, don't get it and a racist. If that makes me a racist, then I am one.

Think about when we were younger, our parents didn’t have 2-3 new cars, we wore hand me downs and got used toys, we didn’t do take out, we never bought coffee....let alone at $5 a day. We don’t live simple like this anymore. We just spend and spend with no safety net. I hope this is a lesson for everyone to start saving.
I've read enough of your posts to know we will never agree and I don't know why I'm bothering, but the difference is that "very wealthy people" can take the hit MUCH better than the poor and middle class.
When I say "middle class", I include people like small business owners many of whom I know are suffering.
And your last paragraph ignores so many realities of our fellow citizens. We have glaring inequalities fueled by so many things including wage stagnation, corporate greed (look at the corporate tax rate over time!), absurdly high health care costs, and the lack of a social safety net.
I could go on but the info is out there and people will think what they want to think. I'm not going back and forth. I just hope that people who recognize that we as a country have work to do and that we are only as good as our weakest go to the polls in November
Yeah I guess we shouldn’t care about the wealthy people during this. You know, the wealthy ones who worked their entire lives And sacrificed to create their ‘fortune’. The wealthy people who often employ people in your neighborhood, the wealthy people who spend money in your neighborhood. Who cares about them. Trickle down.....
And I’m not talking about billionaires getting bailouts. I’m talking about normal Long Island “wealthy” people who lost everything and still have families to feed. But who cares about them....

When they give up 50% of all they have and their future earning to help the poor minorities I will maybe listen to them until then they are just back round noise. I was essentially called a racist because I back the blue. I was also called a racist because I care about all black lives, including babies being killed in strollers. Because of that I am stupid, don't get it and a racist. If that makes me a racist, then I am one.
I would HAPPILY pay Nordic country tax rates if we had those benefits - medicare for all, free or low cost college, etc.
Numerous posters have tried to explain it you over the years. Personally, I am finished. Here is an excellent reading list.

There is some real BS in this.
I have only seen one person on this site grow with even a shred of humility (nycbuslady) about the systemic racism and inequities on this island. everyone else continues to double down with their fragility and retreat into their own echo chambers and tone policing of Black and Brown people because you simply cannot give up the existing power structures to anyone else. white people are not the center of the universe right now. stop acting like blue lives is a freaking race - it's a damn uniform you can take off at night.
