Truly enlightening - how discrimination ingrains itself

I was shown this video years ago in a law school class. Just saw it posted on FB again today. It's really long, but is so enlightening as to how racism and discrimination impacts us - immediately. Even if you don't watch the entire thing, the first part, with the 3rd grade class shows how ingrained it can become in no time. I really wish all schools would run this exercise in class

I've been showing this to my classes every year since I started teaching over 20 years ago. They're entranced by it every single time. It's so powerful.

That's awesome! And great to hear that kids are actually effected by it. Would probably be even better if they actually participated in this exercise, but just seeing it is really great too.

That was a great video. The 2nd half was just as interesting. With just the 3rd graders, it's easy enough to dismiss it as "well, they're just little kids that are easily manipulated", but when you see how quickly it happens with adults, too, it really shines a light on how a lot of society thinks, and how quickly they can become victims or consider themselves the "better" people in society.

If this much discrimination and disdain for a certain arbitrary "type" of people can happen in half a day, just imagine when it continues all day, every day, for your entire life, and your parents' life, and your children's life....

We always talk about that -- about whether or not they'd want to do something like that. I teach high school, and we usually agree that it would be most effective at the age of the kids in the video (although they do say they'd be willing to do it at their age, too). I also am not sure I agree with Jane Elliot that it doesn't take a "super teacher" to do an exercise like this (quoting from memory so I might be a little off on her exact words there) -- but I do think it would take some major training to do this right.
