NYC teachers

A family member is a nyc teacher. She told me yesterday that there was a union meeting last week where the union specifically said if the CARES act is not passed no NYC school will open in the fall.

Re: NYC teachers

My friend is a teacher in Brooklyn and mentioned something similar. If there is no federal aid there might not be school. Its a real sin.

Re: NYC teachers

How is that possible? Wouldn't that violate people rights under the state constitution? If that happened, the NYS government would pay more defending the lawsuits stemming from not opening the schools, than it would cost to open the schools.

I think they meant there would no in person in school because they need the funds for PPE, accommodations, etc.

I know it is hard, but try to listen to anything until actual decisions are made. I work in a school Queens and we hear so many things. Summer school starts next week and we barely know how that'll work.

I don't believe the UFT can say that with certainty. NOTHING is certain. However, I do agree with PP who said that that would cause huge problems. It is one thing to keep schools closed if we experience a second wave as the summer goes on. But if we are still in a good position, COVID wise, they need to figure out how to get these kids back in school. All keeping the schools closed longer would do is further devastate the economy- how many people will have to quit their jobs to home school their kids?? This wouldn't be a NYC issue, this would be a state wide issue. Such a shame what is happening.

Re: NYC teachers

They meant that actual school buildings won’t open up. The new guidelines limit the amount of people- teachers and students- in one room. It’s now one body per 65 square feet. A regular size room would only hold about 8-9 people. Most classes have 28-30 students. There aren’t enough rooms and staff members. There’s a hiring freeze. The city has made budget cuts. There are about four options on the table.

NY state has come out with guidelines? Where can I find them? I thought Cuomo didn't say anything yet. I have a feeling many people will either do their own homeschooling program, or pay for private school, where student populations are much smaller and buildings bigger- more opportunities to socially distance.
I do believe 3K and Pre-K NYC programs will be cut from the budget.

I’m speaking of the CDC guidelines.

So even if numbers are super low and everyone else is back at work and school, NYC won't open their buildings? How would that even work? They are going to lose even more money and have to lay off even more teachers when people withdraw their children from the public school system.

I agree. The CDC guidelines are unrealistic. Parents should be preparing that their children might be home in the fall full-time or with on a hybrid model.

Everyone thinks it’s easy logistically, but there are so many things to consider.

It’s not the cares act it’s the HEROES bill. IF this doesn’t pass NYC won’t have the financial means to open school buildings safely. It’s a complete nightmare. Budget has to be finalized in a week.

well yes. They said if the heroes act doesn't pass, we can't open. We already had a 3% cut which is alot even though it doesn't seem like alot. I believe the heroes act was going to give a few billion dollars in aid. If we don't get that, we can't open the schools. Too much money is needed to meet all the requirements the school buildings need to meet

Re: NYC teachers

We just had a meeting about this.

My principal is preparing us to return in September. We are working on different models as the DOE has left it up to individual schools how to open at 50% capacity. A few models are being talked about including doing a half day for everyone (splitting classes in half and doing AM and PM sessions for elementary). Also, doing an every-other-week options where one group comes in week 1, then goes remote while the second group goes in week 2 and staggering that.

The goal is to get everyone back into the buildings. We have to keep the building capacities to 50% to start though, and that is the problem.

The HEROES act has to pass as well or we will lose tremendous amounts of funding. There is a hiring freeze but no plans to lay off teachers (yet). In order to open the way the CDD wants, they need to hire MORE staff, so without that money, they will not be able to open and be in compliance.

All of this is premature though as it is still June, by the end of August we will be well passed "phase 4".

Cuomo may severely cut school budgets across the state. This could become an issue for suburban schools as well.

Funding is going to be an issue across the board. But if schools close in NYC but are open in Suffolk I speculate those who have the means to relocate will do so. They already have been...

Most likely. I guess I am just not sure how any schools will be able to afford to open with CDC guidelines, LI included. Budgets passed, but state budget cuts haven't been announced yet, so those budgets may not hold. This is going to be a nightmare all across the country.
The saddest part, the children who NEED to be in school the most, the high risk children living in poverty, will be the ones whose parents can't afford to move to the suburbs, or enroll their child in a private school in the city. So they will be the ones stuck remote learning. The disparity will continue to grow...

it is already happening. Homes in my neighborhood are being snapped up. There is no inventory according to the local realtor. They are begging on the town board asking if people are thinking of selling basically saying there is a huge list of available buyers and zero homes on the market.

There was no inventory before the pandemic, either. I do think there will be an uptick in certain suburban areas. Emphasis on certain. There are many parts of LI a young, liberal millennial wouldn't set foot in.
