I agree to an extent.
Not everyone makes a living that allows them to save like that.
But I do think a lot of people live above their means. They want everything but don't need everything.

i completely understand that there are people who are truly poor.
but
as a society, we no longer value planning for a rainy day. we want what we want and we want it now. immediate gratification is all we know.

I think we should refrain from any sweeping judgements. Most of the people living paycheck to paycheck in this country make minimum wage. How do you live, let alone save on that.

I know it’s not surprising but I can’t believe all I am reading that majority of people can’t even survive a month since they have no savings. I know this is an unprecedented situation but I hope people learn to live within their means and save for their future.
Nothing wrong with treating your self to hair, nails, clothing, meals but at some point you need to re-evaluate these expenses if you can’t truly afford them.
Not everyone is born into a situation where they aren't living pay check to pay check. It's rude to make a statement like you did. Not everyone is poor because they live outside their means.
Have some decency at a time like this before making such a rude statement. People have enough to worry about without having to be judged

You are assuming that people have no savings because they are not fiscally responsible.
That is typically not true.
Our recovery from the Great Recession was a jobless recovery. Wages have not increased at the same rate as housing, food and health care. Although unemployment was low - that included many that were under employed or that fell off because of their long term unemployment.
Minimum wage can no longer be considered ample employment to support a family even if there are 2 wage earners.
Your statement is false and insulting to those that truly live paycheck to paycheck.
On the flip side - even if they are living paycheck to paycheck -people are entitled to little luxuries once in a while like a meal out or their nails done and deserve to do so without judgement.

Ditto to everyone else responding. Many people in America live paycheck to paycheck.
I heard this morning about many only have 1 month of savings and I calculated and that is all we have too.
Many want to save but things come up like accidents, medicals bills, etc. I personally started off this year with some savings finally and then things happened and it wiped it almost all out.
Not everyone gets raises all the time or bonuses and work in high paying jobs.
Most of us are happy if we are able to pay our bills and maybe have a little extra to treat ourselves and kids so we don't have to live in utter denial.
At this time when people are losing their jobs and could possibly lose loved ones, it is kind of rude to assume everyone is just out there blowing all their money. Do some? Absolutely.

I lived paycheck to paycheck with 1 months worth of savings for my early adult life. If this were then, I’d be screwed. Now, we have a better savings. Not that much immediately available because we put a lot into retirement. As much as we can actually. And as of yesterday - our 401ks are down more than my yearly salary.
So there are those who live paycheck to paycheck. And then people like us who don’t but save as much as we can and still getting killed. We thankfully have $ flow to get us through a few months. And of course a lot of credit. But wtf wants to do that?! We are gonna be broke when this is over and hope we haven’t lost all of our retirements.

This. I'm paycheck to paycheck, taking care of myself, by myself, as best I can. I can assure you , I don't live above my means. But thanks. Not like we aren't all stressed about the pandemic going on but now the poor can be shamed.

Nope, no one is entitled to luxuries such as getting your nails done.
I am talking about a need vs a want. Yes we need food but no you don’t need a steak dinner from a high end restaurant.
But then do we REALLY know how someone is paying for these things? Maybe they got a GC for a holiday or birthday. Things are not always in black and white. I might be out getting my hair done because I got a gc but using coupons in the store to buy groceries for my family.

Thank you for reminding me why I stopped reading this board. I made a comment which is true no matter how you want to look at it. As with everything there are different point of views and I stand by mine. This wasn’t a personal attack on anyone but then yet again anything written on this board someone is attacked.
No one is disagreeing that there aren't people out there that spend beyond their means but now is not the time to rub it in people's faces.
If you don't like being called out for being insensitive then leave and stop reading the boards.

Looking back at her other posts, she is a SAHM so if she is able to stay home AND have savings, she should be very grateful and not basically shove it in people's faces who have both parents working and just making it and may do extras to feel a little better because they feel like all they do is work and pay bills.

I'm surprised that people can be such judgmental @ssholes during such a stressful time, yet I know I shouldn't be.
Good lord. I cannot imagine thinking I knew about anyone else's financial situations. Some people literally cannot save - the cost of living is out of control and many people's salaries are not growing at the same rate.
This is a time for compassion and not judgement.
