Summer Camp - spinoff

What’s up with no camps being in session the last 2 weeks of August? I imagine many working parents would utilize this if it were offered....

I know it’s ridiculous, I usually have to make up 4 weeks since my son finishes the second week in June. Summer camp is for kids who go to school so why does it go according to college kid schedule. That makes a lot of sense.

At least I lucked out this year because they actually added an extended week for the last week of August this year. This is the first time I don’t have to take two weeks off at the end of summer.

Re: Summer Camp - spinoff

Camp is always 8 weeks. Never goes to the end of summer bc a lot of staff are teachers and get ready to go back to work, there are college students and a lot of camps are also schools during the rest of the year so they need to change over as well, close up the pools, clean the classrooms, etc.

I know it stinks, but there are a lot of programs that watch kids too.

Summer Camp - spinoff

Staff are college kids or teachers so if they were open the last 2 weeks they would have no staff. We just schedule one of the weeks as vacation and do our best with the other. This year my son is spending a week in FL with grandparents and then we go get him and take a few days as a family vacation

Who the heck else do you think is going to work at a camp that’s only open during the summer??
If it wasn’t for college kids working there, half of these places wouldn’t even exist.

This.

My sister worked in a camp from hs-college and she had to be back or be ready to be back by the end of August

I'm not sure why it's a big deal, you know camp ends early, make plans. I always take a week vacation. I am also lucky this year bc my ex is taking him for a week vacation too. But it's definitely do-able.

My SO's son goes to 12 month school, he also has off those two weeks.

Ok chill.. and I don't care or put thought into who the heck is managing or working at these camps because that's not my job. I just pay for the service. I didn't say they can't hire college kids but there is definitely a strong need for more weeks and if I was involved in creating camps, I would try to fill it.

Supply and demand. I don't know why you are taking it so personal.

Because not everyone has that flexibility with work. I am lucky that I can take a week/wfh for week or two weeks off in June and then another in August. However, this is not common for a lot of working people. That is all I am saying.

it's not easy, not everyone can take off or family that can watch their children. Some parents do it and lose money.

ETA: People on this board are not empathetic at all. It's easy for me to adhere to this schedule and even I get how bad it is for working parents. Just because its easy for me doesn't mean its not a big deal and people can just deal with it.

My kids camp goes until Aug 22, so we luckily only have 6 days...and really 1 since we take a family vacation the last week of August (for this reason).

Agree wish we had it until end of August. All camps are done by 2nd week In Westchester too!
We typically planned vacations for this time, but this year we had to attend something early in March and so we are stuck..

Mostly all of the programs at my DD's camp go though Aug 30th. The program that she is in, however, only runs until Aug 9th for her age group. So she'll be with my parents for 2 weeks and then the third week, me and DH are home.

I usually take vacation one week and we piece together the other week (our daycare has a camp that runs the whole summer, parents, etc).

I do feel that for the price of some of these camps (the ones that are $5k plus) they should offer coverage for the entire summer (I get that they have a lot of college kids and such but, for the price...)

Re: Summer Camp - spinoff

Where I live now we just have 1 week to cover before school starts. In NY it was 2. DH works in education, so we can never take a family vacation at that time, he is very busy. Thank God for my mom, she would always help us out otherwise I would be wasting 2 weeks of my 3 weeks vacation time. I hate to use the word waste, but I cherish taking my time off to do fun family things, together.

Summer Camp - spinoff

I have found some less traditional camp programs for my daughter at the end of the summer- this summer she is going to camp at the Bronx zoo. My second choice was camp at the skating academy where my daughter takes lessons. These programs are run mainly by the full time staff with support from seasonal help. I could not take off the last two weeks of August and started looking for options back in December.

My daughters camp starts the last week of June and goes until the last week of August. This is our first year so not sure how they staff it, though I think some local colleges don't start until Septmeber, and I know a lot of the counselors go to school locally.
They also offer before and after care for low rates, very helpful to working parents. It's the fanciest camp ever, but the kids love it and it works for my schedule.

Last year I hired a local high school senior for the last weeks of August, and the last week of June. It wasnt cheap, but that's life.

I get it...I have kids and a FT job too. But it’s not the camp’s (or anyone else’s) responsibility to worry about what I’m going to do the last 2 weeks of August. Even if the demand is there, they don’t have the staff to safely take care of the kids who need to attend.

There are alternate camps out there, you just have to look and book early. Or find a private sitter.

Where did anyone say it was the camps responsibility?? I think everyone on here knows it’s our responsibility to find care for our kids. Also alternate camps are not always out there for every location. They definitely don’t exist in my area.

Obviously people make it work but it doesn’t mean it’s not very difficult. All we are saying on this thread is it would be nice or make sense if more camps were available till end of August.

As someone who worked as a camp counselor at both day camps and sleep away camps, I can give you some insight on schedules.

If the camp is only open seasonally and is closed (not in use) for the remaining months of the year, then everything needs to be broken down and stored for the off season. When I did sleep away as a counselor, we arrived a week before the campers to set up and open up the facilities. We also stayed after all the campers left to store everything. So, even though camp ends, staff needs to stay on to clean up and put away for next season. This was true at both camps I worked for.
