Bathroom etiquette w child?

Ok this is stumping me now. My son is almost 10. They are off this week and I have a daughter who is younger. When you are out busy places alone and have to use the restroom with a boy that age what do you do? I usually don’t go to super crowded places alone with them. At a store or restaurant I’m ok with him waiting outside but what about like penn station or someplace busy? Can a 10 year old still come into the ladies bathroom? I am def not leaving him alone somewhere like that or letting him use the men’s room alone. Is that what other moms would do?

I have no experience but if you don’t want to leave him outside I’d bring him with you.

I would not find it odd if I saw a 10 year old boy in a bathroom with his mom.

Ditto. Nobody sees anything anyway- it's all in stalls. It's not like its an open forum and I'm peeing with a kid staring at me.
The only thing he'd see are people washing their hands.

I would bring him with you......yesterday I walked into the restroom at work and one of the other employees had her son in there with her. Not sure why he was at the office but he had to be about that age. I dont see a problem with it especially in a place like Penn

At that age he would definitely still go in the bathroom with me and wait by the door.

I think only changing rooms/locker rooms have age restrictions.
My son is younger but it wouldn’t bother me to see a boy with his mom. Thinks like this don’t bother me but I’m sure the older generation might have more of a problem.

I don't know if it would strike me as odd if I saw a 10 year old boy in a bathroom, but from a mom's POV there is no way I'd leave my child outside, or go into a public restroom alone so you really have no choice but to bring him. Don't even give it a second thought.

Bring him in the ladies bathroom with you. I see boys in the ladies room all the time, with their moms and I don't give it a second look.

I wouldn't give it a second thought. However, in the past, when my son was younger, usually the older women would make nasty comments. Like, you realize this is the ladies room, right?

As if a young boy would really be interested in looking at an old woman's crusty who ha.
And everyone is behind stalls anyway.

I don't think I'd be able to control my mouth to be honest.

Right! LOL

I do wish more places had family restrooms though, just for this reason. My son is MUCH older now, and can't go in the ladies room obviously, but has such anxiety going into the men's room with strangers. Chalk it up to his autism. So I LOVE when I can just send him in the single stall family restroom.

How does your son feel about it? At 10 neither of my boys wouldn’ve gone into the ladies room. They’d rather have peed in a Snapple bottle. Chat Icon They’re well aware that there are men’s and ladies rooms for a reason at that age and he might not be comfortable going with you.
I think at 10 they’re old enough to go into the men’s room unsupervised. It seriously take my kids9 seconds to pee and 10 to wash their hands. It’s a quick in and out. You just have to teach him to yell like a lunatic if he’s approached and get the hell out of dodge if he feels uncomfortable for any reason.

As for leaving him while you go into the bathroom.. you might have to in a pinch. I’m trying to remember what I did, but I have 2 boys a year apart so I probably just left them together. Strength in numbers.

Take him in and Fuk what eveyone else says or thinks. Your child is your only concern.

Like I said, it's not like anyone is standing around buck naked in there.

At a restaurant, maybe. But no way in hell I’ll sending my 10yr old into the Penn Station bathroom alone. I’m a grown woman and feel very uncomfortable in those bathrooms.
I also wouldn’t like to go in and leave him outside by himself. Although I guess at Penn that police booth is right there and I would have him stand right next to police booth and not move a muscle.

My son stop going into a ladies room at 9. In my opinion 10yrs old is too old to be going into a ladies. I was never in your situation so idk what I would do.

But actually my son waited for me outside of Seattle airport bathroom when we were travelling to Canada in Feb.

I might have a crusty old hoo ha, but I don't think it's appropriate for a 10 year old boy to be in the ladies room. Sorry - I don't feel comfortable with it.

If you are in a stall though- why?
What could the child be seeing?
Are you worried he will crawl under the stall and see something?

While I’m personally not bothered by it if you have your son in the restroom, I do know it would make my niece feel uncomfortable if she saw a 10+yr old in the bathroom. What about the younger girls we are teaching at that age about privacy?

I also think at some point you have to draw the line with boys on what’s appropriate and what’s not. One of my major concern is my son in getting in big trouble for a misunderstanding .

I am a city girl to the core. I’ve had people on LI tell me CPS would be called on me at the suggestion of a teenager taking the LIRR with their friends. I took the subway alone at 13.

I wouldn’t leave a 10 year old alone in Penn Station.

I agree but there is privacy in there. The stalls.
If it was an open locker room, shower, dressing room with no doors, I get it.
But a bathroom has private stalls.
So yes, teach your son not to crawl or look under the stalls, teach your daughters to go in a stall and lock the door, but other than that I don't see a privacy concern.
I honestly don't even know why there are separate ladies and men's rooms at all.
What is so private that you can't pee next to a man in the next stall?
Nobody is naked.

I've seen boys that look 10 in the ladies room. It's not that often, but it happens and it doesn't bother me. I think I would let him go alone at that age, but not at Penn Station.
