Re: Lump in breast Update

If you have a lump that you can feel I would schedule the Mamo asap. I don't mean to freak you out but how would the doctor know it's nothing to worry about without a mamo? I have a friend that finally got diagnosed with breast cancer after pointing out a lump and other suspicious things a couple years earlier and her doctor telling her it's nothing to worry about. By that time it was already very bad, required a double mastectomy and frankly she's lucky to be alive today. Not that you would wait that long but this is something you need to do immediately. I can't recall specifically but if I remember correctly you are already over 40 no? Do they not recommend mammograms for all women over 40 in Germany? Just having family members and friends go thru breast cancer I would never wait if I suspected something at all. A mammogram is a simple, noninvasive test that can be done in an hour. I know you are nervous but it's seriously nothing.

I am getting that mammo ASAP. My GP said it was nothing to worry about because of the way it felt. I am 41. I think that is the best I can do at this point. The doctor thought that I may have just hurt a muscle. They suggest mammos 35 + here.

I have my referrals all ready to go.

Glad you’re going in for a mammo soon.
They aren’t horrible. It’s uncomfortable and annoying and yes, can hurt a bit but they don’t take that long.

Re: Lump in breast Update

i went for my first mammo last year at 39 and another one this year after turning 40. My mom and mother in law both described how horrible this test is. I was terrified.

Please..i was in and out in 15 min. they gave me a nice warm robe to wear and while yes your boobs do get squashed in a big xray machine..its pretty quick.

is it uncomfortable yes. but not much more than that from my experience.

I do have dense breasts too.

Yeah, they don’t give robes to wear here. You just strip down to get to the parts they need. At the gyno here, you just get naked. Same thing with GPs. In hospitals, they don’t even give you a gown. I’m just used to it by now. When my SO was in the hospital for a few days, I had to bring his PJs and all other things he needed. When I was in the hospital (it was a day ER visit) I had to wear regular clothes. I’m not expecting a warm robe at all.

But I’ll just get it done with. Better safe than sorry.

Ha, I used to be, too. But then I couldn’t go to the sauna and spa if I wanted to wear a bathing suit. There are some that you can wear a suit to, but not really a lot.

By strip down, I mean that they get to the parts they need. So when I went to the gyno pants and underwear came off. I was allowed to have my top on until she did the breast exam part. At the doctor the other day, I had to have my shirt and bra off. When I went to the hospital, when they were checking my heart, etc., I just had to lift my dress up all the way. But no gowns. I’ve heard that there may be gowns given for birth, but I’ve also heard that you need to bring your own stuff. But I haven’t had that experience.

It definitely takes getting used to.

Funny story. SO and I went away to a spa hotel and we spent a few hours in the spa in the sauna and pool, etc. At one point we were in a sauna and met another couple there (they were British) and started talking to them. They must have thought we were crazy because we sat there naked and they were in swimsuits. But the sign said no suits. I still wonder what they think of us...

It was very liberating though.

Re: Lump in breast Update

Update 2: I had the mammo and it didn’t really hurt. A bit uncomfortable, but that was it. After the mammo, I had a sonogram of my boobs. Then I had to have another mammo done to check one spot. The doctor was a bit concerned about one part and said I should get a biopsy. She doesn’t think it’s cancer, but it’s best that I get it fully checked out.

Thank you for the update. Sounds like you are getting appropriate care and it will probably be nothing. Good Luck.

Re: Lump in breast Update

That’s a good update. For what your doctor said, it seems it’s nothings serious and I hope that's the case. Best of luck and let us know any updates. Btw, the more mammograms I have, the less uncomfortable I find them. Last week I had my 4th one and I see them as a routine procedure now.

Re: Lump in breast Update Update number 3

Update number 3:

I had the biopsy and the results said benign, but they want to check again in 6 months. They also want to put a chip in there. Is this normal? I’ve been home for two days and it hurts. Tomorrow is a holiday (Corpus Christi) , so I can just relax. I never knew how much biopsies could hurt.

But anyway, a short update.

The chip is put in as a marker, to indicate that they've already examined that lymph node because they can move around a little bit.

Totally normal to put in the marker and to check again in 6 months. They might keep you on a 6 month schedule for a while (year - couple of years). Better safe than sorry.

I was sore for a few days after my biopsies, but nothing too crazy. Glad the results were all good!

So I have had a bit of pain in one breast (I thought it was from sex). I did my monthly check. I felt a small lump. I have booked an appointment at my doctor for Friday.

What should I ask the doctor to check for? What further tests do I have to do?

Background: GYN checked me out 6 months ago. My period ended the other day.

Please help me to remain calm because doctor Google doesn’t help.

Update: it went well. The doctor thought it wasn‘t anything to worry about, but she scheduled a mammo for me. At least I‘ll get that out of the way.

Tell me do they hurt?

Update 2: I had the mammo and it didn’t really hurt. A bit uncomfortable, but that was it. After the mammo, I had a sonogram of my boobs. Then I had to have another mammo done to check one spot. The doctor was a bit concerned about one part and said I should get a biopsy. She doesn’t think it’s cancer, but it’s best that I get it fully checked out.

Glad you got a benign result!

Years ago I went through nearly the same process; I have the clips in one breast. I'm not really excited about them being there but its done. It's so they can monitor that area going forward. But they put the clip in when they do the biopsy so are they going back in?

I've had 2 biopsies, the first really hurt and I was crying; the second was fine. 2 different facilites, 2 different practitioners.

I have dense breasts so apparently this is common.

Sounds like the process you are going through is the thorough and correct one, so the up side is you're getting good careChat Icon
