Anyone travelled to Europe with kids???

I’m seriously considering a first European vacation this summer... but we have 3 kids ages will be 4, 7 & 9 years old.

I’m thinking London vs Rome vs Ireland. Anyone with any experience traveling with kids to those places?

We went on a tour of Italy last August. It was great. I would recommend NOT trying to see every museum and church. We did the tours in the mornings and kept the afternoons for some relaxing.

We took our kids ages 7 & 9 to Ireland last summer. It was an amazing trip! I planned/booked everything myself and loosely followed the Disney Adventures itinerary.

Let me know if you want more specifics on what we did.

We also did Paris as a long weekend this fall. My kids are great travelers and I would have no hesitation to do future Europe trips.

We have done Ireland several times just recently with our 9,8,4 and 2 year old.
Just remember you know your kids the best and don't overly plan. Let them have some down time you don't always need to be on the go. I realized that is what works best for us.

We booked London for next Summer. Just so you know, rooms that accommodate families are very limited and very expensive there. Most have an occupancy of 2. I'm also looking at Adventures by Disney's itineraries to schedule ours! We plan to also take the train to Paris for a few nights after London and go to Disneyland there. I will admit, I go back and forth on whether or not I want to actually do this trip though. It seems like a lot with the time change, traveling, and sightseeing that may or may not bore my kids to death.

Do people in Europe not travel on vacation with their kids? What do they do?

That's what I said when I was looking for hotels. The "family" rooms (i.e. a basic room with 2 beds) are also a significant upcharge.

We went to Italy 2 summers ago. We did several days in Rome followed by Amalfi coast. I took my older 2 (ages 11 and 10) and left my 4 and 5yos at home. We went with my sister and teenage niece. It was fun but HOT. It totally depends on your family but I know my kids and it would have been too much for the little ones. Even the older ones could only handle a couple of hours touring before they wanted to go back to the hotel pool. We are now planning a trip to Ireland this June with everyone (youngest will be 6) but it will be at a much slower pace. We will be staying with family and friends and staying for 2 weeks so kids aren’t worn out by traveling and we can relax.

And yes, you will probably need 2 rooms. Most hotel rooms are only for 2-3 people. Or consider Airbnb.

Interesting. Not sure I'd like that with young kids. I guess you have to split the adults up too

Europe is very child friendly. You can get extra beds in rooms. They will charge extra for kids.

Rooms can be small. Most people in Europe will just sleep in a bed with kids.

I would just do an AirBnB.

Yes! This is driving me crazy. I have 3 kids (one could be in a crib) but finally found that hotel chains associated with Marriott in London have rooms that will take 3 kids. The rooms are $$$. I actually emailed a bunch of places with little one and two bedroom apartments that said 4 max!

Where did PP stay in Ireland? I’ve been with DH and had a great time but 10 years ago. I think they are so kid friendly there.

DH is pushing for 1 more Carribean vacay before we start Europe so that our little one can be sure to be out of her crappy stage (so this may be summer 2020).

I booked the Marriott London County Hall near Big Ben and on the river....they do have Family rooms with 2 beds. We have points so a room for 2 is free, but a room for a family was an upgrade charge. Which I really can't complain about since we are saving thousands using points. But, it's just weird they have so few hotels with family rooms. I went through a lot of Marriott hotels to find this one!

Re: Anyone travelled to Europe with kids???

You know your family... I would just put into booking as 1 child. For us we are able to fit in a King size bed as family of 4 if needed or two double beds.

I don't suggest doing this in Europe. From what I have read on the Tripadvisor Europe forums, they are generally very strict on occupancy in rooms in many hotels in Europe. Also, many hotels are just double beds, not US king size beds. There are definitely hotels with family rooms. I know the hotel we stayed in London had a few family rooms in it. I found a lot of good information on the Tripadvisor Europe forums when we travelled this past summer.

2 double beds are the "family rooms". It's what we call a standard room here, not a suite, etc.

I personally have no desire to share a bed with my kids when I go away. It's bad enough sharing with one kid sometimes, but two, no thanks Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Anyone travelled to Europe with kids???

Many times in the hotels you can ask for an extra cot or single bed for a kid - we have found a few family hotel rooms in Ireland - last summer we stayed in Cobh in Cork and our family of 6 fit in one hotel room - the baby was in a pack n play though

Maybe I'm spoiled but I have no desire to go to Europe if the accomdations are like this. Do they not have luxury hotels akin to the US?
And if not, why not?

We went to Italy (Rome, lake como, Milan, Florence, and Venice) with 3 kids. They were 8,6, and 7 months at the time. The food was amazing and they had the best time. It is their favorite trip and they want to go back. The rooms are hard Bc they only accommodate 4. No diaper changing areas and no high chairs. I want to go back but the youngest is 2.5 and just too difficult. I think when he is 4, we will go . It’s an amazing country and the kids LOVED the fast trains and traveling around the country. We went end of sept early oct and the weather was just perfect

They are very strict. 2 of the hotels made a big deal Bc we didn’t mention the baby. One hotel was going to charge us extra bt we made a stink about it. He was 7 months and they wanted to charge 25.00 a night for him

My daughter has been to Madrid, Amsterdam, and Paris by 10 months old. Every age is different, obviously.. it might be easier when kids are older because you don’t have to carry so much sh!t lol
