Kids named after relatives?

Since there are only 6 options, it's hard to get all of the combinations. But, since this poll doesn't actually matter, I guess that's OK... Chat Icon

Just wondering if any of your DC are named after relatives, whether it be yourself, SO, favorite uncle, great-great grandmother, etc.

I would use the option that is closest to yourself.

This is for the first name of DC.

DS's middle name is my first name, but for first names, we actively tried to avoid naming DC after anyone in the family.

Kids named after relatives?

My son is named after my sister that passed away before he was born. Her name was Elizabeth and his name is Eli. Closest I could get.

Re: Kids named after relatives?

I am not a fan of the kids having the same name as the parent- to me that causes confusion.
To this day, DH gets stuff for his dad (he's a junior) and even had dental appts mixed up, insurance billed for the wrong person etc.

So that was the only thing we avoided.

My DD's first name is her own but we did give her the same middle name as my DH's mom, who passed away before she was born. (not his mom's first name, her middle name)

Re: Kids named after relatives?

All middle names are after a relative - all 1st names are just names we liked and did not want to repeat relatives name with the exception of ds#3 who has the same name as my cousin, but we just liked the name

My DD’s middle name is my maiden name. Her first name is a name we liked.

I don’t like the idea of naming a child after a parent. I never would have agreed to name a son after DH (not that he would have wanted that, anyway).

Re: Kids named after relatives?

Yes, my DS is named after FIL and my DD is named after my MIL. If we have a 3rd it would be named after my parents. We are italian and this is a strong tradition we uphold in our family. My brother just had a baby and it is named after my father.

Re: Kids named after relatives?

My DS is named after my DH but we don't call him the full name. Less confusion that way.

My DD's middle name is my mom's name. I didn't want her first name to be my mom's name because I thought it would be too painful for me.

My Stepson is named after my DH. I remember being so happy he got that out of his system.Chat Icon

My son and stepson have the middle name Joseph for my DH's maternal grandfather who raised him. All the cousins have that as their middle name. If I had a son I would have given him that middle name as well.

Kids named after relatives?

im not a super big fan of kids having the same first names as a parent... definitely gets confusing! for our boys- my older son has a first name we just liked, and then his middle name is my dad's name (and my granddads name, and great granddads name.... LOL )
THEN for DS #2... his first name is my father in laws middle name. it was a name i always like anyway... so it just worked out great that we could use it and honor FIL a little bit. THEN my mom remembered that its ALSO her grandmas maiden name HAHA so we got both sides in there a little bit Chat Icon DS#2 middle name is after DH's grandpa...

Re: Kids named after relatives?

Most of my kids have some sort of family names...my daughter #1 has my mother and dh's grandmother, daughter #2 had my grandmother's middle name, daughter #4 will have my other grandmother's name as a first name. I wanted to honor those people who were important in my life.

Re: Kids named after relatives?

I avodied for several reason because I knew we would not have enough kids to honor not our parents, I had no desire for my children's names be most of our parents names. I am not a fan of jrs, II, etc

I will say I loved then name allie for a girl and refused to use it because his moms name is alison and I refused to let her think I named my DD after her.

My DS middle name is my brothers name who passed away

Re: Kids named after relatives?

I named my DD Gianna, not realizing it's the Italian feminine form of John, which is my brothers name. He thinks we named her after him, and I haven't corrected him. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Kids named after relatives?

My 3 kids all have first names that are not family names, but their middle names are all family names. Same with my grandchildren. I do have a niece named after me, she is my Goddaughter.

Re: Kids named after relatives?

in DHs family, you are not supposed to name kids after living relatives. (why i could not name DS Michael)
you CAN name after a deceased relative or pick a name with the same first letter. We went with the letter after DHs grandfather.

Yes after my FIL and I wish we hadn't. Any future kids we have will have their own name not related to anybody

Yes, this is a Jewish custom. My BIL and SIL have done this with their kids. On the flip side, DD's name starts with the same letter as both FIL and DH. The 3 of them actually all have the same initials, which we didn't even do on purpose. We agreed on literally one name and always knew that the middle name would be my maiden name so that was that.

All three of my kids' middle names are after their grandparents/great grandparents.

Their first names are unique/not named after any family member.

No. I hate when kids are named after parent or relative and we purposely did not pick a middle name for her.

No, I want my kids to have their own names. We do, however, give them middle names. My DD has my middle name which is also my mother's name. DC who is currently cooking will have my DH's middle name which is also my FIL's name, if it's a boy of course. If it's a girl, she'll have my MIL's name as a middle name.

Re: Kids named after relatives?

We are a mix of one and two degrees away.
My DS is my husbands name as his first and my dads as his middle. He is the 5th first son of a first son on my husbands side, all who have had the same first name. However, no Jr, I, II, III bc they all have different middle names.

My daughter's first name is just bc we loved it, but her middle name is my SILs first name.
