Thumb Sucking and Dental Appliance
My DD is almost 7 and still sucks her thumb. She has struggled with this for years and although she has stopped for months at a time she always ends up going back to it. Its now starting to impact the development of her mouth so I am considering getting a dental appliance made for her to prohibit her from thumb sucking.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Did it work? What was the approximate cost? How did your child feel about it?

I know this is going back but I wore one. it was called a "rake".
I spoke with a lisp for a bit but then eventually adjusted to it.
It worked.
The aftermath of finger ( no thumb for me) sucking. whoa. I was a bottle opener!

DS sucked his thumb.
luckily, he gave it up gradually and never needed any appliance.
i'm posting to wish you luck and send some "stop thumb sucking" vibes to your daughter. i remember how stressed i was trying to get him to stop.

You have described my son exactly. Just turned 7 and still sucks his thumb. We have tried EVERYTHING to get him to stop. I know about the appliance bc a neighbor had her son do it, but we all thought the woman was crazy so I guess I remember her being so mean that I can't do that to him. Nothing to do with the thing in his mouth, but overall she was a crazy, mean mom we were all afraid of on the block.
If it works let me know though! It is so hard and he says he can't stop. He's addicted. Ugh!

Do you remember how long you had to wear it? Did kids tease you about it?
Im glad braces worked.. im afraid its beyond my daughters teeth at this point and really effecting her jaw structure- not sure if braces can help fix that.

Her sucking so loud it sometimes wakes me up in the middle of the night! I can hear it down the hall from her bedroom.
I tried the thumbguard-- which worked great for my younger daughter but no chance with the older one--- i tried it so many times and no luck.. Tried reward system.. nope. Bitter nail polish-- she just asked for more. Gum, chewelry etc-- nothing as good as the thumb i guess.
I havent tried hotsauce yet lol but i feel like thats really cruel- though maybe better than an appliance.
I tried threatening her with videos of what teeth look like after alot of thumb sucking-- videos of what the mouthpiece would look like with the hope that it would motivate her to quit-- but nothing works. And i feel like I have to do SOMETHING so i have an appt with the ped dentist in 2 weeks.

She is doing it for comfort. Can you offer something in lieu of the thumb for comfort instead? A blanket or something like that?

I feel you. My son is 6 and still sucks his thumb (usually when he holds his favorite blanket) and it's like a source of comfort for him.. I think it soothes him... so far his teeth are still OK but I'm worried he may do real damage.

exactly its totally a habit now. MAybe I will make her a deal if i stop my habit of eating all of the snacks that i buy for "her" after she goes to bed.. she stops sucking her thumb?

Dentist told my friend to put a sock on her son' hand at night. Some mornings he woke up with it off. Other nights he left it on. Eventually he grew out of it.
If it were me... (sorry to be the mean mom) I would try the hot sauce... if it really is effecting her jaw. :(

its def effecting her pallet. I am thinking of it as a last resort before the appliance. 
Ive tried socks.. it didnt work well but ill try again- she does it all day long too though

We have tried everything. She’s 5. Her dentist told her she’s getting the guard in at either 7 or 8 if she doesn’t stop. I have a feeling we will be getting it sooner than later.

I was young...like 2nd grade. I don't remember much. Was more my speech that was affected but I survived. I don't believe it was long, 6 mths tops. it was to make sure that finger went back in!
She will need a palette expander and those are VERY common. (daughter had one). I never got one since again, back then *cough 34yrs ago, those were even offered.
