Real Estate “portal”

We are considering a move out of state and have recently reached out to a few real estate agents in the area with some basic questions about listings they represented. 2 have asked me if they can send me email and set me up on the MLS portal. I don’t want to be unfair to either but we aren’t quite ready to seriously look, we’re still browsing many different areas. If I sign up with one of them, and the other then tried to set me up on the portal, would they know? I guess my question is this portal that everyone talks about universal? Or can I set up portal with both of them?

I don't know if they would know, but if you're looking in more than one geographic area I'm sure they'd appreciate you being honest with them about that. And I doubt they'd fault you for it, if they don't cover or aren't as familiar with the other areas.

Getting listings from them via email is fine. Signing a contract with multiple agents is an issue.

Agents need to pay for access to MLS portals, which are specific to a particular region. For example, I cannot use the same agent to sell my house on LI and buy a house in westchester unless they have access to both portals (which our agents do not).

If you explain that you have not yet narrowed down the area I can’t imagjne them having an issue.

It's fine. It's just setting you up on a prospect match system on MLS.

Every MLS may have different technological capabilities, but on the MLS for Long Island, we do not know if "a prospect" is receiving listings from another agent.

As a PP said, you just don't want to sign an "exclusive right to represent" contract with anyone until you have made your decision.

Sounds like you were open with them that you are still exploring options, and it doesn't take very much for them to set you up to receive listings via email, so I wouldn't worry.

You may want to set up a specific email just for your house hunting/realtor communications, though. So you don't get bombarded/overwhelmed.

You can get info from multiple agents. When you meet them in person, that’s when they will want you to sign with them. The only reason why I may look at 2 different agents would only be if one specialized in one area that the other doesn’t really have info on. We moved OOS a month ago (to N.C.). We pretty much did everything from up north. PM me if you have any questions.
