Moving with pets soon = stressful!

We are moving out of state this weekend. We will be traveling with our pets... one of my dogs is a great traveler, and the other one gets some anxiety (panting, pacing, etc). They will be in crates for the duration, but was wondering if anyone has used natural calming agents? Was considering one (or all lol) of the following:

* Thunder shirt
* Bachs Flower Rescue Remedy
* Adaptil/ComfortZone collar
* CBD oil/treats

Has anyone had luck with any of these? Or can think of something else that might be helpful? It's a long drive, and I just want everyone to be as relaxed as possible.

Might need to try all of these on my kids, too... or maybe I should just load up on all of it myself and just let everyone--kids, dogs, cat, turtle--fight it out in the back seat while I drive along in a state of happy. Chat Icon

No answers to your actual question, but wanted to share that I moved OOS with a dog a two cats in the car. My DH moved a few weeks earlier due to his new job so it was just me and the menagerie Chat Icon it wasn’t particular easy but we all survived. The hardest part was getting the cats into their crates! My dog loves the car though so that helped!

Thundershirt works. Used it many times.

I drove with my dog from FL to NY. I gave her 1/2 a tranq pill (from the vet) for the car ride to keep her calm even though she likes the car. Worked great.

I recently got an Adaptil collar for my dog (anxiety issues) and it hasn't really made a difference. He's had it on for almost 1 month. I did order another one which I will put on him when the 30 days of the fist one is up to see give it one more try. I also just ordered CBD oil, but haven't received it yet, so I can't give you any insight on that - but I've heard (read) good things

Moving with pets soon = stressful!

I used one of the pheromone collars and it made it worse.

Thanks... I've heard lots of mixed reviews on the Adaptil collar, so I think I'll save my money on that lol.

Can you share what CBD you purchased for your pet? I tried to do a bit of research and it looks like CBD is safe for pets, so this is an interesting option. Hmmmm... maybe I should look into whether it's safe for cats, too... The cat is NOT going to be happy about this, either!

Thanks! Definitely going to pick up a Thundershirt to try! Trying to avoid any kind of medication since the panicky one is an older girl and she's never had any kind of medication like that... My vet is concerned that we'll be on our way, only to find out she has a reaction to the medication (or that it has the opposite effect and makes her even crazier!) Sigh. Looking back, I probably should have spoken with the vet sooner so I could do a trial run and see how she tolerated it. Moving is really overwhelming!

Ugh... this is good to know. I will definitely skip trying this product for the drive!

Gotcha. Yea def don't give any now if they've never had it before.
Have you looked into essential oils? Some are safe for pets. I know someone who puts some on her dog for calming (during a storm). Not sure which one though.

Re: Moving with pets soon = stressful!

I moved with 2 cats twice. Once from Australia, and then to another city in a car. Obviously, I didn’t drive from Australia. I didn’t give them any medication either because you do not know it will work with them at high altitudes. However, I do think it could be OK in a car.

Rescue remedy only works on certain animals I’ve learned. It works on one of my cats, but not the others. I would not do essential oils because they can be harmful to pets. When I got my last cat, he was very anxious. I got prescribed Zylkène and that worked very well. You just spread it out on the food. You have to start this a few weeks before you leave.

Oh and tons of wee-wee pads. One of my other cats is so anxious in a car. He literally poops like every hour in a car. So I just stick with the wee wee pads, and change them at rest stops if I need to.

Is your dog used to the car?
