holiday boutiques
Does your school or PTA sponsor one of these? Trying to decide if it is something our school should pursue. I'm thinking its not worth it, but would appreciate any insight you might have.

It is a nice thing to do and of educational value.
Children on the elementary level realize the value of money and get the "shopping" experience. Just don't try and sell a gumball machine toy valued at .50 cents for $4.00. I understand it is a fundraiser but should not be a price gouge.

My son's elem school does it every year in Dec. Whether it is a big hit I'm not sure - I do know they continue to do it so I would say yes. Most of it is crap, but the kids have fun buying their own things for parents, grandparents, friends...and themselves. 
I will say my son purchased this beautiful plastic ring for me this past Christmas. I actually wear it and get compliments on it all the time. It's actually hilarious because they think I'm wearing this $$$$ ring and it's peeling and adjustable.

Yes they do it for the December holidays and for Mother's Day.
Maybe Father's Day too come to think of it.
I think it's cute and DD gets super excited to shop on her own for us.

This. Our school does NOT do it as a fundraiser, so kids are paying pretty much cost on everything. It keeps the prices down. It’s a good learning experience for them, and they love “shopping” for their family. Keep in mind that the little ones will need a lot of help. Even with parent volunteers, it’s a good idea to have an older-grade “buddy” to help the K-1st graders shop.

It's a lot of overpriced crap IMO. I've worked it many years. Kids bring $10 and have a list of 30 people to buy for. The little kids need 1:1 help with it, so you need a lot of volunteers!

Yes, our school does one in December and then another in May for Mother’s day/Father’s day. My DD loves it. She uses money from her piggy bank to pay for the people on her list. Most of the items are only around $1 or $2.

I hate it because my kids spend a fortune on crummy stuff. A school I used to work purchased in bulk from the dollar tree so everything was $1. That I liked. $5 got 5 people gifts instead of $20 for 3 gifts.

My kids school has one every December. I usually work it and it’s a huge hit, the kids are always so excited to find gifts for all their family members. I find our schools is set up very well, they have 6 tables, and each table has a price point. This way the kids who have to buy for 10 people and have $10, they know to stick to the $1 table etc.

We do holiday and fathers day. I am running the father's day one. For mothers day its a plant sale
There are different tiers where you can choose how much an items cost. No idea how much money they make off of it.
The stuff I saw while could be construed as crap it really isn't horrible quality. We try to choose things that are kind of useful and the kids seem to enjoy picking out things for their parents.

Yes DD did well for Mother's Day. Got me some beach themed coasters that I actually use.
Got my mom a cell phone case.
She's getting better at this as she gets older

It's the worst event to volunteer for IMHO. Plus it's the same crap year in and year out.

My son's elementary school has a Holiday Boutique in December, run by the PTA. I've actually run the event for the past couple of years.
It's very popular - the kids like it and I think the parents don't mind. We use Little Treasures in Lindenhurst as the vendor. They have a showroom where you can go pick out the items for your boutique and they are very helpful. They get new items every year, and we try to keep it fresh and include nicer things (not just tchotchkes and really junky items). They really do have a pretty nice selection.
We sort the merchandise by category and we have things for Moms/Grandmas/Aunts/Sisters, Dads/Grandpas/Uncles/Brothers, Kids Stuff/Toys, Jewelry, Holiday Items (ornaments, etc.), Sports (team items - MLB, NFL, etc.), Pets, Baby, Teacher gifts.
The kids look forward to shopping and the PTA also makes a decent profit on it as a fundraiser, so it's a win/win.
The items usually range in price from $1 (we do have a few 50 cent items, such as pencils) up to about $14 (for some of the sports stuff... more expensive with licensing). Most of the stuff is in the $3-$6 range.
Another alternative is a vendor night for a holiday PTA event. A lot of other local schools do that, where vendors (craft/Etsy type sellers, as well as direct sales people) pay for a table for an evening event, and then parents come in and shop at night.

My kid brings home the most well thought out gifts from the boutiques. It blows me away. And it teaches them to think about others and how to spend $ wisely. She’s always super excited to give her gifts too. It’s adorable!!

My dds school does it and she really felt proud of herself for picking out her Xmas gifts for her family. What i really liked is her school invites the parents to come during their child's designated shopping time to help them choose their purchases, and they also have the sale going on a Friday evening as well for those who work during the day. It really helped us to make sure dd didnt just come home with a bunch of junk or just stuff for herself. I went with her class to help her pick for her dad and brother, and dh went in the evening to help her pick for me.
