Tipping question (sorry!)

So I closed on my new house yesterday (yay!) and have a flooring company here doing work. The owner and one other guy were here this morning to rip out the old carpet. Then there’s another crew to do the sanding and staining. And then there will be other guys to install laminate flooring in other rooms. They are all from the same company, but I’m not sure who will be here on which days. It’s a lot of work and there are a lot of different guys. I know there’s a main guy I charge of the sanding and staining, but he has a bunch of people working with him. Not sure yet who or how many will install the laminate floor. So, how do I tip them and how much? Do I just give the owner an amount to split among all the guys?

Thanks!

Not the popular response, but IMO you're already paying for the service, with all that it entails included (removing stuff, putting down new stuff etc). So, why do you feel you need to/should pay more?

If something additional popped up and they took care of it without charging you extra, or if it was done under extreme circumstances like 100 degree weather or something.. then tipping would be nice. But i don't get why people feel the need to pay more than you already are

sorry! not the answer you're looking for

I get what you are saying and I know a lot of people feel the same as you, but I do want to tip them. Just not sure how much or how to do it

I don't think I'd tip the owner. It's his business he is making the profit.
How many workers are there?

Re: Tipping question (sorry!)

I wouldn't tip. Most especially if there are so many different guys.

They would probably be more appreciative of bottled water, variety of chips (the small bags), or even pizza.

I had guys working at my house a few weeks ago. One morning I supplied them bagels, muffins, etc.

One day for lunch I ordered them pizza; another time I went to the deli (there were only two guys at that point).

And I usually always asked if they wanted coffee. I would usually make a pot for them.

Not saying you should do this. Its just an example.

I want to tip the other guys, not the owner, but so far today there have been about 6-7 guys here, aside from the owner. Not sure which of them will be back the rest of the days. I was thinking I could just give tip money to the owner to divide among all the guys

We had so much work done that we couldn’t tip everyone. We offered drinks and pizza everyday. We did give a few cash but with a crew of 7-8 guys it gets expensive and it’s not necessary in my opinion.

this is tough because there are so many and for several days.
I usually tip if someone comes to deliver or install something but that's like a one shot deal and usually only 1-2 guys.
Ugh it can get expensive!

Today they all brought their own lunches - so I am guessing that's what they do everyday, and I told them there are bottles of water in the refrigerator. And I don't know what time they are coming tomorrow. Ugh! This is almost harder than actually finding a contractor! Chat Icon

this is so interesting feeding people who are being paid to do a job. I dont understand why so many people feel the need to feed workers. I dont get fed everyday at my job and I work just as hard..

I agree with the others, no need to tip. However, if that's what you want to do I would give to each individual worker. How can you be certain that if money is given to the owner that he will disperse? In addition, the workers are probably subs that owner doesn't see on a regular basis.

Amount? $20 is too high, $5 too low so $10 each?

Re: Tipping question (sorry!)

I'd provide snacks and drinks. Coffee, Gatorade, and water. Single serve snacks because even if they don't want it at that minute, they will usually take a few for later. I dated a contractor. They were always stopping at 7-11 for things like coffee, mini muffins, and chips/popcorn bags. So I think that would be a nice treat for them.

I wouldn't give the owner the tip, there's a chance it won't even make it to the guys.

It's not really a "need"; but its something I "want" to do. Reason being is they're doing manual; tedious labor, working non-stop. They also didn't leave my house to take a lunch. They just worked thru the day. So I wanted to do something for them.

I don't have a "manual labor" job; so just because my employer does not do this for me; is no reason for me not to want to do this for them.

They are so appreciative; it makes it even more worthwhile.

I wouldn't tip them - you contracted them to do a service. If someone goes up and beyond, then I would give one something - but otherwise nothing. I would provide water to them, but if they skip lunch - they are doing it because they want to get done quickly not because someone is making them

DH works for a flooring company and the guys rarely get tips. Usually there's about 2 or 3 guys doing the job (they usually send the same guys if possible to do the ripping, installing, and sealing). I'd offer to buy lunch or something if you're around. Even that or a coffee or $5 is appreciated. Nothing is expected.

ETA: Definitely don't tip the owner.

I would just order some pizzas and call it a day. I don't think there is a need to tip them all.

Thanks for this info. There were a bunch of guys in and out on the first day (probably 6-7 different guys) and then only one guy on the following days - and just to put down the coat of poly which only took a few minutes. Since I didn't tip any of the guys on the first day, (mostly because it was so chaotic and I don't even know who was there for how long), I wound up not tipping anyone. Makes me feel better to know that tipping is not too common

Tipping question (sorry!)

I am a tipper. If it is 1 or 2 guys I will give them each a tip, amount depending on what they were doing. If a crew was in my house there is usually a foreman or lead worker overseeing or the one in charge of paperwork and I give him the money to split with the crew. In your case, if there is no one person with the guys every day, I'd tip each one individually. I also wouldn't give it to the owner because who knows if he is giving to the workers. I have never ordered food for them. They are getting paid for a service and can supply their own food. I do always have waters out for them though.

Re: Tipping question (sorry!)

I’ve never tipped anyone working on my house/apartment.

They get paid a full wage. Have some food and drinks ready, and that’s it.
