Cary, NC - Raleigh, NC
DH and I have started talking about relocating to this area of NC. We have both lived in Charlotte when we were teenagers. But I know nothing about this area.
Does anyone know anything about the schools and industry in this area?

It is known as the Containment Area of Relocated Yankees

Seems like a lot of people like those specific cities, but I actually prefer Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro (I lived in Durham before moving to LI and now I live in Chapel Hill). Chapel Hill has some of the best schools in the state. A lot of people like Wake Forest, but they do a lot of gerrymandering and the lines change all the time.
Not sure about the industry question. It's great for higher ed (UNC, Duke, and NC State are the biggest ones, but there are a lot of smaller colleges). There are also a lot of tech companies here (including on the list for possible locations for Amazon).
I was so happy to move back after being on LI for 3 years. The roads are wider (although traffic around Cary and Raleigh is getting worse) and I really missed sweet tea and good Southern veggie plates. :)

The job my DH is looking into is in Cary so we are open to all surrounding areas. I just want to make sure we pick a place with great schools.
First, we would rent and then buy. But I want to rent in the same district we would purchase because I do not want my DD to have to move schools.
Do you have any suggestions on great Elementary schools that also feed into really great middle and high schools?

I have family and friends in Morrisville & Holly Springs. They all love it down there (some are former LIers). From what i've seen, the whole area is really nice.
All of their kids go to year round school. They all have no problem with it, especially having different times off than most schools. They still do get plenty of time off in the summer and during Xmas.
I'm actually contemplating moving down there.

Yes.
You do have the option to go to a regular 10 month school.

Only certain areas have year round schools (yes, they're public). Durham and Chapel Hill are typical (Sept - June). I'd actually like to try a year round school since the breaks are different and you can take vacations during different times (alternative to the crowds).
I don't have recommendations for schools b/c I only know the ones for my area (Durham isn't so great, but Chapel Hill has the best in the state). I think Cary, Apex, Raleigh are all about the same, but I'm sure some are better than others.

Excellent idea to rent first. We sold our LI home in August and have been in Raleigh ever since. Rents are lower here, dog friendly rentals are easy to come by too.
I'm afraid I don't know about the schools since we don't have children but Cary is very popular as is Apex, Holly Springs, Raleigh, North Raleigh and parts of Garner.
I'd really recommend you come down and get a feel for the area. Cary has a lot of growth and also a lot of zero-lot-line homes if that's what you're looking for. You pay more in Cary and Apex than elsewhere because of the proximity to the Research Triangle Park which is a big hub for jobs. LI has the rush hour going west in the AM and east in the PM, and it's the same thing here.
Make sure one of you has a job to support you both before you get here though. Good luck and let me know if I can answer any questions for you.
