I think my son has lice. He complained of his head itching and although i didn’t see anything “live” Chat Icon Chat Icon i think he has nits. I’m so grossed out Chat Icon There’s no harm in treating it as if it is lice right?? And what about myself?? i pretty much want to shave my head and burn everything to the ground.

If you lived through this please tell me it’ll end soon Chat Icon

Re: Lice?

Go to walgreens or CVS and buy licefree spray. It comes with a comb. Follow the directions and see if you find anything.

It passes but the anxiety can linger. Most people go through it at least once and you will survive.

If you catch it right away its super easy to get rid of

Just reading this makes me itch, lol.
We haven't been through it yet, but I have heard of a place you go to that treats it naturally. I would probably try that. But, I would first get one of the special combs and check him.

I am a teacher. I find it my mission to find them if I see a kid scratching all day. That said, look at the warmest place at on the scalp— back of the neck area or near the ear. Also, pick up a nit comb. You’ll know it’s a nit if it doesn’t fall off easily. Good luck!

Fairy lice mothers will check him for $25 if you're not sure. I hear most lice now a days are resistant to the drug store solutions so could be worth bringing him in.

My DD got it last year in kindergarten (it went around a few of the classrooms). I took her to De-Liceful and they cleaned her up really well. It was expensive but she was clean all in one shot and the price included a weekly re-check.

I just read that lice generally cannot survive longer than 24 hours off the host.

Where do you live? I know people who have been very happy using Deliceful, and other posters have recommended Fairy Lice Mothers. They will check your heads first for a small fee to determine if you actually need their services. Don't wait!

Re: Lice?

OMG lice was my biggest fear!! BIGGEST! I wrap my daughter's hair up tight in buns, every single day since Kindergarten. I remember the aide at the front desk at school telling me that they don't get lice in their school. I tried not to laugh! Every school gets lice! Sure enough, 2 months in, there was a HUGE outbreak, and they had to bring in Deliceful to check heads! So many students AND teachers had it!! We came away unscathed lol.

Fast forward to 3rd grade. I was working picture day. A mom is fixing the girls hair. She finds TONS of lice in a girls hair who is in our class. I'm thinking oh shiit, the ONE day my daughter wears her hair down, we are doomed. Again, unscathed, whew! Then a couple of days later, I get a call from her friend's mom....her whole family has lice. $750 later they are at Deliceful. My DD was hanging with her at her house earlier in the day, so I was freaking. So I had the nitpicker metal comb thing just in case (it's like $20, not that thing that comes with lice kits). Sure enough I found a nit! Would've never seen it if I didn't have the comb!! I put it in between two pieces of tape to show Deliceful. I found a couple more that night. I sprayed her head with this spray called "Licefree" from Walgreens, it's supposed to kill lice and nits (don't know about the nits). Next morning, we went to Deliceful. They found like 2 more nits, no live lice though. Cost me $250, but best money spent for peace of mind! I must have caught it literally the day she got it!

Long story I know LOL. But, all my friends know how much I freaked out about lice, and then it turned out to not be THAT bad! I threw all the stuffed animals and pillows in the dryer, and washed her sheets, etc. on hot. I vacuumed the car, and lint rolled it as well.

I also had them check my head, because I was convinced I had it! I didn't...and it was only $25 for peace of mind!! My DD has SUPER thick hair, so there is no way I would've been able to pick through it myself, and come away sane!

I took my oldest to fairly lice mothers. It was $25 (or $20 can’t remember) but so worth the piece of mind. They do a check and then a double check. And my dd loved the way she braided her hair at the endChat Icon

Re: Lice?

My kids both had lice twice. There are places that will check you out and go strand by strand to get nits. For the house you need to:

-boil your hair brushes or freeze them for 24 hours
-vacuum all rugs
-place sheets over all of your furniture for 24 hours and then vacuum them
-wash all sheets/towels/comforters/pillows
-wash all stuffed animals
-wash any coats/hats

you can also put most of these in the dryer, high heat for 45 min.

It's a pain, but it will pass

So its $25 to check the head but $250 if they remove lice?

When kids have it, are they itchy?
I assume so but your daughter wasn't scratching?

Different locations have different prices for the check, and also the cost to remove varies by length of hair, I believe.

Lice makes your head itchy, but it sounds like her daughter was in the early stage before they hatched and multiplied.

Re: Lice?

I know it's late, but I wouldn't ever treat lice with a chemical treatment unless you are totally sure. I didn't use a chemical treatment when my girls got lice...I used tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner and a good old nit comb. I'm super OCD about those things and was able to clear their heads in two sittings. I dried backpacks, coats, bedding, etc on high each day for a while just to catch any live ones that might be still around or coming home from school. Now we do the shampoo once or twice a week and a leave in spray each day.

How fast do the lice move?

Like when you're examining your child's hair is it possible for the lice to run away and jump onto you? or go onto their shirts and get away?
