Health Insurance NYC
NYC Teachers-Which health insurance do you have? I have the one with no premium. It's great not having any money deducted from your paycheck but now I'm wondering what is the best plan to have with a family. What is the maximum that is covered every year? What happens if an emergency surgery is necessary? Thank you!

From my understanding, the only reason to have a plan where you pay every month would be if one of your family members had a medical condition where they needed to see a specialist quite often.
We have the basic GHI program with 2 kids. I don't think there's a maximum amount and (knock on wood) haven't had any emergency surgeries so I can't speak to that. One big benefit of being a part of the DOE is definitely our medical coverage!

I have GHI (the free one) and added a rider onto it which is like $6/month or something... I have never had any problems with the health insurance whatsoever. I actually paid for my insurance when I was on LI for a half a year, and that was like $350/month. IMO, that insurance was way worse than GHI was.

No longer with DOE but we had the no premium GHI (except the optional rider which was like $7.00 a month) with 4 kids and it was great. no issues at all.
