Chiropractor or Orthopedist?
I've been waking up with severe back pain for the last 2 weeks or so. I'm perfectly fine during the day but when I lay down for any period of time, I wake up in pain. I'm having terrible nights sleeping. Once I wake up, take a hot shower and start moving again, I'm ok again. It's so weird!
Anyway, I've heard about a fantastic chiropractor but the idea of getting adjusted freaks me out. Would an orthopedist be a better place to go? Thoughts or experiences?

Chiropractor or Orthopedist?
I had this about a year ago...same as you, only happened laying down! I assumed it was a pinched nerve, and after about 3-4 weeks it went away and hasn’t returned.

Chiropractor or Orthopedist?
I would go to a chiropractor first. They specialize in back pain and can refer you to an orthopedist if needed.

My chiro fixed that for me in 2 visits! Well really one but I went back a few days later for a second adjustment just in case. I crawled in and walked out. It was amazing.
Sometimes you just need a minor adjustment

Have you tried adjusting or getting new pillows? If your head is too propped up, for example, it throws your entire spine out of whack.

Flower hill chiropractic - Bruce. Nassau county, near Hicksville/Jericho Tpke. He is a g-d send with magic hands. I would see him first. He is amazing and truly wonderful person who I trust completely as a chiropractor. I have driven two hours to see him.

I’m just curious why your feel this way? I find your statements unfounded and insulting.
I have had a couple of patients come to me after getting diagnosed in the ER with a pinched nerve when In fact they missed blood clots.

I think there are 2 camps when it comes to chiropractic care. Either you're on board with it or you're not. It just boils down to different philosophies.

I also find that when it comes to back pain doctor's solutions are to throw pain meds at it...but not fix the underlying issue.
At least in my experience that has been the case.
I went to a doctor once for neck pain and her answer was...take advil. Um thanks, I already am. I love advil. But how do we fix it. The chiro made a huge difference in actually fixing the underlying issue and I didn't need the advil anymore

I get disagreeing with chiropractic medicine, but this statement is denigrating to an entire profession and those who experience tremendous pain relief from it. Do you believe in physical therapy? Because there’s not much difference between what physical therapists and chiropractors do.
To answer the op’s question, an orthopedic doctor is not going to do much for you with only two weeks of pain complaints. An mri isn’t really warranted without persistent neurological complaints over a significant period of time. An orthopedic doctor will recommend medication and physical therapy first before any invasive procedure, so I would recommend seeing a chiro first. and if after a few months the pain is not improving, then see an orthopedic doctor.

I believe Physical Therapy is more evidence and science based than Chiropractors. There is also a history of chiropractors giving further advice on topics that they are not an expert on. It reminds me a lot of acupuncture.
Maybe people have had a really good experience with chiropractors, but if I had a choice I wouldn’t visit one and would go to PT or an orthopedist. Perhaps because I grew up with Scoliosis (obviously it wasn’t cured, but the evidence to support the Dr’s decisions and recommendations was strong) and visited an orthopedist for years, I feel a bit strong in this area.
I also do not agree with aligning newborns’ spines like chiropractors do. From what I understand, there is no scientific evidence that supports it.

I went to a physical therapist/chiropractor. (After seeing a neurologist) I was having neck pain and headaches from it for over a year. He fixed it in less than 6 weeks which is what my insurance gave me. He's in Suffolk if you're interested.

I agree. DH hurt his back when he was young, his parents brought him to a chiropractor that ended up damaging his spine, so I would recommend an actual doctor first to see what the problem is. I also have a friend that's a chiropractor and he says that once you start aligning everything, you should go regularly or the pain will come back. That just doesn't sit well with me because it's not actually fixing the problem. It just ropes you into regular "alignments". I don't want to offend anyone (especially the chiropractor that is posting here) but the whole practice is based on pseudoscience and isn't based on facts (you can google it for proof). I'm all for trying natural alternatives if there is nothing a doctor can do to fix it. I would see an orthopedist first though.

This isn't 100% accurate. It really depends on the problem, your doctor and your insurance. I've seen an ortho and they sent me right away for an MRI. Based on the pain/symptoms, sometimes they need an MRI to see the ligaments to diagnose the cause.
I also saw a doctor once for a dull pain in my abdomen, that took a while to get approval from my insurance for a CT scan. The insurance wanted to rule out other causes before they would pay for an expensive scan.
