Any g&t teachers here?
So my son took the g&t test and is going to g&t in Sept for 1st grade.
A couple questions:
I'm assuming curriculum is same just what? More accelerated? More hw? Just want to know what to expect.
G&T is only till 3rd grade? What happens after that?
Does he take the test every year? Or once is he is in g&t he stays in it?
Thanks!

I'm a G&T Teacher on Long Island. Is your son in NYC? That's what it sounds like. Please either post or PM your child's program because all are different.

Re: Any g&t teachers here?
My son is in G and T in Queens also...He's been in since kindergarten and it goes until 5th grade. Then he can take another test for middle school.
It's the same curriculum but there is some enrichment. They do some "research" projects, they all read at higher levels so their reading is a little more advanced, but at his school they do the same math book, etc. I haven't really noticed that much of a difference from what other 2nd graders are doing in non g and t classes.

It really depends on the school and even the teacher. Unless it's a citywide program like NEST or Anderson then it is all dependent on the school. I thought that once you tested in G&T you were in it for the rest of elementary, but maybe they changed it or it's different for your district.
A good G&T Teacher should not give more HW for busy work but should compact the curriculum so there is more time for authentic collaborative learning. I believe only the citywide G&Ts offer accelerated curriculum. District G&Ts simply enrich the grade level curriculum. So, a 3rd grade G&T class might have students create a storybook with word problems while the gen ed class would simply have students solve word problems.
Your best bet is to check out the school on insideschools.org to see what they offer.

Re: Any g&t teachers here?
Ok. Thank you. I'm not worried, was just more curious. Im actually excited for him to go. He tells me he is bored at school and asks to do the next lesson but he has to wait for the class to move on. And this kid is always asking for more hw. He says it's too easy.
Meanwhile his twin I rip my hair out with doing hw because he hates it and his brother says he'll do it for him please please please. Then I have them both begging me to let him do his brother's hw. And bc I say no, I'm mean mommy. Can't win with these kids!
