Anyone deliver at Good sam or Southside recently?

Hi! Im due with my third next month. It will be a c section. My last child was at Good Sam but it was 5 years ago. I was able to leave the baby in the nursery overnight so I could recover the first 2 nights. I am hearing horror stories now that the nurses refuse to take the baby at night for you anymore and there is no nursery?

I am so worried I will be drugged or too weak to lift the baby the first or second night and they wont take the baby ?? Anyone have experience with this new change?
TIA!

I had a C-section last month at Good Sam. As soon as I was wheeled into my room from recovery they brought my baby girl in. I was still numb from the anesthesia. The nurses kept saying we strongly encourage the baby to room in with you the whole time. My husband stayed in the room with me and took care of her all night since I couldn't get out of bed yet. I thought it was ridiculous.

Luckily, the next night a different nurse offered to take her to the nursery so we could get some sleep. We payed extra for a private room and on that floor you are led to believe theres no nursery, but there is. it was behind the nurses station so I didn't even notice it.

There is also a nursery on the floor of the non private rooms. You really have to push for the nurses to take the baby to the nursery. Only one nurse offered to take her back. It was really annoying. Good luck to you!

Thx so much for your reply this helps a ton! I also heard there was no nursery but couldnt understand legally how that could be! I plan to get a private room too. I guess I'll have to be demanding so that I can recover. So ridiculous considering I have two other kids and my husband can't stay all night. Unbelievable what they expect of us now! Thanks again!

I just delivered there 6 weeks ago and also 16 months ago. I had the same experience both times which is that they are reluctant to take the baby to the nursery but they will if you persist. My nurses were all terrific, no complaints at all, but you can tell they don't want to take the baby. I'm sure its because they have to deal with shit from higher up if they are too accommodating. Actually, this time, my DS was spitting up quite a bit and I said I was worried about him aspirating and she said something like "Oh so you are uncomfortable having him in here while you are sleeping because you are afraid you won't hear him if he spits up?" in a way that was hinting to me to agree (it was true regardless). I'm sure if you look at my chart it says I was uncomfortable and insisted the baby go up so she could CYA and that's fine with me. I got my rest which is all I wanted. If you have any other concerns, FM me. If you can swing it, definitely get the private room. I delivered my first 5 years ago and the new rooms are much more comfortable.

I am sorry but it's complete horseshit. For the amount of money it costs to have a baby and stay in tbe hospital it is a complete and utter disgrace how they treat you.
Can you imagine a patient who just had major abdominal surgery being told they are not allowed to sleep through the night the night right after surgery and have to wake up every 2 hours and lift a 7 lb object up all on their own?
So why is it ok on the maternity ward after a C section.
These greedy hospitals should be ashamed of themselves.
It's all about the money make no mistake. It has 0 to do with the good of the baby. Please. Why aren't they concerned with the good of their other patient. ..the mother. You know, the one who just gave birth and often times had major surgery?
I'd raise such a stink.

I completely agree. They kept stressing that it's important to bond with our baby right away. Like we're not going to bond with our child. I just wanted to recover a bit before I was on 24/7 duty. We have another child and my husband had to go back and forth to take care of him. I had to keep buzzing for a nurse whenever she cried.
Another thing is after the first 24 hours I had to keep asking for my pain meds, they never just brought them in when it was time. I was in a significant amount of pain too. It was frustrating.
I definitely recommend the private rooms. It was so quiet on the floor. The non private floor seemed very loud. Some rooms on that floor had a lot of guests at one time and that made me uncomfortable when they want the baby in the room with you the whole time.
The nurses and staff are very nice, but you have to be outspoken to get what you need.

I agree it's disgusting. My OB pretty much told me to just let them know that I'm going to drop the baby bc I'm so weak if they don't take them. Its insane how bad things become that I have to threaten that I'm going to drop my own child so that somebody can care for me after major surgery. I have definitely heard horror stories about nurses refusing. I have two other kids at home and I'm giving birth before Christmas. I know if I don't sleep I won't be able to recover. It's just sad what they expect of us. Thanks everybody. I was going into this getting a private room and making sure I insisted they take the baby. Now I know I'm going to have to probably be mean so the nurses can actually care for the baby . It's just another way they make us feel inadequate. As if we aren't good Moms because we want to recover after surgery for a few hours so we can actually care for the baby at home. I thought that was the reason you stay in a hospital!? I heard they are making this the new movement across the country. Anything to save a dollar!

That bonding crap is horseshit. I shipped my baby to the nursery every night, I didn't BF a second and we bonded just fine.
It's just an excuse for wanting to save money. Hospitals in this country are a money making machine and nothing more.

Re: Anyone deliver at Good sam or Southside recently?

I am delivering at Good Sam and i had heard this too. not looking forward to having to fight with nurses to send the baby to the nursery if i choose. I want a private room also, and I have heard that if you have a private room they put up more of a stink to take the baby, which like everyone said, if nuts.

I was also told there was no nursery on that private room floor, which i didn't like... but there is in fact a nursery on that floor? that is good to know, and keep in mind when i am there.

Good luck to you! Let us know how everything goes.

Re: Anyone deliver at Good sam or Southside recently?

I would suggest to all of you to maybe speak with your doctors beforehand. Explain your concerns about keeping the baby all night- especially if you are having a C section. I would bet the doctor's agree with you. Maybe they would be able to help with your requests to send the baby to the nursery at night.
There was one thing that happened while i was in th hospital that I didn't like (unrelated to sending the baby to the nursery) and I just said to the nurse- I want to speak to my doctor please get him or whoever is on call tonight on the phone. And they did, and bam, problem was solved.

I did not have my daughter there, but most hospitals are like this now. I have a 6 year old when my daughter was born and 6 years ago she went to the nursery all night. This time they told me that she stays with me....so I strongly told them, no, I have no one to stay over night (nore should I have to have someone stay) and I will be recovering, I told them that they are going to take the baby and I will not discuss it any further. Most of the nurses said no problem, one tried to tell me about bonding and all, and I said my mind is made up, so please stop talking. I told them each night when I wanted them to take the baby and when I wanted her back I just pressed the intercom and they brought her back to me. Stand your ground, they will keep the baby, I mean they are getting paid to by the insurance.

Anyone deliver at Good sam or Southside recently?

I delivered my DS in June 15 at Good Sam and had no issues with the nurses taking him overnight to the nursery. I also FF him and did not receive any pressure from anyone about breastfeeding.
