Thanks. This was one of the districts they were using as their main example but I called the district and they sent me over their wellness plan and it allows food for classroom party/activities. Just not for birthdays or as a reward.

We have allergy classes in the K-2 building in our district. Makes it easier for the aides that have to check each and every snack that comes into the classroom for snack time to make sure they are safe. I can assure you that the children don't feel "different". They probably have no idea it's a class with children that have allergies.

My son has food allergies and I *hate* that there are so many parties that include food. Additionally, most of the time it's junk food that is unnecessary for him to have so often.
I completely agree with you. Mine doesn't have allergies but I can imagine how scary it is for parents of children with allergies. I wish celebrations could be non-food related. If I wanted my kid eating a cupcake once a week I'd send it in as their snack.

We are in westchester & have a strict "no food" rule.
No food at any party or activity. Kids can't share any food including personal snacks. It works out really well (I agree cc junk food all the time). Parents get creative for birthdays and events.
ETA: whole school is nut free and every class has at least one kid with some kind of allergy/intolerance (there are signs on the doors)... which includes gluten

The school district I live in has a no food policy. The only thing that's allowed is packaged/labeled store bought treats for bday parties. Any thing else throughout the year is crafts and games. I love the way my district handles food and allergies. It's very inclusive and proactive.
The district I work for is a whole other story. Anything goes food wise and the incorporate food into everything.

Hampton Bays- not peanut free for snacks, lunch etc. , but starting with the K class now- no food for parties, goodie bags, anything. I'm actually really upset about it bc the teacher used to do a bread baking unit, not allowed anymore. My son's class got to help in the garden and weren't allowed to eat the vegetables they picked. It's insane! Now for Halloween the teacher said if we sent in an individual treat they couldn't stop our kid from eating it (hint hint) no one could just send in treats for the class. For his birthday, I sent in a game for the class and gave out pencils, notepads, and stickers.

Interesting. I'm not sure they actually follow that, at least in our school. It's only our first year but as far as I heard and have seen there is no food at all.

Yes they do have "allergy classes" my daughter has none but has been in one for 3 years. Her grade has 3 of them out of 6 this year. Usually it is 2. It means no food treats in the classroom, this year, just fruit and veggies. They can bring nut things etc to lunch though. There is an allergy table at lunch that kids with severe allergies eat at. There are a lot of kids at that table and they can arrange for a friend go eat with them as long as the friend brings a safe lunch every day. My daughter has eaten there with her allergy friend in the past. The class is not for just kids with allergies. It is a mixed class. It is no big deal and none of the kids are upset. In fact most feel safer. If I had a nut allergy kid I would want them in these classes. You know the kids snacks are safe foods, nothing that goes into the classroom can contain nut or peanut processed or contained products.
Btw IMO not class is much worse. My daughter had several food allergies she outgrew (milk, chocolate, strawberries and oranges now only shellfish allergy). In the primary school they only had a nut allergy class class. Since she was not nut allergic her allergies were ignored. She had frozen cupcakes in the nurses and cookies. But she had to watch every single kid bring brownies, chocolate cupcakes to school for 2 years while they laughed at her. This allergy class, which she is now in by coinincidence not because she needs it. The kids really care about each other and are super careful of their friends. So honestly to me an allergy kid in a non allergy class is pretty cruel, it certainly made my kid stand out rather than be more the norm.

We're in public school
The kids eat snack in the classroom every day.
If there is a child with an allergy in class, they send home a note explaining the allergy ......but even for class parties, birthday parties etc - we're even allowed to bring in homemade stuff ... - I was shocked when my oldest started K b/c in the daycare center everything had to be store bought and labeled with all ingredients just to get it through the door!

I have NO issue with cupcakes for a birthday celebration. A cupcake once a week is perfectly acceptable in my house .....every day, not so much. Get it together NervousNell !!
 
I do understand why they should be store bought and labeled though.
It's MORE of a pain now b/c my kids want specific homemade cupcakes for school, but then I still go out and buy a package of 'allergy approved' cupcakes for the other kids.

Free for all in our school...bake sales, parties, cupcakes for birthdays. If a child has an allergy then the parent normally leaves a box of approved snacks for them to have during parties.
DD has a shellfish allergy so if someone in her class has shrimp etc ( and they do sometimes!) she has to leave the room and go and eat her lunch with a friend somewhere else.

Found out what DS ate yesterday as part of his class party (plus there was *another* party at after school care) - he had 3 cupcakes, 2 Twizzlers, chips, and a lollipop. All before we even went out ToT!! So of course we didn't let him have any candy after we came home from ToT and he was bummed.
I would *love* for DS to be in a school that didn't allow food as treats (for bday or special parties). The amount of junk he ate yesterday is insane, and I'm surprised he didn't have a stomach ache when we picked him up.

Our school makes their own rules. Last year, there was no outside food allowed at all for holiday parties or birthdays because there were kids with allergies in the class. This year, there are no kids with allergies in the class so they are allowed to bring things in. His teacher loves candy so the amount of junk in their goody bag home was crazy. I preferred last year, where they got stickers or pencils to junky candy.

That's awful. I'm totally fine with my child having treats, but that type of excess is gross. Look how high the child obesity rate is, do we really need kids having this crap at school?

I vividly remember coming home from my first day of kindergarten and telling my mom I needed lunch AND a snack (she only sent lunch). She asked me what I wanted for snack and I said devil dogs. And devil dogs I got, every day until the box was finished. I probably even got a new box after that

We are in Rockland County.
Food is only allowed to be brought in for 4 parties a year (Halloween, Holiday, Spring and End of School).
Everyone is assigned a party and given something to bring in. We can only send in cupcakes, fruit and veggies foodwise.
All food and drink items must be sent in to the nurse 10 days prior to the party for approval.
I've asked friends in other schools in our district and this is just an individual school policy - not district wide.
ETA: You can bring in anything you want for lunch - if it includes nuts, you sit at the nut table.

I work in a district in Suffolk County and food is allowed. Store bought or homemade is ok, but we can only have ten food celebrations a year (one per month) so we tend to have food at holiday celebrations and not birthday celebrations (although as long as it's consistent throughout the grade level, you can choose when to include food in celebrations). For children with allergies, we need to let their parents know ahead of time what is being served. The parent will sign off on what their child can eat, if anything, and then they can also send in an alternate snack for their child. I encourage parents to bring in store bought items (stop and shop sells cupcakes that are nut free) and I always ask for fruit to be served along with the more unhealthy stuff. Yesterday for halloween my students ate mini cupcakes and fruit salad-they were practically fighting over the last piece of honeydew melon!

Is it that a kid with an allergy happens to be in the class? Or are there specific classes they are placing kids with allergies in because they have an allergy?
