I've been in your shoes (invited to a party in Bklyn at 7pm) and I have left my kids at home. No way would I consider taking them at that time. It would be miserable for them and for me. My kids go to bed early (at that age) and wouldn't even function at that time.

Yes I would, especially because of what the occasion is and that there will be a lot of family there. But my kids are very go with the flow. If your DD is going to be a nightmare and ruin the night for you, then no, I wouldn't bring her.

Re: Would you bring your child to this party?

No!

I would have done the same thing as you - booked a sitter right away. The only thing the kids are going to do at a party like that is drive me crazy because they are so tired and can't sleep in that situation.

I don't like to break from their bedtime routine too much. I will do it here and there but the situation has to work for all of us. If it was someones house I would think about going for a little bit; but would more than likely leave early. My kids just can't handle being up past 9.

Re: Would you bring your child to this party?

I would.. Family coming from all over wants to see her. It is one night. And you don't have to stay the whole time. Bring a stroller and she may sleep in it.

exactly..same with my kids. If it was at someone's house, I would go and leave early but going all the way to Bklyn to stay 1 or 2 hrs is just not worth it. IMO.

Re: Would you bring your child to this party?

Tough one. If family never met my baby and wanted to, I would probably bring child for a little bit. I am assuming you have to meet at 6 if surprise is at 7?

Take 2 cars or take 1 car and have DH get a ride or uber home. You can come home early with the baby.

I would. My children stay up for special occasions, and I'd consider this a special occasion. If she's really THAT tired, she might fall asleep in a stroller, so I'd bring that.

Re: Would you bring your child to this party?

Nope, that would not have worked in my case when both of my kids were 17months old. Bringing them out at bedtime sure, if I wanted to have a crappy time, have my hair pulled, hear screaming for hours. They were not easy going when they were tired. When my kids were tired, they needed their cribs & to be left alone, not poked at by strangers.

Yes definitely.

Maybe you can try to get together with out of town family the next morning for brunch.

I would bring them only if there would be other kids for them to play with. If not it wouldn't be worth it, I would rather them stay with the sitter.

Would you bring your child to this party?

Never. But bedtimes is one thing I am pretty strict about. My kids will wake up between 6:30-7 no matter what time they go to sleep the night before. Which makes for a miserable day. So my 5 yr old is in bed at 8:30, 3 yr old at 8, and 19 month olds at 7:30, every. single. night. People can give me crap all they want. They aren't the ones dealing with overtired, clingy kids at midnight.

Re: Would you bring your child to this party?

I'm super laid back and my kids have always been night owls, but I would leave a 17 month old home. It will throw off the next day's schedule and you likely won't enjoy yourself as you'll be dealing with an overtired toddler.

You are the mom and know your kid best. If you know it is a ridiculous request, then it is. If your mil actually gets mad at you and doesn't respect your decision, then she is selfish.

I was in a similar situation recently and I brought teenage mother's helpers (I have twins so 2) and it worked out well.
Everyone was able to see the babies and when they lost their shit as expected the girls were able to take them out to the lobby and walk around with them to calm and get them to sleep and I still got to (mostly) enjoy the party.

The girls are my cousins and the party was on my husband's side, they help me A LOT so my kids know them well and they know my kids well.

She's crazy... you're not.... I think that grandparents sometimes forget what it was like to be a parent of a very young child.

I would. We have set bedtime during the week but on weeekends and special occasions all schedules go out the window.

Me too. I would definitely bring the baby especially if you have family coming from out of town. I've always brought my girls to family functions even if they were late. I always bring my stroller so they can fall asleep in there but my girls pretty much can fall asleep with noise/without etc.
