The flight is so short to buy the baby a seat imo. Total waste of money.

Def keep baby on your lap and just get the 3 seats in a row. Your older child can sit in the middle and then it's easy to pass the baby back & forth between you & DH if needed. Plus you don't have to worry about sitting next to strangers with the baby.

Over the summer we flew to LA with my 6 month old and 4.5 year old and didn't buy a fourth seat. It was totally fine, but we did upgrade to extra room seats on the way out (American Airlines), and the airline on the way back (Virgin America) had more legroom standard.

I say yes but I'm in the minority. Even IRL everyone tells me I'm nuts, including DD's ped!

Serious question... what do you do with the 4th seat if you did buy it? You bring a car seat or something to strap into the plane? I really don't feel like that would be all that much safer.

lol yes rear facing in case of accident just like in a car. It is definitely safer if something happens, but the odds of something happening on any flight is slim to none.

I answered Yes. We bought my 1.5 year old a seat on the plane to Florida. For me, it wasn't a splurge, it was a safety thing. The tickets werent cheap either because we bought less than 21 days out.
For the seating, baby would go in the window seat, then you can sit in the middle and your DS next to you and DH across the aisle. Or, you could do 2 and 2. There are some flights that have rows of 2 if you prefer that.

Yes and that way they are strapped in. If there is turbulence, you might not be able to hold onto the baby. They sell some straps to help you hold baby that attach to your seat belt, but you aren't allowed to use those during take off or landing.

For me there is no way I'd buy a seat for a 6 month old. Not worth it. We are going to fl in feb and did not buy a seat for ds3 who will be 7 months then. I've flown with both my older ds as lap kids too and it was no problem.

I'm flying right now with a baby. I didn't buy the fourth seat either. JetBlue has a lot of space (and free in flight wifi). I use the harness during the flight. It makes me feel better about possible turbulence. It's easy to take it off your seatbelt during landing etc.

It is significantly safer than flying with a baby on your lap. The faa and aap both agree that an unrestrained lap baby is not recommended for safety reasons.

I've flown with a lap baby once because we had a family member meeting us with a car seat at the airport but I'll never do it again. Not worth the risk imo.

We did it when DS was almost 18mo. It was fine.

We did it with DS at 6 mos for a 45 min flight and it was fine. We attempted it again at 8mos for a 3hr flight and were miserable. We always bought them seats after that.

Anyone who says it will be fine has never been on a flight with turbulence... If the plane hits severe turbulence there is no way you can hold onto that baby.

Of course the chances of turbulence are low, but it's just something to think about. Most of us will never be in a car accident but we still put our children in car seats.
