Anyone red shirt their child based on ADHD?
my son has ADHD. I am toying with the idea of red shirting him due to his impulsivity and immaturity.
He is 4 and will turn 5 in July.
anyone do this? anyone not do it and regret it?

My DS does not have ADHD, but my SO's son does (among other things) and I think that keeping him back would have hurt him, he thrives more with kids who are older because he wants to be like them.

It really depends on your child and what you think would be best for them. There are going to be opinions on both side that are valid. Our DD has high functioning autism but in Gen Ed and we red shirted her for K. Socially she is more on par with the younger than the older and it was the best thing for her. In third now she is with the correct kids for her socially.
On the other side, I have a friend who held back her kids just because she wanted to give them an edge. Now the boy is in 5th and much more mature than the others, much bigger than the others and is not allowed to play on the sports teams with his friends because of his age. She regrets her decision.

Anyone red shirt their child based on ADHD?
I considered it when my son was turning 5. I decided not to. And although he was immature compared to some for the first few years, he ultimately caught up. Now that he's 12 and in the 7th grade, I'm so thankful I didn't. He's more mature than others his age, and bigger. It would be weird if he were that much bigger than all the 6th graders.

In my experience holding back a child with a diagnosis/disability does not work. Time doesn't help, intervention/services does. In kindergarten they can start identifying what works to help him learn and what he will need regarding accommodations, modifications and services. He will have access to lots of developmental specialists as will his classroom teacher. Another year of PreK is just another year of PreK. Kindergarten will offer him much more.

Agree with everything pp wrote. I have twins who are turning 5 in November. I'm in Queens and I guess the 5 boroughs doesn't red shirt, because you never hear about it here. You go to school based on the year you were born and that's it. They were born in 2011 so kindergarten it is.
One of my sons exhibits ADHD signs but we are trying him in a ICT class for kindergarten. The other will be in a 12 SC due to impulse and socialization issues. Both will continue speech and OT next year. Am I nervous? Of course. But I don't think holding them back is the right thing. I think getting them the right support and services is the key.

My boys are 5 at the end of Oct. I was contemplating holding them back. (one more then the other) One of my boys has some social issues & the other physical. We have decided to let them go & pray for the best. I just had my meeting. The one with social issues will be declassified, but kept on rador & the other will have an aide to assist at school. I am satisfired, hope its the right decision.

i agree with iluvnutty as both a mom with a child with needs and a special education teacher. Also, something VERY important to think about: if your child is getting services through CPSE and you decide to redshirt, they do NOT have to provide services for the extra year of preschool.
my son will be 5 in june--has a little of a lot of things: ADD, sensory, speech, low tone, etc. He receives CPSE now and i will be putting him in kindergarten as scheduled. I worry about how he will do, but am hoping services will be good (have not had meeting yet)

Something to think about. Is your child very bright? If so holding back might bring out more ADHD traits in the classroom if he is bored. Keeping him engaged will help maintain his attention in the classroom, if he is very bright and bored it might make it more difficult work wise.

I agree with this. I just FMed you with some more info, but this is an excellent point. My son is very bright...he's always been very advanced academically. In K even he was way ahead of grade level on almost everything. Because he felt "bored" and un-challenged, we noticed his symptoms were much worse. Once the teacher agreed to allow him to read books at a 2nd grade level and do worksheets that were more advanced, we noticed he was able to focus much better, sit for longer, put more effort into his work.

I knew my DS was ADD long before he was diagnosed. He has a late October birthday and I could have easily held him a year. But I didn't. He's in 4th grade now and I have never regretted the decision. He was going to have ADD regardless of when he started kindergarten and I knew he would be bored sh!tless in a third year of preschool. He definitely would have gotten in trouble more out of sheer boredom. He has also always related better to older kids and I knew holding him back would be a disservice to him. He does extremely well academically and even "plays up" in soccer.
