Temporary Health Insurance. Is there any options?

So my husband is contemplating accepting a new job. The caveat is that the insurance won't kick in until 60 days. We were expecting to use cobra for two months but was told because he's leaving on his own he wont qualify. Going two months without insurance is really not an option. Is there anything we can do. The opportunity is great, but the now insurance for 60 days is a deal breaker. Any options. We have two small kids. Willing to just have them covered if possible.

I don't believe this is true. My understanding is that the reason you separate from your job has no bearing on whether you're eligible for COBRA.

I heard this as well- especially since you are paying for it- and paying a LOT as far as I hear.
I'd check further into that.

I just looked it up you should still be able to have COBRA . who told you that you couldn't use it

From this site:

If I voluntarily leave my employment, is that considered to be a qualifying event?

Answer: Yes. Unless the covered employee was terminated due to gross misconduct, it does not matter whether the employee voluntarily terminated employment or was discharged.

I agree. I left my job, moved OOS. I was not penalized. I had cobra for I believe was 15 months. Definately One year.

Thanks so much for the information. I thought he should have the option for coverage. His boss told him he couldn't get it. I sent him the link and ask him to look into it more.

No, you should definitely be able to get Cobra. I left my last job and was given all the Cobra information before I left, but I didn't need since I am on my husbands insurance. Cobra shouldn't affect the current employer since you will be paying for it 100%.

DH left his company around this time last year, and was also given cobra info, I would have him speak to his HR supervisor, not his boss.

You should be able to have Cobra no matter what the reasons for leaving the job.

You can apply for Child Health Plus for your children.

Re: Temporary Health Insurance. Is there any options?

The 60 day period is also strategic for this new company as they know you have 60 days to elect COBRA and it will cover you retroactively to your first day without insurance. The new company can save 2 months of insurance costs on new hires, knowing it isn't putting new hires into such a bind.

So for example, if you want to roll the dice and hope for no unexpected medical visits in 60 days, you can hold off on signing up for COBRA and if something does happen where you need a doctor, within 60 days you can elect COBRA and you will have insurance retroactive to day 1 of no coverage. But if nobody in your family needs a doctor in those 60 days, or if you deem it a manageable expense to pay out of pocket, then you can skip doing COBRA and just wait for the new employer's insurance coverage to kick in. Because of this 60 day window, I think you'll find a lot of employers delay coverage by the same 60 days for new hires.

Try this Link
Cobra FAQ

Sorry if it was already posted

But yes.. you don't HAVE to take COBRA those 60days. But if you NEED it you have those 60days to report it and trigger it.

I floated those days.

Other than reporting to the IRS I was uninsured for 2 months (no penalty for less than 3m) I had no issues. But if I NEEDED serious care, I'd have triggered it. Something's better than nothing. But it was a budgeting issue as COBRA is expensive.

My house does not qualify for ACA.

This is what we did when my husband switched jobs. His would up being 90 days so we took out catostrophic insurance for a month that only covered emergency hospitalization. It worked out perfectly because our dr's for 3 months only charged us what our previous insurance paid them for sick visits or whatever. So it would up saving us a lot of $$$. Cobra is so expensive!!

This isn't true. DH resigned from his job recently and we just got the cobra paperwork in the mail. It is available regardless of the terms on which he leaves. Its very expensive though $1600 for the month for a whole family for us. The insurance kick is in may 1st so we are just going to wait Chat Icon

He is absolutely eligible for COBRA regardless if he quits or is let go. Also, just in case this applies - If you have any pre-existing conditions, you should pickup COBRA to ensure you have continuous coverage. If there is a lapse in coverage you could have a problem with coverage to treat that condition right away under the new plan.

If the new plan were to begin during that 60 day grace period for electing cobra, that wouldn't be a lapse in coverage right?

Re: Temporary Health Insurance. Is there any options?

i left my job on my own and was given paperwork for Cobra. I dont think that has anything to do with it. I opted against it b/c the cost was more than my mortgage to cover 3 of us.

at the time I had found a plan throughthe freelancers union for myself, put DS on the CHIPS through PA and DH got a plan through work. (it was cheap for him, just not for 3 of us).

i would definitely look into cobra for 2 months b/c you should be eligbile regardless of how you left the job
