How did you tell DC1 that they're going to be a big brother/sister?

I'll be 7 weeks pregnant on Monday. We haven't told DS yet (he is almost 7 yo) but we will be seeing my entire family for my Grandma's 80th birthday on April 16th (I will be 10 weeks) and we planned on telling them then. So, we'd like to tell DS the week before so that he knows before the rest of the family. I want to find a cute way to surprise him and tell him. I'd love some ideas and suggestions....how did you tell your kid(s) that they were going to be a big brother or sister?

I told DS1 before I even told DH, but he was only 1 and didn't get it at all. I remember being told about my youngest brother when I was 8. My mom opened a gift that said "Baby in '93" and my dad videotaped our reactions. They'd been telling us we had a surprise coming for a while- my sister thought it was a baby, I wanted a slide for the pool...

I had the same reaction when my mom told me about my sister on the way. haha. She kept saying that there would be a surprise when my older sister got home from school (I was only 3 so I stayed home). I waited and waited and finally she got home from kindergarten and my mom announced that she was having a baby. We were both sooo disappointed! We thought we were getting barbies. lmao. I feel so bad for my mom that we weren't as excited as she was, but we were little and saying that a baby would come in like a year meant nothing to us. We were definitely excited when she came home from the hospital with her though!!

Anyhoo, I don't have any advice for how to tell your son, but I can tell you how I told my daughter at least. As I wrote above about how disappointed I was to learn about my mother's pregnancy when I was 3, I just didn't want the same kind of reaction from my daughter (who was 4). So I made sure NOT to tell her that I had a surprise waiting for her because for a child that young a surprise is a TOY. It is not telling her that a baby is coming in some vague future that she can't understand. So instead we took her out to dinner and I gave her a present. It was a pretty jewelry music box. Inside of it was a little toy - which is a replica of a baby at 12 weeks gestation. We explained to her that mommy had a baby in her belly that was exactly that big right now and he or she would grow and grow and at Christmas time come out and be part of our family. She definitely enjoyed the toys way more than the exciting news, but the visual helped a lot. She kept asking when the baby was coming though, so we got a calendar and marked the due date then crossed off each day, talking about how much longer, etc. Your son is older so he may not need a visual like that, but it helped in my case Chat Icon

We told my step daughter by buying her a frame that said "I love my Big Sister" or something to that effect and superimposed a pic of her on the sono and stuck it in the frame. She loved it and was so excited.

(Not a mom) but maybe buy a "big Brother" tee shirt for him to open. Then tell him to wear the shirt for the party. Have him wear a jacket/sweater, something. Then at one point have him take it off.

or even better yet. Just have him wear it and see how long it takes people to figure it out :)

That's what we did with Hailey to announce to our families.

We told our 5 year old on Halloween before we went to any of the grandparents houses. He was more interested in his candy than the news LOL. But we had him tell the families the big news and everyone was shocked.

We did this on Thanksgiving in 2014. DS wore a "Awesome boys get promoted to big brother" shirt. We used it with all the get togethers with friends too (I was washing it alot!). Its actually amazing how long it took some people to read the damn shirt LOL

but DS was not quite 2 when we found out, so we just kept telling him and talking about the baby to him. He only really seemed to get it a like 3 months before baby arrived.

My son was six when we told him we were expecting and we put the announcement in his fortune cookie at dinner. He loves chinese food and loved reading his fortunes so we thought it was a good way to do it. it was funny because we videotaped him and then sent the video to our family and that is how we told everyone. It was really cute!

My friend who's son was almost 6 and my cousin who's daughter was 4 1/2 had them open a t-shirt saying that they were going to be a big brother/sister.

The kids then wore their shirts to the family gathering they were attending that same day.
