Potty training and daycare

My daughter is just shy of 2.5 years old. This past weekend we started her wearing underwear. At daycare on Monday we told them that we transitioned her to underwear and to please ask her if she has to use the potty. I brought in loads of extra underwear and pants.

Monday afternoon after a couple of accidents they requested pull ups. I told them I wanted to give it more time and they said ok. But tonight they started again with pull ups and even hinted at sanitary concerns if she were to pee on the floor. So far her accidents haven't been more than soaking her pants.

I' m a bit frustrated by this. Does anyone have any tips to deal with daycare? I don't want to be one of those annoying parents but at the same time I need their support since she is there more than she is at home.

Potty training and daycare

I can't speak about daycare but dd is in nursery school. She just turned 2 1/2 and we trained her over winter break. When I sent her back to school I was nervous and sent her in pull ups. I told the teachers we were training her. They were great about taking her to the bathroom. After a week of her keeping her pull up dry I pulled the trigger and she's been in underwear full time.

I know this might not be what you want to hear, but maybe she's not ready for underwear. Maybe let her wear the pull ups and they can train her and take her to the potty throughout the day. Once her pull ups are dry all day then switch to underwear. Jmo

thanks.

How long do I give it before I deem her not ready? A week? A couple of days?

I didn't do underwear until she kept her pull up dry consistently.

Potty training and daycare

I went straight to underwear but he had been 2 days with no accidents when he went back to daycare. He had one accident the first day back and then was basically dry. If he was having multiple accidents a day I would not have sent him Bach to daycare in underwear

I agree she doesn't sound ready for underwear. Put her in pull-ups so she gets the idea of pulling her "underwear" down and going potty.

Does her day care take her potty once an hour? My son's does, so for those kids who aren't trained, there's less room for accidents, but they get used to sitting on the potty and seeing their friends go.

i would try underwear then pull ups over it. Have them take her every hour, at least if she has an accident it won't "soak the floor" if they still complain sounds like they can't be bothered to change her. Does she have any interest in the potty? I would give it a bit more time and if there's no interest at all she may not be ready

Did she have accidents on Tuesday too? If so - I would send in pull ups. We gave DS 2 two days before we were going to throw in the towel. Luckily, it clicked before the end of 2 days (he is older though - 3y9m - just stubborn).

Re: Potty training and daycare

They definitely need to support your potty training efforts but if she is having multiple accidents like that, they can't be cleaning it up constantly, going through change of clothes after change of clothes, cleaning the floor etc.
She may just not be ready yet. Sometimes kids need a bit more time and then it clicks - like a switch..

I'd see how she does today and if it's still bad, I'd go back to the pull ups

Re: Potty training and daycare

My DD turned 3 in November. We battled potty training since the summer. Nothing worked.

I did try to send her to daycare in underwear one day and they told me after 2 accidents they would put a pull up on her.

Finally about 2 weeks ago I put her in underwear AGAIN, and she just did it.

It's true that it just has to click. Keep trying at home on the weekends, and eventually she will just get it.

Re: Potty training and daycare

That's unacceptable. Daycare should be supporting potty training not curbing it. My daycare was really proactive with potty training DS1 even before I thought he was ready. They potty trained him, which was really nice. Once he actually peed on the potty, it clicked and they had us send him in underwear within a few days of his first time peeing on the potty.

DS2 was much more stubborn and difficult to train. We decided to do a modified version of the 3 day method at home 1 weekend. The following Monday, his teachers continued where we left off. His teacher told us to bring in as many changes of clothes and underwear that we wanted. She brought him to the potty every 30 minutes, offered treats and dealt with numerous accidents at the beginning. I think we had them use pull ups during nap time and possibly before we did the 3 day method, but the teachers were very supportive of underwear and following our lead. They didn't care how many accidents he had.

As a parent who did not use pull ups at all during potty training I would not be cool with that at all. They should be supporting the potty training!

Yes, but sometimes a child is just not ready for potty training.
Having multiple accidents a day, can be very disruptive when you have a class full of children.
All children have accidents here and there, but if she is having multiple, it may be a sign she is just not ready. And that's ok too.

Re: Potty training and daycare

I agree your DD may not be ready.

We just potty trained this weekend and went straight to underwear. I was shocked by how easy it was. I started Saturday and on Monday she went to daycare with underwear on.

She had one poo accident on Saturday and one pee accident on Sunday (both times was because she was playing and forgot she wasn't wearing a diaper and caught herself in the middle in a panic). She hasn't had any accidents since and it's Thursday.

I agree with this. We did not really use pull ups but understood if my daycare asked us to use them if there were multiple accidents a day. The daycare IMO is supporting them but you cannot have a student peeing all day long. It is a health issue. An accident here and there is fine but multiple a day then the child is not ready to be in underwear full time.

ITA, too. We didn't use pull ups at home and I hated when they put DD in a pull up for her nap time for a couple of days - but if it's not just an accident or two, it's not fair to insist they only use underwear.

Once we transitioned to underwear daycare was fine with it. She occasionally still has an accident but daycare cleans it up and deals with it. Dd was not getting potty training till we got rid of pull ups. We still give them but it's only for nap time. She has been training since Nov and the last 4 days no accidents. Pull ups are diapers to her.

If she's doing well at home, she may be ready. I'd want to know why she's having multiple accidents per day at daycare. How often are they taking her to the bathroom? How often are they asking her if she has to use the bathroom? Is it a full on accident or does she start to go and then realize she needs to use the potty?

DS2 easily had at least 3 accidents per day at the beginning, but part of that was the daycare teachers learning the signs for him that he had to go and learning what method worked best. He's the kind of kid who doesn't want to miss anything so he'll wait until he can barely hold it in to go and will lie and say he doesn't have to go. They learned that they had to really be on top of him about going. It probably took a few weeks before he was being proactive about going to the potty. Even now he'll wait until the last minute at daycare and sometimes make it to the bathroom, but not quite to the potty.

I think some kids can totally regress with pull ups so if she made a lit of progress at home, I'd want to try the underwear for at least a few more days.
