Gestational diabetes

Is there a specific diet to follow or is it different for everyone?

I failed my 1 hr with a 162, and I'm measuring 2 weeks ahead so my OB is almost positive my 3 hr will show I have it and I'd like to make sure I know what I'm doing if that does happen.

anyone have tips or advice? Did anyone have a problem after delivery? Since my dad has diabetes it scares me a bit that I'm predisposed and will end up having it even after birth.

I just failed my three hour. They had me meet with the doctor and with a nutritionist. The diet is not too bad. It's basically limiting carbs.. Main meals they want me to have a certain amount of carbs and for snacks another certain number of carbs. I have to take my sugar when I first get up for a fasting number that they want below 95 and two hours after every meal which they want below 120. The numbers for gestational diabetes is more stringent then regular diabetes. It hasn't been to bad to follow the diet .. It's really a learning curve on figuring out what your body can process and what it can't.

That's good to know, it didn't take a long time to find foods that's worked for you? I kept picturing weeks going by and not fully getting it right which isn't good for the baby. I guess I can't do much until I find out for sure. They are making me carb load for 3 days before my 3 hr, which I don't see as a good idea since then I'll crave the carbs longer lol.

I had it for DD and pretty sure I have it again.

For me the diet didn't work I went on insulin for DD and I'm pretty sure that's going to happen again this time.

For 95% of people the diet works. Did they send you to a nutritionist? They will give you a diet to follow and tell you how many carbs you should eat during the day. Also excercise helps.

I did have elevated sugar levels after DD was born but once I lost some weight it regulated itself.

Protein is your friend. Eggs, meats, beans. Dannon light and fit Greek yogurt is great because it has less carbs than protein.

Both babies were perfect, full term, and in the 7lb range. All of their blood sugars came back perfectly. Mine did as well. However, I'm convinced I was misdiagnosed both times.

Re: Gestational diabetes

I didn't speak to a nutritionist yet since I didn't take the 3 hr yet. I'm really hoping I pass it, but because I failed the 1 hr by a lot, and I'm measuring bigger I figure there's a good chance I have it and want to be prepared.

I love that one of you said you had a 7 lb baby bc I'm kind of freaking out about having a very large baby. My first 3 were all under 8 lbs too, but let's be real it hurt like a ***** delivering them, so any bigger and I'm just scared honestly lol.

At the end of the day, I'm praying for a happy and healthy baby boy and all this other stuff will be so worth it when he's finally here, but I've been having a few set backs this pregnancy and starting to get anxious of the unknown etc.

I was diagnosed super late (35w5d) and wound up having DS at 37w2d so I didn't have to follow the diet long.

For me, the diet wasn't hard at all and I never had a hard time making my numbers. In fact, often times I was on the lower end of normal. I agree that protein is your friend. I ate cheese, eggs, yogurt and/or peanut butter with every meal/snack. It felt like I was constantly eating and oddly enough, I even lost 2lbs in those last 2 weeks.

I have it for pregnancy 2 as well as 1. A very small percentage will have issues afterwards. I was one of them. My entire family has diabetes or some form of insulin resistance. I am on metformin and insulin for the pregnancy. Finding foods that work can be difficult. It's just a matter of trial and error. The nutritionist were very helpful as we're friends and people on here who had it. Feel free to pm me any questions. Best of luck
