Cooking oil - what to use?

I am so confused by this topic.

People have always said corn oil is bad. Then someone told me it lowers cholesterol.

Then I hear (could be all due to Rachel Ray) - olive oil is the way to go! its the best, healthiest, etc...

Then I hear Canola oil is better for cooking, it helps the heart and so on....then I hear its bad when heated!

Then I hear, get a blend of Canola/Corn oil, then I hear corn, then I hear Olive.

Now I hear use coconut oil to cook.

Whats the bottom line?

I just want an oil to use when I am cooking so that the food doesn't burn to the pan.
I would also like it to be healthy

Thank you

We only use grape seed oil for cooking.

I sometimes use coconut oil for oatmeal, that's about it

I mostly use extra virgin olive oil for salad dressing and cooking, except if I have to fry something.

If I'm frying I like to use canola oil because it has a high smoke point. Also I use canola oil in baking because it doesn't have as much as a flavor as olive oil.

I use sunflower oil for anything that requires high heat. For quick, and low/medium heat I use a blend of canola and coconut oil. For all salads, I have a bottle of evoo, and I drizzle over.

Re: Cooking oil - what to use?

I use so many for different things.

I use grape seed if I am using high heat, like a seer on a steak, Bc it has a high smoke point.

I do not cook with olive oil Bc chemicals come out when it is heated, but I use it in dressings etc.

If I am baking I use something else in place of the oil, depending on what it is, as I won't use vegetable or canola oil, unless I really have to.

I will use cococnut oil at certain times, but nothing that I won't mind a hint of coconut to.

I used to roast my veggies with olive oil, but I'm not comfortable with cooking olive oil, so now I would rather use my grass fed butter.

I always cook with extra virgin olive oil unless I'm frying something (which is rare) in which case I usually use veggie or canola oil.

Corn oil has gmos. I would stay away. I use evoo for veggies and things like that. And coconut oil for eggs and fried rice and anything Thai or if I want a coconut flavor.

.

I've never, ever heard that. Olive oil is used in SO many recipes that I find it hard to believe it's toxic to cook with. Just curious, where have you heard this?

Re: Cooking oil - what to use?

I use mostly canola oil - it doesn't have a taste so it doesn't change the flavor of the food I'm cooking

I use olive oil in Italian dishes and salad dressings because they call for that taste.

each type of oil has a different smoke point. most oils have low smoke points and are not suitable for high heat cooking.

When my brother was diagnosed with cancer (2009) he went to a nutritionist and this is what she told him. She told him to cook with grape seed oil Bc it has a high smoke point, and doesn't give off a taste like coconut oil (which is also good to cook with). I've never personally researched it, but I took her word for it.

I know about smoke points, it's why I don't fry with olive oil however, I useit for other cooking such as to saute. I just never heard of it releasing toxins as someone mentioned. Interesting.

Re: Cooking oil - what to use?

Olive oil, coconut oil and avocado oils are medium chain fatty acids (triglycerides). The body will utilize this fat more readily for ATP (mitochondria's energy) rather than store it as fat. This is great for general health, and also for weight loss. Fatty acid digestion is a big deal :)

Canola, and Corn are GMO's unless they are organic and also do not work the way MCTs work as they are long chain triglycerides

There were some studies done trying to say that olive oil and even avocado oil will oxidize under high heat but I believe the studies were under particular conditions.

I was just reading an article about oils before and it seems that there's so many out there that are not good for you even the ones that supposedly are like on the olive oil, if it is not cold or expeller pressed supposedly is not good for you.
