I didn't read all the replies, but I bet all the offices have air conditioning, right?

ETS: I just can't imagine the principal not having a/c in their office.
If they can have it, why not classrooms?

I don't know, I just feel like any public building not being ACed in this day and age is pretty much unheard of. I can't think of any other public place where there is no AC.

It's so antiquated, it's almost ridiculous.

We live in a modern society with modern conveniences. ..this is not a 3rd world country.
The fact that our children and their teachers have to work and learn under these conditions is pretty ridiculous IMO.

ITA with you!!!

Also, it can be downright dangerous to sit in a sweltering hot room. In my last year of teaching I was 6 months pregnant that June and we had a heat wave, it was in the HIGH 90's every day for like a week and I did't have an a/c in my room. The temp inside the room was registering well OVER 100 degrees, that is UNBEARABLE. I was having severe dizzy spells and feeling sick, extreme heat and pregnancy don't mix. I ended up taking my kids into the portables every day with another class because they had a/c. You can't function in that kind of heat, pregnant or not, and to expect kids to focus and pay attention when they are melting and exhausted from the heat is ridiculous.

On the island with what we pay in taxes there really is no excuse to not have a/c in the rooms, it's no less important than having heat in the winter. I'm thankful our elementary schools installed an a/c in every room, it's worth EVERY penny they spent.

We did not have AC when I was a kid. Other countries do not have AC. Its for a few weeks at the most. We have all become so accustomed to modern conveniences we don't remember that very recently most places did not have AC and we were all fine.

I wouldn't say people were fine, they were just as hot and miserable. That aside, it doesn't mean that times can't change. It's the 21st century in what is considered to be one of the "greatest countries" in the world...............stick an a/c in the window for goodness sake. There is especially NO excuse to not do it on this island, take a look at what we pay in taxes, I'm sure they can find some "a/c money" somewhere in that budget.

Exactly. That argument doesn't fly with me at all. We are a society of change and progress. Shouldn't things be BETTER for our kids than they were for us? Just like things were BETTER for us than our parents, and them their parents, etc.
Back in the Little House on the Prairie days they didn't have indoor plumbing. And they survived. Yet do you expect your kid to go to an outhouse at school in 2015? No.

I am not talking about installing some new fangled technology in the schools- AC has been around for decades.
As I mentioned before, name one public place you go today, in 2015, that is NOT air conditioned.
I bet you can't.

And don't even get me started on what we pay in taxes for my DD to come home flushed and dripping wet and exhausted. It infuriates me

We pay some of the highest property taxes in the country, with the majority going to schools, and the teachers and kids are forced to work and learn in such a terrible environment. It's actually really disgusting the more I think about it.

I agree. It infuriates me. We can't afford AC for a few weeks a year? Really?

"Can't afford" AC for the schools but you better believe the districts library has a new freshly paved parking lot every year. Chat Icon

Yup exactly!!! It's just insane. Next week is supposed to be really hot also. I might end up keeping my DD home, which sounds stupid, but she was seriously so lethargic yesterday. She went to bed at 7pm, which is not normal for her. She takes a water bottle, but I guess it's not enough when it's 100 degrees in a stuffy building with no air flow and no recess.

I can't get a straight answer at my school. If a child proves via Dr. note that they have a severe enough medical condition, and go to a 504 meeting, and jump through several other hoops and get approved....then you get a window unit installed for the school year. But the unit travels with that child each year. It's beyond stupid. The hot days of September and June are permanent. This issue is always going to exist, so why not deal with it?

Oh, but I bet if these were charter schools there would be AC.

I can't stand how the DOE and other educational authorities state how important the children are, and how much they care, yet cannot upgrade the simplest conveniences for the children, and in the same breath then demean teachers and how much the teachers don't care about the children.

Parents, if you haven't figured it out now, they are playing games with the unions so charter schools can be the law of the land, and your children are in the middle of it.

Don't even get me started on the bathrooms. I could cry! I'm not kidding!Have you looked at the bathrooms your children use? Old, old, old.

Window units are fairly inexpensive. How much would it cost a district to make sure every class room has one? I remember getting sick from the heat when I was a kid. Ridiculous that this is still an issueChat Icon

Sad but true. As I kid I recall my rooms being warm, but teaching in the city in fourth-floor classrooms where you could not open the windows fully was dangerous in the hot weather. I recall a few times where kids and/or teachers needed emergency medical help on those very hot days. We did get window units, but by the time I quit many of them no longer worked due to age and were not replaced. You were just SOL.

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?

My kids classroom is freezing when I drop him off in the morning. We live in the south (so maybe thats why the AC is used more?) and I am still packing sweatshirts for him every morning

ETA: I remember when I was in elementary school on LI we never had AC's, I think only a handful of classes did.

How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?

its kind of sad really, when i was in junior high i had major issues with getting overheated. building had some inverse temp setup, so colder it got outside the hotter it was inside. typically went home sick after gym at least 2 times a week, until i got pulled out of gym for good with a medical note. and i wore short sleeves, and no coat to school ever. i don't understand how they can treat people like this. kids or adults. its asking for heat stroke, or to pass out from heat exhaustion. then the lawsuit will cost more than the a/c units and electricity.

As a teacher, I can tell you that a lot of these units they purchase are too small to adequately cool the rooms. We had four new ones installed today and they did absolutely nothing. We had to keep our doors closed and the windows closed because of these new ACs and we didn't get any kind of breeze at all. I thought the kids were going to pass out .

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?

The explanation I received was that since we're an older building, the electric set up could not handle ac's in every room. There are 5 ac's on the first floor of my building (3 of which are in the main office, 1 of which is in the guidance department), and 4-5 on the 2nd floor, all in classrooms.

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?

We had orientation last night for my daughter in kindergarten and we were dying. We all were fanning ourselves and the men were wiping their foreheads with tissues because the sweat was pouring down. It's like stagnant disgusting air. And that was at 8pm when it was cooler out!! I can only imagine how it is during the day in 95 degrees. My daughter comes home so gross and her face is so red from the heat.

This...I'm one of 2 classes on my floor with A/C. The other 3 were told they'd get it this year....in June :/

My colleague couldn't take it anymore so she put up a proposal on DonorsChoose.org for a portable A/C & will use that when necessary.

This is one way around the problem.

We'd never get away with a portable air conditioner in my school! We can't have small refrigerators (they were confiscated a few years ago!) so I'm sure they would say we can't have those either!

The "we didn't have AC back in the day" argument doesn't fly with me. We didn't have cures for certain ailments either; that doesn't mean we should abolish modern medicine.

It's extremely hot. My students are sweltering when they're simply sitting, and I'm roasting up at the board.

10000% agree. No a.c. in my kids school. I dress them in light clothing I wore a uniform for 12 years and hated every miserable.second. I don't think kids should.have to suffer.

Re: How Hot is Your Child's Classroom?

I am a teacher and yes it is hot (especially on the 3rd floor where I teach 4 periods). My office is not air conditioned either (but the main office and guidance offices are). However, its really only a few days a year. And lets be real - think about the amount of money it would be for a/c in every classroom (both purchasing and electricity). Most tax payers wouldn't want that cost!
