How do you handle electronics during the school week?
I admit I have done myself a huge disservice by allowing them A LOT of electronic time during the summer. We usually do no electronics during the week during school. I want to incorporate their usage on the weekends with them earning time through behavior/chore charts. Anyone do this with their kids? Should they earn time per chore completed, or time according to day completion of chores? Any examples? They are 9,7 and 6.

Mine are only 4 and 6 - but last year with Kindergarten I had a 'no video games on school nights' rule. ONCE in a while I'd break my own rule if he did exceptionally well with his homework or something, but that was a reward type of thing.
I let them watch TV, because after coming home from aftercare it's a way to decompress ......but not for hours. They usually watch a show or play outside while I prep dinner, homework is done, dinner, baths, a little TV, reading and bed.
I already warned my 1st grader that once school starts, the minute we walk in the door he has to read for 20 minutes before the TV is turned on. Doing it at night before bed he's too tired to concentrate, so I have to change things up. While the older one is reading, I'm going to have the litte one practicing his letters, numbers etc too. It also will force ME to sit down and do it with them, and not be running around like a distracted lunatic.
Thankfully my older son's Hockey schedule is Sat/Sun ......so no practice or games for him during the week this season.
The little guy will have one weekday game a week, so that's manageable

How do you handle electronics during the school week?
mikayla and kevin get home at 2:30 - they watch ONE show and then start their homework. by the time I get home from work, we do the reading together, dinner, bath, bed. they have to get up at 6am and are in bed by 8:30

There are no video games during the school week. They both have iPods that they are allowed to use during the week at the sitter's house after school. When we get home after they do their homework and reading, they can watch TV.

No video games or iPads from Sunday evening until Friday after school. They play Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon (hour at most)

I also can NOT take my teen dd's phone away from it being attached to her hand so that is not an option lolololol

An hour total or each day? Sorry if that's a silly question. DH wanted them to have an hour a week during the summer. I thought that was ridiculous (although they probably averaged 1 1/2 hr a day, which was ridiculous).

DD is too young to really play video games but she enjoys looking at youtube videos and playing an occasional Disney game on the ipad.
I don't plan to change or limit anything now that she is in school.
As long as she does her homework and it gets done I don't care how she spends her downtime.
But I am not a fan of rules in general- for myself or others.

How do you handle electronics during the school week?
I do not limit Ipad time at all. She knows she needs to do her homework right after school and at night before bed we read. Other than that it is her choice. She plays alot of educational games and is obsessed with Brain Pop which is educational. I actually learn stuff from it lol. Of course she sneaks in a few you tube videos (parent approved) or minecraft, but I'm ok with it.

For several years it was NO screens Monday - Thursday.
But that was when we were home after 5:30 and bed was 8:30 or so. It was dinner, finish hw, read, showers so no time.
NOW They are getting older and more difficult to control lol
Plus this year will be home at 4:30. DD in 7th grade is on her computer for homework so I know she will be on iMessage. She also now uses a smart phone.
DD2 is in 5th so not sure yet what her hw load will be like. I think 30 min may be ok.

Ditto for the most part. As long as it doesn't become a problem where it is the only thing they do on their downtime, I don't get crazy abut watching the clock on how much time they spend on ipads or video games, especially because so much of it is fun learning games/videos. For example, DS is obsessed with baseball and the Yankees. He has learned SO much on youtube about the team, the players and how to improve his game.

I know a mom (former teacher) who made ridiculous chore charts and levels of rewards and made her kids earn screen time. I just don't have time or patience for that. Also it got too complicated and never worked! I couldn't be that controlling.
Weekends vary based on weather, activities, hw etc.
Sat mornings they go on for a bit then they do some cleaning and I am not strict after that. I just try to keep them busy.

Please. I am lucky if me and DD leave the house in clean underwear every day.
I would never have time for something that involved!

They are allowed an hour on Friday and Sunday. Saturday depends on what we are doing, they def have more time to play on Saturdays.
There have been times of whining or misbehaving after iPad time is up. My DH will take the iPads away for days when that happens

What if those behaviors were displayed BEFORE even using electronics but after everything else was completed? They would lose electronics for a day, 2 days, the whole weekend? See where I'm going with this? lol. I can't possibly be the only parent with kids acting like a holes towards their siblings and parents.

Age appropriate punishment. So when DD is 7 it might be just that night, at 9 a day or 2, at 11 or 12 would be longer.

depends on the offense and the severity of it. I will and have taken them away for certain behavioral offenses, but as a general rule, as long as they have taken care of their responsibilities, they are free to use them. For behavioral offenses, usually the night, but for BIG offenses, I have taken it away for the week and they need to earn it back by displaying good behavior and not repeating said offense during that week.
As for sibling fighting....I dont take it awya for that, in fact I tend not to intervene and let them work it out themselves OR I make them go stand out on the front lawn and hug one another. I cannot tell you how well that works as a deterrent bc the last thing they want to do is hug one another, especially where one of their friends might see them, LOL!

DS has always been in love with all electronics as most kids are these days but the rule has always been and always will be, homework has to be finished before any type of electronics is allowed.

There are no video games during the week for the school year. They can play with them on Friday and the weekend if their homework is done. Computer time is monitored for homework purposes. If they have completed homework, and after school activities they can watch a tv show. In the morning if they have done their chores, had breakfast, and gotten dressed then they can have computer time. They don't have cell phones or iPads that are individually theirs alone. They have access to them, but they are in my bedroom. Once they are old enough to have their own phones, at bedtime they will have to leave them in my room turned off at night.

DS is 8 (3rd grade) and I'm starting a "No iPad, XBox" on school nights until HW, reading and chores are all done (and done to my satisfaction).
We'll see how it goes. . .
