Anyone renew their oil contract recently?
$2.89 with Lewissy. If its lower I get the lower rate. IMHO I always work with a family owned company. I have hear enough horror stories about Slomins that the cheep oil is NOT worth the headaches of no/low/bad customer service in an emergency.
It does NOT mean all service is bad from a non family owned company. It does not mean Slomins is bad.

I've been too cheap to try a family owned company but I can definitely see what you're saying. We switch every year between Meenan and Slomins. In February Meenan let us run out of oil while we were on vacation (and my thermostat was turned way down since we were away). Then I called in an emergency call and they NEVER came. We had to wait until the next morning for an oil delivery, I was so angry. I haven't had a problem with Slomins before so I'm back with them this year but I can see how good service can get lost in a big company.

I used to feel that way too. Until we got a pellet stove. And our oil use dropped DRAMATICALLY (Think, one delivery a winter). So suddenly the guy at the nice, family owned oil company became a real a-hole and quoted us a rate that was DOUBLE the market price. When I pressed he said, well you don't buy enough oil.
Oh really? I never knew there was a minimum to buy, that's not in my contract.
When I went with the bigger company (we use Petro now I think) they never had an issue with how much or how little oil I used because they were a big company with tons of customers.
So it can go both ways

we just renewed with Petro and I believe we got around $2.55
Slomins came knocking on our door over the weekend and asked if we had an oil contract. When we said we just resigned he asked our rate and said "oh that's high, we are offering $1.99"
Not sure how true that is bc as really had just resigned so we did not ask for more info

Just because they never dropped you doesn't mean it's not in the contract. You probably didn't read the fine print on your Petro contract. They have the right to terminate your agreement if they so choose since you aren't buying at least 600 gallons of oil from them a year. 200 gallons is nothing.

IMO you are taking a very big risk not doing COD and getting your own independent service contract. If you were up front saying you only have 200 gallons of usage they would never give you the typical lock in rate. Since they are giving you a free (or even paid) service contract, they are losing money.
I'd be concerned they would cancel my account during the coldest days of the year. Not something I would be willing to risk.

We don't' lock in a rate with them. We do market value and just automatic delivery as we buy so little.
They are aware of our usage over the years. I tell them up front I use alternative fuel for heat and just need the oil for the hot water.
We worked together to figure out that the market price plan works best for us- no lock in.
It's been 7 years now and so far, no issues.
I think we're good
