Playground surfaces

Are there any options other than sand, wood chips or recycled tires?

I found jelly bean mulch, which isn't made out of tires, but it looks a bit sharp.

Playground surfaces

We didn't do anything under our swings. We just left the grass and found that to be our best solution.

Same.

I was also shocked at how expensive a lot of that stuff is.

DS also rarely even uses his playset anymore....once in awhile or if we have a bunch of kids over.

We used pea gravel and its inexpensive and works well. It keeps the water drained, and we've only had to add a little more gravel about 6 years later. Only downsides are that its not easy to walk on barefoot (though my kids do) and some rambunctious little ones throw the rocks.
