Riverhead Aquarium vs. Brooklyn Aquarium

I've never been to the Riverhead Aquarium. I was surprised as to how expensive it is. I've been to the NY Aquarium in Brooklyn several times on field trips with my job. I know it pretty well lol. Is the LI Aquarium worth it? Is there more to see or do? My DS is 13 months.

If you don't have the membership and you have to pay for it, the Brooklyn Aquarium is not worth it. I grew up right near the Brooklyn Aquarium and know it pretty well. It was always kind of small and expensive for what it was, but now more than half of it is STILL closed after Hurricane Sandy. There is one indoor exhibit with a large tank and 3 or 4 smaller tanks. Other than that, the few other exhibits are outside: a sea lion show, penguins (that are never outside in the summer so you can't see them), one shark in a dirty tank that's hard to see, sea otters (the best part of the aquarium), and a walrus. There is a small touch tank but you're not allowed to touch with more than one finger now - when I was a kid you were allowed to hold the star fish and crabs. The biggest selling point of the Brooklyn Aquarium is its location - you can walk along the boardwalk, go on the rides at the amusement parks, have Nathans or Totonno's for lunch/dinner... but to pay like $40 for 2 adult admissions and parking to spend 40 minutes at the aquarium... it's not worth it.

As for Riverhead, I've only been there once but I liked it more. I think DD was about 1.5 years old and she had fun. That was over 2 years ago though and I don't remember it well, sorry.

Atlantis in Riverhead is gorgeous and worth every penny!! We have take DD at least 4-5 times and she isn't even 2 yet lol! Its contained, managable, and kid friendly. The tanks are beautiful and everything is clean and well maintained. The only thin I would recommend is packing your own food. The cafe food is pretty awful!

The great things about Riverhead, IMO are the touch tanks, butterflies, birds.

The overall aquarium is on the small side.

I think a 13 mo old, who would not be able to do those extras, would not benefit that much more than Brooklyn... but under 2 is free at Riverhead.

Brooklyn aquarium is free for us... As we are zoo members.

Thanks. I never had to pay for the Brooklyn Aquarium but you are right it is small and still under construction. I'm always hesitant to do things that I think my 13 month is too young for. I rather not waste my money you know? My husband is off next week though so I'm trying to think of some things to do.

The one perk of Brooklyn over Riverhead is there are more things to do besides the aquarium. Yes it is small but you can also go to the beach, walk the boardwalk, do games and rides. You can make a whole day out of it. After the Riverhead one all you can do is shop

I personally think Riverhead is way overpriced. Its nice, but small and a lot of money.

We actually did the Brooklyn NY aquarium 2 weeks ago. I haven't been before.

It is smallish with it under construction. However, we had a good time. We have the zoo passes, so we didn't have to pay at all and brought another couple with us, so there was only 1 admission paid for. The bonus, which we didn't' plan on, is the location, right on the boardwalk. Instead of just heading home, we left the car and walked down the boardwalk, had lunch at Nathan's, did Coney Island rides, went to a freak show. It was actually really awesome, though don't do the freak show with younger kids, that was a mistake.
