no pain meds. my friend and i were discussing this today.
im not trying to be the hero here  just curious to others' experiences.
I had an unmedicated birth. I used Hypnobabies techniques which worked for me. I had to practice daily to get the techniques down pat.

When you guys say it was a better recovery, what do you mean? What happened after the epidural in other births?
With DD I did have the epidural and was never bed-ridden afterwards, but I do remember some crazy bleeding in the day(s) that followed while I was still in the hospital. But I was up and walking by the time we went home on day 3, though obviously very sore down there. Do others have a worse experience after the epidural or is the healing that much faster after a natural birth?
I just know that I REALLY don't want to be induced this time so I hope I can avoid it, but I haven't given much thought as to epidural. Part of me wants to go without and another part of me screams "Are you crazy?!" lol

Me too. Because I had an epi and my recovery was perfect. I was fine in a few days and 100% back to pain free, discomfort free, normal in 1 week.
Recovery meaning the period right after birth. When I had the epi I was shaking uncontrollably, throwing up, dizzy - the nurses told me it was normal for the epidural. It was horrible. Without, I felt fine. Felt great actually, considering. Not shaky, my head wasn't cloudy.
I think everybody is going to react differently. For me personally, clearly my body did not like those meds, and I literally had the drip on for less than 5 minutes, it was a complete waste!
The actual recovery from the trauma of birth should have little to do with the epi.

Oh gotcha. That sucks! Definitely did not experience that thank god.

Also another side effect of having an epi, it's fever during labor. This happened to a friend and because of it her baby was put in the nicu to make sure he was ok. He stayed there for a week.
There are other things it'd be good to have into consideration and this is what an epi can mean to ur body. An epi is not a natural endorphin produced by the body, and when in the body, it can block the nerve receptors that send signals to the brain to start producing oxytocin (which is the hormone produced by the body to make contractions happen) making labor slow down or stop, which then would require synthetic drugs (like pitocin) that would then force the body to continue labor. I've talked to a lot of moms that have experienced both medicated and unmediated births, and a lot of them have said that although unmedicated births are no walk on the park, nothing compares to the pain that drugs like pitocin can produce. Not to mention that everything that enters ur body, it's also received by the baby, which is a whole set of problems!
It's great that u're educating urself about the cons and the pros (I wish I did this with my first pregnancy). Don't only trust ur doctor but also do ur own research with reputable articles, studies, etc. Also there are great birth groups that can direct u to trustable info that can be very useful when making a decision.

Oh ok yeah, I didn't have any of that. I can't imagine that is normal. I mean yes, some people will react to the drugs that way, like you said, but for her to say it's normal is a stretch I think.
I felt great with that bad boy in. I wanted to make love to the anesthesiologist who came in and gave it to me.

I also was shaking uncontrollably after I gave birth idk if it had to do with the epi or not. It took me a long time to heal with my birth with an epi. I felt nada during birth. Never felt an urge to push so was just pushing bc they told me to. So I was probably not doing it right and then after 2 hours of pushing they used the vacuum.

Yeah I don't actually believe it was a normal reaction, I only know 1 other person that had the same reaction. My nurse was terrible. I think what she meant is it can happen but it's rare. She really, really sucked - as did my doctor, ha!

I had an EPI with my first two. With my first I had it in longer and didn't feel while pushing, but somehow I did it correctly and he was out in less than 10 min. But I was swollen and just felt drugged, like I was hazy etc. with my 2nd I didn't have it in very long and my recovery was better, I didn't need any medicine for recovery, but again I was very swollen, and it still took me a week or so to feel normal. With my 3rd, I was induced, so pitocin is a ***** let me tell you lol, I was too late for the EPI lol, but I literally felt like a champ right after. If the baby could go home after 24 hrs I would have left, that's how good I felt. Also less bleeding and no swelling. With #4, my plan is to do fully natural, with no pitocin or EPI. But I laugh because if that doesn't work out, I will change my mind as I see fit. I didn't go into labor with #3 thinking no EPI, but it worked out well, so while I'm hoping to do that again, who knows how I'll feel that day.

2 emergency c sections and I was up and walking the next day.
But I never had a vaginal delivery, so I can't compare. My sister had 3, and aside from maybe being in recovery for a bit longer, I don't really see a difference.

I was shaking uncontrollably from the epi and they said that's normal.
A friend had no feeling in her leg for many months after getting the epi and needed physical therapy.

I did and would absolutely do it again. I think I have a higher tolerance for discomfort and always thought labor couldn't be THAT unbearable... That combined with the chance for better outcomes for mom and baby on an intervention free labor and delivery made my decision easy. I did get to a point where my contractions were seemingly one after the other and I felt like I was approaching a breaking point and couldn't keep doing this for hours longer. Turned out that was transition and I was 10 cm and ready to push. So for me, the worst part that seemed almost unbearable was a small portion of my labor and at the end! Pushing wasn't uncomfortable for me, because you work with the contractions. I remember the ring of fire but also didn't think it was that bad. I think a lack of fear in the process helps ease your mind of pain, too. Prepare yourself both physically AND mentally and I think you will have an easier time of it. Good luck!

They'll insist on the needle in your hand for the IV hookup (forget what it's called) but you can refuse them giving you any fluids. They just want that hook up to be in your hand already just in case of an emergency. I was ok with that.
