Baby Bottle Sterilizer

Is a bottle sterilizer worth it? Did you sterilize bottles more than the first time you used them? If not, you just boiled them in hot water, or even just washed with hot water and soap and the bottle brush? Trying to figure out if it's worth the $60 and the space it will take up in my kitchen. I have one but its taking up space in one of my kitchen cabinets. I usually handwashed bottles and used the dishwasher to sterilize.

Re: Baby Bottle Sterilizer

I never used one with my first. But I hand washed her bottles for the first months or so. With this baby all bottles/parts go in the dishwasher and i use a bottle sterilizer afterwards. I don't fully trust my dishwasher so it gives me some peace of mind. I'm sure it's not necessary.

New bottles or anything feeding related we take out of the package and put through the dishwasher. After that most of the time bottles are handwashed. Every now and then they go through the dishwasher.

Used it like 3 times maybe. And it wasn't $60. It's a playtex one that goes in the microwave.

Meaning it's cheaper or more expensive?

You used to be a post-natal nurse right? You think a mix of dishwasher and boiling hot water/soap is sufficient? TIA!! Chat Icon

Waste of money. I returned ours. You only need to sterilize things when you first buy them. You can just boil a pot of water.

Cheaper! Mine was like $35 or something! It was a gift but personally I wouldn't buy it myself now knowing how little it was used.

I'm getting one. We only end up running the dishwasher about twice a week since it's just the 2 of us. It's not worth it to me to run the dishwasher everyday just for bottles and I'm not buying enough bottles to last 3-4 days.

We also almost never put them in the dishwasher. Bottle brush and dawn cleans them up really well.

You don't need to sterilize after each use.

With my first, I would handwash the bottles, boil them in hot water and then put the small parts in the microwave sterilzation bags. Totally overkill. This time, I'll probably put them in the dishwasher and then use the microwave bags. I don't think you need a $60 sterilizer.

This. Nothing is sterile once it hits the air anyway.
Soap and hot water.
Or run through the dishwasher

I think I boiled the nipples and pacifers for 5 min before the first use- that was it

Yeah if anything I was thinking this. Because we don't run the dishwasher really, but I guess I could do the microwave bags to clean them a little extra after handwashing.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts!

Re: Baby Bottle Sterilizer

We did not find it worth it.
I boiled all parts of my breast pump and her bottles and nipples out of the box. After that, I put everything through the dishwasher. Most dishwashers have a sterile cycle so we put her pacifiers, teethers, and bottle parts in a dishwasher bin and put it on top rack.

Re: Baby Bottle Sterilizer

With my first, I boiled in water for the first 6 months or so, then turned to the dishwasher.

For DS2, I'm pretty sure I'll go straight to the dishwasher from day 1.

We usually just put them in the dishwasher. If we were not running it and had a ton of bottles, we would just throw them in a pot of water on the stove after rinsing them thoroughly.

I don't think a sanitizer is needed. We will do the same with DS2 when he arrives. Except now that we already have a toddler, I am sure we will just use the dishwasher since we run it almost every day now anyway!

Not worth it. I just put bottles/parts in boiling water first time out of the package. After each use, I wash them by hand with very hot water and use Dapple dish soap -- its all natural and gets rid of milk/formula residue.

Waste. I just boiled a pot of water and put the bottle parts in there for 10 minutes.
